The United States went through dramatic economic change during and after the Civil War, as industrialization spread rapidly and changed society. This transformation and some of the apparent abuses that developed led to an increased role of the government in regulating businesses and society. This role was heightened as government was viewed as the arbiter between business and organized labor. One can explore these developments from 1865 on through to World War II. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:
From the Progressive era through the New Deal period, political interventions generally tended to favor big corporations and hurt the common workers, leading to economic instability. (or you can argue that they helped the workers and promoted economic stability)
From 1865 to 1940, the development of labor unions was generally a negative force leading to economic disruption and unnecessary laws that stifled businesses and hindered job growth. (or you can take the position that labor unions had a necessary function and generally positive impact)
After giving general consideration to your readings so far and any general research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.) Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:
The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
To support your position, use four specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1940.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?
Length:
The paper should be 600-to-850 words in length. This normally means 3-to-4 pages for the body of the paper. (The title page and Sources page do not count in these calculations.) Double-space between lines. Format instructions are below.
Research and References:
You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not open-ended Googling. You will have a list of Sources at the end, using SWS format. You will have short, SWS-style in-text citations to those sources appropriately placed in the body of the paper. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course, for “starter research” you can read many sources.)

The previous assignments focused on domestic matters in US history. This last assignment explores America’s international role in recent decades. By the mid-20th century, the United States had become the dominant force in international relations. Some have argued that the United States’ military functions as the world’s “police.” This assignment covers the manner in which this shift occurred and the consequences the United States faces as a result of its status as “policeman of the world.” One can identify early steps this direction well before World War II, but in this paper focus on the period from the 1940s to the present. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:
The American “policing” role developed because of the Cold War, but it became primarily a means for protecting and assisting economic interests for itself and its allies as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.
The American “policing” role has been exercised primarily to protect vulnerable peoples and regions from powerful oppressors or from regional chaos, as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.
The American “policing” role has had noble intentions and ultimate success during the Cold War, but in fighting terror it has gotten off track with some severe consequences.
A position you develop on this issue with the approval of your instructor.

. The formal deadline is on Monday morning at 9am Eastern Time; this is the next day after Week 6 ends. Watch announcements, emails, and postings for exact dates and any holiday notes that sometimes arise.
[NOTE ON ECREE:
The university is adopting a tool called
ecree
for helping and doing writing assignments in many classes. In our History 105 class, we will be using the
ecree
program only for EXTRA CREDIT as a tool for doing work on your rough draft of the paper.
We hope this approach encourages more rough drafting and revision work by students as well as makes students familiar with this useful new tool.
For Assignment 2, in the Week 6 unit, you will see the link “EXTRA CREDIT: ROUGH DRAFT….”—that is where you can get up to 5 points of extra credit. Instructions will be posted there in the early days of the summer course. If you try this option, you will be able to use the file developed in ecree as a rough draft; you will then download that draft and edit it further.
Then, once your paper is fully polished and finished as you see fit, you will then submit it at the next link in the Week 6 unit, which says “SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT 2: INDUSTRIALIZATION AND THE RISE ……”.

BACKGROUND FOR THE PAPER
: This is a 5-paragraph paper based on research in designated sources. It is a position paper in which you support a thesis statement by reason and historical examples. The United States went through dramatic economic change after the Civil War, as industrialization spread rapidly and changed society. This transformation and some of the apparent abuses that developed (monopolistic practices, work conditions, low wages, arbitrary and oppressive expectations) led to an increased role of the government in regulating businesses and society. Government might intervene on the side of business owners for a variety of reasons. Or it might intervene on the side of workers. Or it might intervene for more general reasons. This role was heightened as government was viewed as the arbiter between business and organized labor. One can explore these developments from 1865 on through to the end of the 1930s. Examine the two statements below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position. [Don’t use this background paragraph in your paper.]
Topic and Thesis Statement—choose one of the following as your Thesis Statement:
THESIS STATEMENT 1
. From the late 1800s to the end of the 1930s, increasing government interventions and regulations of business tended to help the overall economy and the common workers.
THESIS STATEMENT 2
. From the late 1800s to the end of the 1930s, increasing government interventions and regulations of business tended to hurt the overall economy and the common workers.

From 1865 to 1940, expansion west was devastating to Native American culture, but government policies promoted economic growth in these territories and generally equal opportunities to the settlers. (or you can take the position that government policies did not promote those benefits in those new areas)
(The title page and References page do not count in these calculations.) Double-space between lines. Format instructions are below.

