The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence Turns Out Null.
Where are all the aliens? A new study indicates that
humans might be the sole form of intelligent life in the
nearby universe.
The new study, dubbed Glimpsing Heat from Alien Technologies,
or G- HAT, is entering the search for extraterrestrial
intelligence. The study aims to seek out intelligent
civilizations by searching for alien waste-heat.
The scientists begin their search while operating under the
definition of intelligent life as life which uses energy and
engineering in order to overcome its limited resources. The
researchers use data from the 2009 Wide-Field Infrared Explorer
(WISE), which provides thermal images of the Milky Way galaxy
along with a million other galaxies. This data enables the G-HAT
team to peak into foreign environments and perhaps observe the
life by which these environments are populated.
Any particular galaxy may contain a varied number of
stars, planets, and civilizations. In our own planetary
system, which is part of the Milky Way galaxy, Earth
maintains an elliptical orbit about its host star, the
Sun. Light from the Sun falls on planet Earth and humans
engineer methods which enable them to harvest that energy
for their own purposes. It is highly probable that any
sufficiently advanced civilization does the same.
The first law of thermodynamics is a statement of
energy conservation. This law indicates that the energy
that comes in is equal to the energy which goes out. In
the case of a planet intercepting energy as a portion of
its host star’s light, that energy must be reradiated by
the planet, primarily as heat.
The thermal imagery provided by WISE depicts the
energy radiated by a star or planet. The relative
brightness between a planet and its host star can therefore
indicate the efficiency with which the planet’s inhabitants
might be using their star’s energy. A highly efficient
system could be indicative of advanced engineering and
intelligent life. The G-HAT team is analyzing this data by
classifying civilizations based on the power of their intercepted
starlight, non-starlight energy, reradiated heat, and non-thermal
waste disposal.
The preliminary search for intelligent life in the neighboring
sectors of our universe has turned up null. Results show that waste
heat profiles characteristic of galaxy spanning civilizations are
highly unlikely.
Further studies using the waste heat approach might include the search
for less advanced civilizations or the expansion of the search to include a
larger fraction of the universe. Additionally, Communication and Artifact
SETI will remain pursuant in their search for radio communication from
extraterrestrial intelligence and environmental evidence of an
extraterrestrial civilization’s existence, respectively.
The scientists will continue to push forward the frontiers of
our knowledge, but for now, however, our questions remain
unanswered. Life everywhere must continue to wonder, "Is anybody out
there?".
