Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain. Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential. Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes. Membrane Potential and Action Potential: Resting membrane potential: -55mV. Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength. Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell: Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation. Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system. Hello everyone. So - this was a good one. Dan - about a job. One that doesn’t really exist. Perhaps it’s a thing. Or maybe it’s a culture. Anyway, you get the idea…
I’ll be getting my revenge. Did get me thinking – about what a resuscit is, what one does, what it should be. This is a concept that doesn’t seem to be going away - Like all made up words … sharp end of diagnostics, early adopter, adding value to a complex action team.
As clinicians we seem to be comign to some form of consensus – you are welcome This JD talks about sim/pocus/education/research/critical care. Is there a syllabus for this? Are we sure we know what it is?
Got me thinking about Al Pacino Anyone seen heat. Anyone do a Pacino impression? Scene where he carries his step daughter into the ER after finding her in the bath, ahving attempted suicide. She’s exsanguinated. Unconscious. Periarrest. He drops her off but then asks for 5 different specialties – expertise, leadership, skill. Why doesnlt he ask for a resuscitationist? If they made this film today, would he ask for one now?
What would you want. For your child, for your relative. For yourself. Are you the doctor you would want to see when someone carries you in like this? If not, why not? If it’s someone else, why is it that person. This is interesting – we’ll come back to Al Pacino, but this is probably the right point to stop and think about 5 things that we might want from a resuscitationist
