Matter can exist in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Solids have a definite shape and volume, liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container, and gases have no definite shape or volume and spread out to fill their container. Common examples of solids include ice and rocks; liquids include water and milk; and gases include air and clouds.