Assignment 1 Dealing with Diversity in America from Reconstructi.docxdeanmtaylor1545
Assignment 1:
Dealing with Diversity in America from Reconstruction through the 1920s
Due Week 3 and worth 120 points
After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. In the South, former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but, despite the Reconstruction period, faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Statement—in which you can take a pro or con position:
Political policies and movements in the period from 1865 to the 1920s generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that they did not). Use specific examples of policies or movements from different decades to support your position.
The position you choose —or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
To support your position, use three (3) specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.

After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, AzaleeRutledge285
After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. Reconstruction was partly a period of military occupation of the south by the northern victors. Former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:
The Lost Cause narrative of the South effectively sabotaged and influenced racial policy in the US for most of the post-Civil War period. (or you can take the position that it did not)
Political policies in the decades after the Civil War generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that political policies did not)
Reform movements between 1865 and 1930, like the Progressives and the agrarian populists, generally led the way to increased democracy. (or you can take the position that these movements did not)
After giving general consideration to your readings so far and any general research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.). Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:
The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
To support your position, use three specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

PART ONE:
INTRODUCTION WITH THESIS
In terms of content, a format sample like this does not provide that except for some illustrative suggestions. Because of that, these paragraphs and this paper runs a little longer than yours will. This sample mainly shows the form and organization—and samples of citing. And I provide a few tips here. Keep in mind the paper mostly focuses on a long period—from 1865 to the 1920s; and you will eventually need specific examples from three different decades in that period. But, in this first paragraph, you will have an introduction to your paper and you will also include your thesis statement. The instruction sheet offers two thesis statements to choose from. You are expected to choose one of those. Perhaps you feel that overall the political policies of the era mainly tried to promote diversity despite the prejudices of a few. Or, perhaps you feel the political policies of the era tried mainly to restrict or hinder diversity. You can be wide-ranging, using examples related to race in the south and immigration policies for folks from Europe and/or Asia. Or you can be more narrow in your focus, with your paper getting mainly into areas of race—or maybe issues of gender—or focus entirely on immigration from certain regions. The class text discusses these things;
make use of chapters 16 through 21.
Keep in mind, the overall issue is some aspect of DIVERSITY and how it develops and is dealt with in this time period (1865 through the 1920s). So, this first paragraph introduces the topic generally and establishes your focus as to time period and subject, and it states your thesis—your position. That THESIS STATEMENT should be the last sentence in this introductory paragraph.
PART TWO—THREE EXAMPLES:
The second and third paragraphs will cover your three SPECIFIC examples supporting your thesis. You can be wide ranging or narrow in your focus. Negative examples of policies hindering diversity might range from Plessy vs. Ferguson to the Chinese Exclusion Act to poverty facing new immigrants in big cities to arrests of women demonstrating for the right to vote. Positive exampl.

Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
NOTE: The word “policing” here has nothing to do with traditional law enforcement agencies. It is more about trying to manage parts of the globe—usually by use of military force or the threat of it. The aim of this management may be to maintain stability, remove threats of “rogue” forces or terrorists or weapons, prevent the expansion of autocratic rule, protect a fledgling democracy, etc.
BACKGROUND--The American international “policing” role developed because of the Cold War, but now terrorists or any power having or trying to get weapons of mass destruction (WMD) are the potential targets of such a role. Your paper will use specific examples—two from the Cold War years and two from the past two decades.
Choose one of these position statements (make it the last sentence of your introductory paragraph):
1. By examples from different decades since 1950, it is clear that the international policing role and strategy of the United States was once essential, but should now be discarded as ineffective and counterproductive.
2. By examples from different decades since 1950, it is clear that the international policing role and strategy of the United States during the Cold War has become even more necessary in this period of terrorism and instability.
In your paper, use specific examples—tw.

