Feudal japan
- Feudal Japan began with the Yamato Period from 300-710 CE when Japanese rulers began adopting Chinese culture like Confucianism, Buddhism, language, and architecture.
- The Heian Period from 794-1156 CE saw the growth of large estates and refinement of court life, with the development of Japanese literature and arts influenced by but distinct from Chinese models.
- Feudalism developed in Japan with the emperor at the top and a system of loyalty and military service between shoguns, daimyo, and samurai down to peasants, as in medieval Europe. This period saw the rise of bushido, the samurai code of honor.

1) Medieval Japan was ruled by powerful military rulers called shoguns after a period of feudalism dominated the country.
2) Samurai warriors gained power and formed private armies to serve powerful nobles called daimyos. Eventually, one daimyo became the most powerful and took the title of shogun in 1192.
3) In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa Shogunate and divided Japan into 250 regions controlled by daimyos loyal to the shogun in order to bring order and end fighting between daimyos. The shoguns then isolated Japan from foreign influence by banning travel outside the country.
Medieval Japan
Feudalism developed in Japan as powerful clans and nobles (daimyo) gained independence and rivaled the emperor for control in the 9th-12th centuries. This led to many wars until a shogun unified the country in 1192, taking real power from the emperor. In the Edo Period starting in 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun and established a feudal system with the daimyo lords divided under his control through a system of rotating residence, hostages, and obligations. This strict system maintained peace for over 250 years under 15 generations of Tokugawa rule.

During this time, Kyoto was established as the imperial capital and the Fujiwara clan gained power by intermarrying with the imperial family and taking control of the emperor and court. Chinese ideas like Buddhism and literature were introduced and adapted to Japanese culture. The Tendai and Shingon schools of Buddhism spread widely. The imperial court focused on refinement of arts and ceremonies. Eventually, military clans like the Minamoto and Taira grew in strength and fought for dominance, leading to the establishment of a new government in Kamakura.

After World War 1, Japan expanded its empire by seizing territories from Germany and forcing concessions from China. As Japan grew more militaristic and discriminatory, it clashed with Western powers and was excluded from the League of Nations in 1933. Domestic problems like overpopulation and economic issues led Japan to abandon democracy and come under military rule. With a strong military and a sense of hopelessness, Japan embarked on a path towards war.

these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.

of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

Japan - The Shoguns

- 2. Definition Shogun: Military leader but became a symbol of military control over the country. Must not forget the possibility of war. Samurai: The art of sword mastery. Also a title given to people who practice the art and is capable of using it. Shogunate: Millitary government (bakufu) or tent government.
- 3. The History The rule of Fujiwaras ended in 1185. Debate between the Taira (Heike) and the Minamoto (Genji). Minamoto – gained support from warriors. 1185 – Minamoto defeated the Taira. KYOTO MinamotoYoritomo Taira
- 4. The Kamakura Shogunate Pledged loyalty to the emperor. Shogun or commander in chief – real ruler of Japan. Set up a shogunate Took control of government tasks Ran country estates Replaced the nobles as supporters of the arts.
- 5. The Tokugawa Shogunate 1199 – Yoritomo died, his shogunate weakened. 1600 – Tokugawa Ieyasu took over. The village of Edo (Tokyo) was the centre of Tokugawa rule. Divided people by classes; warriors, artisans (make and prepare utensils), merchants (traders) and peasants (workers).
- 6. The Warriors Political power was held by warriors. Under the emperor and shogun were lords called daimyo. The daimyo secured the services of the warrior-retainers. The warriors were called samurai.
- 7. The Modern Period US forced Japan to end its period of isolation, the shogunate weakened. 1903 – Keiki / Yoshinobu died.
