This document summarizes regeneration stories from Balfour Beatty's 2011-2012 activities. got in common? Easy. They all played their part in
Balfour Beatty’s 2011-2012 Regeneration Stories.

Don’t miss out when the Balfour Beatty Jobs Fair comes to
town. On many of our sites, we invite local people to come
along and talk about getting a job on the project. Which
means that some of the money that’s being spent on your
community stays in your community.
The happy ending:
Over 130 local residents attended our September 2011 Jobs
Fair at Darwen Vale School, Blackburn. Six firm job offers
were made on the day and a further five jobs were offered
after an interview.

7. GETTING READY FOR
WORK IN ROTHERHAM
Wayne Haywood is a police officer. We invited him to an event
we were organising for KS2 children to help them find out what
work is really like by talking to local adults about their jobs.
Wayne felt unsure about attending at first because he thought
the children would be too young to take it seriously. But, once
he got there, he found the children were keen to find out more
and really enjoyed the day.
The happy ending:
Supported by a number of businesses in 2012, we inspired 230
KS2 pupils in Rotherham to work hard at secondary school, aim
high in their career ambitions and get ready for the world of work.

9. THE WRONG SIDE
OF THE TRACKS
Getting on the wrong side of electricity is just stupid. That
stuff’s a killer you know. And as there’s lots of it at work in
train stations, it pays not to mess around when you’re there.
Which is why we held an awareness-raising day at Köln-Nippes
station in Cologne to show local students the shocking results
of playing on the railways.
The happy ending:
Sixty students aged 13–16 from three different schools took
part. And who knows, the event may even have helped to save
someone’s life.

11. ELIJAH’S STORy
Meet Elijah. Elijah lives in Oldham. Never a great lover of school
but ready to work he just needed a chance to prove himself.
Seeing an advert for ‘Get into Construction’, a programme from
The prince’s Trust that Balfour Beatty support, Elijah applied and
did a work placement with Willows Mechanical Services. They
were so impressed that they offered him a job. Now he studies
at Salford City College while learning his trade on the Newman
RC School project.
THE HAppy ENDING:
From October 2011 to March 2012, Balfour Beatty helped over
100 young people start this programme. Around 60% of them
have gone on to study, get a job or be offered an apprenticeship.

13. HAVE YOU GOT
THE E-FACTOR?
E is for entrepreneur. The E–Factor is our way of helping
students to understand how businesses are created and
operated. Fun, interactive and dare we say it essential, the
one-day programme shows how recruitment, marketing and
accounting all play their part in running a successful business.
The happy ending:
Delivered by Creative Learning Events for Balfour Beatty,
we helped 370 students at four UK schools learn new skills.
Now that is exciting!

15. THE A-Z OF
FUNDRAISING
If you go down to work today you’re in for a big surprise.
From balloon races and bake-offs to treasure hunts and trekking,
we’ve been busy raising money for Building Better Futures,
our charity that helps young people with all sorts of problems
to achieve their full potential. So don’t be alarmed if you see
one of us running a race dressed as a giant clock, just put some
pennies in our bucket.
THE HAppy ENDING:
During the course of 2012, we are on course to raise around
£500,000 for our charity partners. Brilliant.

17. HARNESSING THE ENERGY
OF YOUNG MINDS
How do you celebrate the 100th birthday of the UK’s largest,
centrally located deep-water port? With a cake and candles?
Or by helping local students to research and pitch ideas highlighting
the Port of Immingham as an attractive hub for new companies
working in renewable energies. As part of Balfour Beatty’s
outsourcing relationship with North East Lincolnshire Local Authority
we did both. Yum.
The happy ending:
Supported by business advisors, Year 10 students from Havelock
and John Whitgift Academies in Grimsby learned valuable business
skills. These skills will support them as they move into the world
of work while raising the profile of their area as a commercial and
historical landmark.

19. DO YOU REMEMBER
YOUR FIRST TIME?
Even the most experienced adult will admit that job interviews
can be anxious, nerve-jangling and, let’s be honest, more than a
little bit scary. So how are you supposed to get ready for your
first one? Some of us volunteered to help out by offering job
interview practice to Year 10 students. This way they could
practice speaking about themselves and their strengths before
they entered the emotional cauldron of a real job interview.
The happy ending:
During 2012, 18 Balfour Beatty staff from a variety of business
roles interviewed 160 pupils at the Co-Operative Academy of
Leeds. This work has led to a Careers Fair aimed at helping
parents and the local community find ways back into work.

21. COOKING TO
THE FUTURE
Type 2 diabetes is on the increase among the young and its
treatment takes up 10% of valuable NHS resources. When our
client Queen Elizabeth Hospitals Birmingham asked us to help
them raise awareness of this serious health issue we created
The Nourish Chef Challenge 2012. 17 schools in the UK and over
500 students competed to create a two-course menu for a
diabetic diet. And the prize? A mouth-watering opportunity
to gain priceless work experience with top chefs in the UK
and USA.
THE HAppy ENDING:
The students learned about diabetes while acquiring new skills
and knowledge of working within high-pressure restaurant
environments. Nourish was also launched into USA schools in
2012 and 50% of students reported an increase in confidence
when cooking for a diabetic diet.