History 1302 Essay Assessment Assignment
General Information and Instructions:
The purpose of this assignment is to use different historical methods you have learned about during this course to complete a historical research project. Your research project should start with your developing a historical question, that you then research, and then attempt to answer using both primary and secondary sources to support your research.
How to proceed:
1. Select one of the essay topics below in the Essay Options section. There are a total of four possible research options, please read each one to decide which you feel you would like to pursue.
2. Create your specific historical question within the broader essay topic you select.
3. The examples under each essay option are by no means the only topics that you can write about, they are merely provided to help you think about how you might approach this topic. You should select your own topic, however you can choose one of the examples.
4. Begin researching primary and secondary sources to gather information that support your discussion of your historical question.
5. Review the paper requirements for both the research portion and the writing portion of your assignment.
6. Review the grading rubric to ensure that you have met all of the paper requirements before making your submission.
Essay Options (select one of the following options):
Research Option #1: History Turning Points
General Overview: Select an event, incident, a legislative action, or related marked historical moment in the years from Reconstruction until today that marks an important transition in American History. This historical event can lead to a social, economic, or political transition that shaped the country's history. Additionally, you will conclude this research project with a supposition of how history might have been shaped had this event never occurred or of another possible outcome could have been possible.
Examples: How did the new technology of WWI change modern warfare? What could have been the possible benefits and problems if the Freedman's Bureau continued beyond Reconstruction?
Research Objectives & Questions to be Discussed in Your Essay: (Incorporate these questions in the writing of your essay.)
· Why did you select this event?
· What were both the short- and long-term effects of this historical event?
· Who all were impacted/affected by this historical event?
· How was history changed by this event?
· If you were to imagine a different outcome or reaction to your event, what do you suppose might have been a different outcome in the short- and long-term?
Research Option #2: Oral History and Historical Memory
General Overview: You will read two historical personal accounts in relation to life in the past or tied to a specific historical event. Then your research will compare these personal accounts with the "factual" or "documented" history of the era. Next, proceed to compare the personal account against the ...
Sources and Tips for Assignment 1 (History 105; Prof. Stansbury)—.docxwilliame8
Sources and Tips for Assignment 1 (History 105; Prof. Stansbury)—3 pages here
LENGTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Each paper in our class is a 5-paragraph essay, plus there is a title page (=cover page) at the start and a Sources list at the end. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble. To determine length, I look at the BODY of the paper only (not title page or sources list) and consider primarily the word count. (Microsoft Word makes this easy. Just select from the first line of your first paragraph to the last line of your last paragraph. The word-count is provided on the lower left by MS-Word.). [I do not go by number of pages because there are too many ways that gets fudged by margins, font size, line spacing, etc. However, fyi---Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length—add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2.]
Your paper must have a numbered list of sources at the end combined with short in-text citations to those sources in the body of the paper. Any direct quote needs both quote marks and an in-text citation to the source. Any paraphrase or summary of information from a source requires an in-text citation to that source.
Use ONLY the sources designated. If for some reason you must use additional sources, do NOT google for them—use the university library. Pages 2 and 3 below show the sources for each topic and the SWS format for listing and citing each.
In this assignment, do NOT include long quotes of 4 lines or more. The paper is too short for that. Keep any quotes short and clearly marked with quote marks and a citation. Most of the paper should be you using mostly your words while using and summarizing information from your sources, as well as commenting and developing the paper according to the instructions. TIP: Before writing your paper, brainstorm first and make a general list or outline of each paragraph and what it will include. Use the class text for examples or specific information, and jot down the page numbers where you found that information. Do the same with other sources used. This will make your writing of the paper much easier. Then, start typing a rough draft. Plan to revise and edit yourself; allot time to polish the paper before you finally submit. Procrastination is the enemy of quality.
--------------------
ON THE NEXT TWO PAGES—How to list and how to cite the sources in your paper. Each of the three topics (as shown on the instruction sheet) identified sources by link and short identification. On the next two pages, you will see how each of those same sources look in an in-tex.

In recent times, public officials have come under fire due to unethical acts while in the public service. Governor Elliot Spitzer of New York, Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, to name a few. In your opinion, what kinds of wrongdoing do these activities constitute? What kind of message does this kind of behavior send to the public about the honor and moral compasses of the folks who are entrusted with the highest public offices in their respective states? What about those public officials who reverently speak publically about “God’s Laws”, but then violate them in private? Support your answers.

BACKGROUND FOR THE PAPER
: The United States went through dramatic economic change during and after the Civil War, as industrialization spread rapidly and changed society. Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Topic and Thesis Statement—choose one of the following as your Thesis Statement:
THESIS STATEMENT 1. From the late 1800s to the end of the 1930s, increasing government interventions and regulations of business tended to help the overall economy and the common workers.
THESIS STATEMENT 2. From the late 1800s to the end of the 1930s, increasing government interventions and regulations of business tended to hurt the overall economy and the common workers.
· Plan to make that thesis statement the last sentence in your introductory paragraph. The general subject is government economic interventions and regulations in that period of history. You may moderate the wording slightly to fit more precisely the position you wish to take. This is NOT a simple statement of a topic; it is a statement of a position you are taking about that topic. p.s.—Valid arguments and “A” papers can be made with either thesis. So, you choose the one you think is the stronger position.

