The narrator describes how he became obsessed with an old man's eye and planned to kill him over the course of a week by slowly opening his bedroom door and shining a light on his eye each night. On the eighth night, the old man awoke and cried out, filling the narrator with anger and fear. He rushed in and smothered the old man, stopping his heart. However, the narrator began to hear the sound of the old man's heart still beating and became paranoid, convinced the police could hear it too when they came to search the house. He confessed to the killing.