Examine the statement below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Statement—in which you can take a pro or con position:
From the start of Progressive era of the late 1800s through the New Deal period in the 1930s, increasing government interventions and regulations of business tended to help the overall economy and the common workers. (Or you can argue that such interventions and regulations hurt the overall economy and the common workers.) Use specific examples from different decades—and be sure one of your examples is from the 1930s.
The position you choose or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
To support your position, use four (4) specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1940. However, one (1) of your four (4) examples must be from the 1930s.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

The position you choose —or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
To support your position, use three (3) specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.

[NOTE ON ECREE: The university is adopting a tool called ecree for helping and doing writing assignments in many classes. In our History 105 class, we will be using the ecree program only for EXTRA CREDIT as a tool for doing work on your rough draft of the paper. We hope this approach encourages more rough drafting and revision work by students as well as makes students familiar with this useful new tool. For Assignment 1, in the Week 3 unit, you will see the link “EXTRA CREDIT: ROUGH DRAFT….”—that is where you can get up to 5 points of extra credit. Instructions will be posted there in the early days of the summer course. If you try this option, you will be able to use the file developed in ecree as a rough draft; you will then download that draft and edit it further. Then, once your paper is fully polished and finished as you see fit, you will then submit it at the next link in the Week 3 unit, which says “ASSIGNMENT 1: DEALING WITH DIVERSITY….”. ]

The previous assignments focused on domestic matters in US histolourapoupheq
After giving general consideration to your readings and your research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.

Assignment 1:
Dealing with Diversity in the late 1800s and early 1900s
[note to student:
This FORMAT SAMPLE PAPER is not a sample student paper like you will submit.
Rather it illustrates the layout and makes a few suggestions about the content on each part.
It also illustrates a Sources list at the end; and it illustrates in-text citations in the body of the paper.
You MUST follow the instructions on the instruction sheet.
You must use the Schultz textbook as a key source.
And—other sources used must come from the list on the instruction sheet.
]
[You are encouraged to do the extra credit preliminary rough draft work in ecree (in Week 3 unit) to help on paragraph development and organization.
Your final paper must be submitted as an uploaded file in the Week 3 unit at the link “ASSIGNMENT 1:
DEALING WITH DIVERSITY….”
]
PART ONE:
INTRODUCTION WITH THESIS
In terms of content, a format sample like this does not provide that except for some illustrative suggestions. Because of that, these paragraphs and this paper runs a little longer than yours will. This sample mainly shows the form and organization—and samples of citing. And I provide a few tips here. Keep in mind the paper mostly focuses on a long period—from 1865 to the 1920s; and you will eventually need specific examples from three different decades in that period. But, in this first paragraph, you will have an introduction to your paper and you will also include your thesis statement. The instruction sheet offers two thesis statements to choose from. You are expected to choose one of those. Perhaps you feel that overall the political policies of the era mainly tried to promote diversity despite the prejudices of a few. Or, perhaps you feel the political policies of the era tried mainly to restrict or hinder diversity. You can be wide-ranging, using examples related to race in the south and immigration policies for folks from Europe and/or Asia. Or you can be more narrow in your focus, with your paper getting mainly into areas of race—or maybe issues of gender—or focus entirely on immigration from certain regions. The class text discusses these things;
make use of chapters 16 through 21.
This assignment explores America’s international role in recent deca.docxdunningblair
This assignment explores America’s international role in recent decades.
1. The American “policing” role developed because of the Cold War, but it became primarily a means for protecting and assisting economic interests for itself and its allies as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.
2. The American “policing” role has been exercised primarily to protect vulnerable peoples and regions from powerful oppressors or from regional chaos, as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.
3. The American “policing” role has had noble intentions and ultimate success during the Cold War, but in fighting terror it has gotten off track with some severe consequences.
4. A position you develop on this issue with the approval of your instructor.
After giving general consideration to your readings and your research, select one of the positions above as your position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.) Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:
1. The position you choose (from the list above)—or something close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening paragraph.
2. To support your position, use four specific examples from different decades between 1950 and the present. (At least one example must be from the last ten years).
3. Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
4. Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession? (This might be unclear at first since it is foreign policy. But, super-power status does inevitably provide advantages in a global economy.)
Length:
The paper should be 700-to-850 words in length. This normally means 2-to-3 pages for the body of the paper.
Research and References:
You must use a
MINIMUM of four
quality academic sources; the Schultz textbook must be one of them. Two of them must come from the online library—either those library sources listed or others. Your other source should be drawn from the list provided below. This is guided re ...

Assignment 3: America as a Superpower
Due Week 9 and worth 120 points
The previous assignments focused on domestic matters in U.S. history.

[NOTE ON ECREE:
As you know from our first two papers, the university is adopting a tool called
ecree
for helping and doing writing assignments in many classes. In our History 105 class, we will be using the
ecree

We hope this approach encourages more rough drafting and revision work by students as well as makes students familiar with this useful new tool.
For Assignment 3, in the Week 9 unit, you will see the link “EXTRA CREDIT: ROUGH DRAFT….”—that is where you can get up to 5 points of extra credit.
Instructions will be posted there in the early days of the summer course.
If you try this option, you will be able to use the file developed in ecree as a rough draft; you will then download that draft and edit it further.

This assignment engages you in different perspectives on a text and gives you the opportunity to employ a useful tool for note-taking and understanding.
1. Listen to/read three interviews about the Syrian refugee crisis and M.I.A:
Rolling Stone
interview:
"M.I.A.: The Permanent Revolution of Pop's Most Fascinating Radical"
(Links to an external site.)
This American Life
radio show episode
"Are We There Yet?"
(Links to an external site.)
Daily Show
segment
"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Welcomes Syrian Refugees to Canada"
(Links to an external site.)
For each interview, use the
double-entry or dialogic notebook
technique*. As the term implies, you are engaging in
a dialogue with a text; in a sense, you will be “talking back” to the work.
What I want you to do is take a piece of notebook paper and fold it in half length-wise, so you have two columns. Now, draw a line where the fold is, and you have two sides of the paper to make notes on, or have a conversation.
On the left side, you can take notes, including facts, interesting or important quotes (don't forget the page number if pertinent), unfamiliar terms, connections to other works, and so on.
Essentially, you make a note of anything that strikes you as important or interesting about the piece.
Once you've finished reading the work, go back and look at your notes. Use the right side of the paper to comment on them. What
do your notes mean? What do they reveal about the text’s meaning or significance? Why do you think this particular line caught your attention? How can you use this information in your own writing and in class discussions? This is where you should develop your critical questions.
Dialogic notebooks can be used in any number of ways:
You can write down a quote on the left (with the page number and title, so you don't forget!) and your thoughts/analysis of the quote on the right
You can compare and contrast two sources or stories; you can write sources that support your thesis on one side, and sources that act as counter-arguments on the other
You can ask questions one one side, and then explore the answers in your notes on the other side-- or words you need to look up and then their definitions.
Really, you can benefit from using a dialogic notebook in any class where reading is important. It can help increase your understanding and appreciation of texts, and can be
invaluable in helping you write papers, improve your vocabulary and prepare for tests.
It is a very useful way to organize notes. So...now you get to try it out!
2. As you listen to/read the interviews, use the dialogic notebook to take notes:
On the left side
, note the purpose and audience for each interview (keep in mind each interview likely has several purposes and audiences).
On the right side
, write down quotes from the interviews that support your claims about purpose and audience. Keep in mind an important part of the note-taking process is the ability to keep track of your sources.

ssessment. The purpose of the INCA survey is for you to examine your intercultural awareness and assess your cultural sensitivity. This activity is designed to help you become aware of your own attitude towards cultural diversity. The dimensions of cultural competence measured by the INCA survey are:1) Tolerance of ambiguity, 2) Behavioral flexibility, 3) Communicative awareness, 4) Knowledge discovery, 5) Respect for Otherness, and 6) Empathy.
Part 2:
Directions:
Use the 3 critical incidents selected below and analyze them.
Your analysis should contain at least
three scholarly references each that pertain directly to the incident,
and should be completed as formal written report in APA format.
You can take the format of an executive briefing or a training session.
The analysis should be complete and supported by literature, not an opinion piece.
My friend liked her class, but she felt that the teacher was very cold. She said the teacher just taught grammar and never asked about the students’ families or talked about her own.
A man commented one day that the reason there are so many single women in Canada is that they are lazy. His female friend was surprised and insulted by his attitude.
A young woman had recently arrived in Canada ready to start a new life. She found the weather a little cold but still enjoyed wearing the same style she wore at home—tight skirts and tight tops that had low neck- lines. After about a month, she began to notice people staring at her. She thought they were looking at her because she was a foreigner. Then one day someone told her that only prostitutes dressed that way. She felt angry and insulted.
Next choose from the following cultural orientations and themes as they relate to the critical incidents (can be more than one). Explain how your chosen critical incident relates to one or more cultural orientation(s) and theme(s) in your report:

This assignment consists of
two
parts.
Part I—Case Studies
Select
one
of the three case studies given below. Analyze the facts in the scenarios and develop appropriate arguments and recommendations using case law and scholarly sources. Do not copy the case studies into the paper. Cite your sources in APA format on a separate page. Add Part 2 and submit the two parts in a single document.
Scenario 1: Criminal Law
Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, with stores located throughout the state of Utopia, sells a wide variety of sporting goods, including guns. Section 323.45 of the Utopia Penal Code requires every seller of guns to verify that the purchaser has not committed a felony in any state within the past five years. If the purchaser has committed a felony within the past five years, the seller is not allowed to complete the sale. Selling a gun to a felon is considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a maximum $10,000 fine.
Wayne Carver, who was convicted of a felony under Utopia's penal code four years ago, purchased a gun at one of the Hank stores. Mel Loew, a salesman, sold Carver the gun without asking for identification or checking Carver's criminal background. Loew never checked whether any of the customers to whom he sold guns were felons. He was not aware of the law requiring him to check on every customer's prior criminal history. However, Warren Peace, Loew's supervisor, knew of the law and also knew that Loew never checked whether a customer was a felon. Hank, the sole shareholder and director of Hank's Hunting & Fishing Supply, knew about the law but did not know that Loew did not check on any customer's prior criminal history.
Carver used the gun in a bank robbery and shot a police officer and a bystander during his getaway. Carver has not been apprehended.
Can Loew be punished under Section 323.45 of the Utopia Penal Code?
What are the potential causes of action for Peace, Hank, or Hank's Hunting & Fishing Store?
What penalties should be assessed?
Does your state have a process that restores a felon's rights to own firearms? If so, provide the law and a short description of the process. Do you feel the process is legal and ethical?
Scenario 2: Employment Law
Sarah Franklin, an Apostolic Christian, worked as an overnight stocker at SaveMore. One night, during a break, Franklin participated in a conversation about God, homosexuality, and same-sex marriages. The next day, an employee told the manager that Franklin made inappropriate comments about gays to Casey, a gay employee. Over the next six weeks, SaveMore investigated the incident by interviewing and obtaining statements from employees who were present during the conversation. In his statement, Casey reported that Franklin pointed her finger and said that God does not accept gays, that gays should "not be allowed to marry," and that they will "go to hell." Four employees confirmed that Franklin said that gays "are going to hell."

This assignment asks you to apply geographical concepts to your life.docxronnag9bkla
This assignment asks you to apply geographical concepts to your life and to the world around you. The assignment requires both primary and secondary research. You will write three short “journal entries,” an introduction, and a conclusion (plus a bibliography).
You will select three units from the course outline to focus on (e.g. urban geography, cultural geography, etc.). For each unit you will choose a small site (e.g. a playground, shop, public square, school, café, living room, temple, theatre, park) in Metro Vancouver and apply the concepts and vocabulary from the unit (readings + lectures) to your observations at the location. To do this, you must visit the place and spend at least one hour closely observing (looking, listening, smelling, touching, making sketches, taking photos, and possibly speaking to people)
and taking notes
. You will use your observations to illustrate the concepts/vocabulary from the unit you selected. At the same time, you are using geographical concepts to help you understand what you observe. You will record your reflections and observations in a journal entry. Your journal entry will connect the location and your observations to the concepts in the unit. Do not take anything for granted! As you will discover, even apparently minor features (a table, a photograph, a tree, a plaque, a glass of milk, a lamp, mementos, a bee) are important. Look for relationships between space, place, identity, and power. How can geographic concepts help you understand such interactions? Although your analysis will take into account landscape and humans (as well as other living beings), you may choose to focus on landscape/objects or human behaviour (rather than both).
The three sites:
-one must be a room in the apartment/house in which you currently live
-one must be in the neighbourhood in which you live (e.g. Kits, Mount Pleasant, Guildford)
-one can be anywhere in Metro Vancouver
You will not be able to cover everything in the unit, but at least 2-3 key terms/concepts. You may use the same concepts that you used for the media assignment, but your analysis must be substantially different. Each journal entry must be 600-800 words. Indicate the date and time of your observation. Begin with a description of the place you observed, and then move into your analysis. Be sure to define the geographical concepts you use. If your paper contains maps, pictures or diagrams, label them clearly and refer to them in the text.
For each journal entry you must also do some outside research using at least one scholarly source. You will use the scholarly source to add depth to your analysis and to incorporate what other scholars have said about the topics you are discussing. In addition to scholarly sources, you may use popular sources (e.g. website, novel, newspaper, movie) if you wish. Any time you use an idea from somebody else you must cite the source. Not doing so is plagiarism. Any citation style is acceptable as long as you are .

This article by Bernard Lewis asks important questions about why Mid.docxronnag9bkla
This article by Bernard Lewis asks important questions about why Middle Eastern countries are often ambivalent about modernization. In the process, he reviews the key elements that create modernity, the theme of this course. Many of the elements of the modern world system he discusses will now be familiar. Others, such as the role of individualism, the separation of church and state, and women’s rights, we have not had time to discuss. By creating this overview and asking what is uniquely part of Western culture and what is beyond culture, Lewis provides a capstone to the last three modules. His erudite musings help us ask: What is modernity? How did it come about? And where is it going?
Read the information in the following article:
Lewis, B. (1997). The West and the Middle East.
Foreign Affairs.
January/February.
https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/middle-east/1997-01-01/west-and-middle-east
Answer the following questions:
What parts of the modern world does Lewis assign an origin in Western culture?
What does Lewis mean by civil society?
What part of the modern world developed in Islamic regions?
What aspect of global modernity does Lewis believe has emerged from its identification with one or more cultures?
SLP Assignment Expectations
In the Module 4 SLP, you are expected to:
Answer the questions clearly, using full sentences with correct grammar and spelling.
Write one or two paragraphs on each question.

This activity highlights the development of paper diagnostics—diagno.docxronnag9bkla
This activity highlights the development of paper diagnostics—diagnostic tools that are inexpensive to make and simple to use. These devices are based on the widely expanding field of micro or nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS).
Microfluidic devices move fluid through channels and include inkjet printer heads, needles, and Lab-on-a-chip technologies. These devices are created using millimeter and nanometer components and are an important component of many nanotechnology and biotechnology research facilities.
First:
Watch:
Laurie Garrett: Our failing global health system
(21 minutes)
George Whitesides: A lab the size of a postage stamp
(17 minutes)
Small Fixes: Paper Diagnostics
Next, familiarize yourself with the following terms and their definitions:
Paper Diagnostics:
is a versatile, disposable test that can diagnose a tiny amount of urine or blood for evidence of infectious diseases or chronic conditions, designed to be made of paper.
Microfluidics:
is a multidisciplinary field intersecting engineering, physics, micro/nanotechnology, and biotechnology, with practical applications to the design of systems in which small volumes of fluids will be used (milliliters and nanoliters). Microfluidics emerged in the beginning of the 1980s and is used in the development of inkjet print heads, DNA chips, lab-on-a-chip technology, micro-propulsion, and micro-thermal technologies.
Ethics/Social Responsibility:
Strive to promote social good and prevent or mitigate social harms through research, public education, and advocacy. This is an important principle of scientific and engineering research.
Lab on a chip:
A lab on a chip is a device that integrates one or several laboratory functions on a single chip of only millimeters to a few square centimeters in size.
Pandemic:
A pandemic is an epidemic of infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region—for instance, a continent or even worldwide.
Capillary action or wicking:
The movement of liquids through thin tubes or the flow of liquids through a porous media, such as the follow of water through soil.
Finally, post to the discussion board your answers to the following questions:
What are some of the problems (for example, societal, political, technological, and economic) with treating pandemics in the developing world? For the purposes of this activity, the developing world includes Africa, Central and South America, Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. How can nanotechnology be used to manage pandemics with these problems?

Thinking Critically About Visuals
“I Knew That Aliens Existed!”
Examine the faces and body Language of people in the photo. Do you think they believe that this “alien” corpse is real? Do you think it might be real? Do you believe that alien life has visited earth? Why or why not?
Let's examine the process of critical evaluation by thinking through a sample belief: “I believe that aliens have visited the earth in some form.” A Gallup Poll found that 42 percent of American college graduates believe that flying saucers have visited the earth in some form.
Reasons/Evidence
Authorities
Many reputable people have seen UFOs and had personal encounters with aliens. The government has documented these in secret files, which include the UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. Government attempts at concealment and cover-up have been transparent.
Thinking Critically About Authorities
Although many individuals have testified about alien encounters over the years, almost all scientific authorities have been extremely skeptical. They emphasize that all of the “evidence” is unsubstantiated, controversial, indirect, and murky—the markings of pseudoscientific fantasies. If aliens and UFOs exist, why haven't they announced their presence in an incontrovertible fashion? Some of the most intriguing evidence comes in the form of the government's belated and somewhat bizarre explanations for UFO sightings and the alleged Roswell incident. On June 25, 1997, the Air Force announced that the mysterious happenings in the New Mexico desert in the late 1940s and 1950s were in fact experiments involving crash dummies and weather balloons. Six weeks later, on August 3, 1997, the CIA “admitted” that the U.S. government had lied about alleged UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s to protect classified information regarding top-secret spy planes, the U-2 and SR-71. Why did the government suddenly attempt to explain these mysteries after all these years? And why does there appear to be contradictory testimony from different parts of the government? Why do the government explanations seem almost as fanciful and farfetched as the UFO stories?
References
There are many books supporting alien visitations and alien abductions.
Thinking Critically About References
Although many books regarding UFOs have been written, few have been more than unsubstantiated speculation. Philip J. Corso, who served on the National Security Council under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, contended in his book
The Day After Roswell
(Pocket Books, 1997) that he personally directed an army project that transferred to the military various types of technology recovered from the alien ship that crashed in the desert. To date, efforts to prove or disprove his account have been inconclusive. After reviewing written accounts and interviewing people claiming to be alien abductees, Dr. John Mack, a psychiatry professor at Harvard Medical School, came to the conclusion that many of these reports are true. Thinking about the five steps in the creative process, identify how .docxronnag9bkla
Thinking about the five steps in the creative process, identify how Jeff Bezos exemplified some or all of these steps in the creative process as elements of personal, political, and positional power to effect change in organizational culture.
Step 1: Opportunity or problem recognition – a person discovers that a new
opportunity exists or a problem needs to be resolved. The creative leader recognizes
a successful way to commercialize this development.
Step 2: Immersion – the individual concentrates on the problem and becomes
immersed in solving it, collecting information and considering alternatives and
solutions.
Step 3: Incubation – the person keeps the assembled information top of mind and is
engaged in solutions, even if on a subconscious level, while arranging the information
into meaningful new patterns.
Step 4: Insight – the person realizes a problem-conquering solution often in a random
moment or unexpected time. He or she experiences an “Aha” moment in which
information patterns fit into business solutions.
Step 5: Verification and application – the individual attempts to prove that the creative
solution has merit and business viability. The verification procedures include
gathering supporting evidence, using logical persuasion, and experimenting with new
ideas. The application process requires persistence and tenacity, as others tend to
first reject most novel ideas as impractical.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The United States went through dramatic economic change during a
1. The United States went through dramatic economic change
during and after the Civil War, as industrialization spread
rapidly and changed society. This transformation and some of
the apparent abuses that developed led to an increased role of
the government in regulating businesses and society. This role
was heightened as government was viewed as the arbiter
between business and organized labor. One can explore these
developments from 1865 on through to World War II. Take one
of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources
listed, and present a paper with specific examples and
arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.
Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con
position:
From the Progressive era through the New Deal period, political
interventions generally tended to favor big corporations and
hurt the common workers, leading to economic instability. (or
you can argue that they helped the workers and promoted
economic stability)
From 1865 to 1940, the development of labor unions was
generally a negative force leading to economic disruption and
unnecessary laws that stifled businesses and hindered job
growth. (or you can take the position that labor unions had a
necessary function and generally positive impact)
After giving general consideration to your readings so far and
any general research, select one of the positions above as your
position—your thesis. (Sometimes after doing more thorough
research, you might choose the reverse position. This happens
2. with critical thinking and inquiry. Your final paper might end
up taking a different position than you originally envisioned.)
Organize your paper as follows, handling these issues:
The position you choose (from the list above)—or something
close to it—will be the thesis statement in your opening
paragraph.
To support your position, use four specific examples from
different decades between 1865 and 1940.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have
shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired
profession?
Length:
The paper should be 600-to-850 words in length. This normally
means 3-to-4 pages for the body of the paper. (The title page
and Sources page do not count in these calculations.) Double-
space between lines. Format instructions are below.
Research and References:
You must use a MINIMUM of three sources; the Schultz
textbook must be one of them. Your other two sources should be
drawn from the list provided below. This is guided research, not
open-ended Googling. You will have a list of Sources at the
end, using SWS format. You will have short, SWS-style in-text
citations to those sources appropriately placed in the body of
3. the paper. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use
other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course,
for “starter research” you can read many sources.)
Source List for Assignment 2: Be sure to use the Schultz text as
a source. Use at least two of the other sources listed here.
Some sources are “primary” sources from the time period being
studied. Some sources below can be accessed via direct link or
through the primary sources links on Blackboard. Each week has
a different list of primary sources. For others, they are
accessible through the Library tab to the left of the screen in
Blackboard—once in there, you may do a “key word” search of
the article title.
