The science of psychology has steadily been moving more toward a biological basis during the early 20th century but researchers found that it really didn't explain all the nuances of human behavior. One of the more famous experiments is the Pavlov dog experiment, which described unconditioned and conditioned responses. James Watson went one step further describing behavior from what then emerged as Behaviorism. It was B.F. Skinner that shaped Behaviorism into its current state, through research on operant conditioning. Behaviorism still didn't provide all the answers; psychology continues to evolve into different areas such as cognitive psychology. Explain why Pavlov's experiments in reflexology were an important part in the development of psychology. Describe behaviorism from Watson’s perspective; then, compare and contrast his viewpoints with operational positivism and the prevailing functionalism. What are the major similarities and differences between Watson and Skinner's behaviorism? From your understanding of psychological principles, which of them had a greater influence in the areas of both research and applied psychology? He developed behaviorism in part to promote research and elevate the status of learning in psychology. Learning in animals is probably the most important topic in the whole study of behavior (Watson, 1914, p. 45).
No experimenter has yet set his experimental problems in such a way as to construct from his data a guiding theory of habit formation (Watson, 1925, p. 25).
In 1930, when he revised Behaviorism for the last time, Watson expressed satisfaction that behaviorism was strongly entrenched as a point of view in American psychology. He took the occasion to repeat a major theme of his career, the contrast between the old psychology of James's and Titchener's introspection and what he called the new psychology of behaviorism. From his point of view, Watson had achieved great success in his primary goal of changing the subject matter of psychology from consciousness to behavior. After telling his readers that consciousness was the subject matter of the old psychology, Watson repeated the main point of his manifesto on behaviorism (Watson, 1913a), that "behaviorism, on the contrary, holds that the subject matter of human psychology is the behavior of the human being" (1930, p. 2).

Clark examines the definition of classical conditioning through the lens of several researchers and traces its origin back to the late 1800s and the turn of the nineteenth century. The article offers insight into the development of classical conditioning in both the United States and Russia. While keeping with history, he credited Pavlov as the founder of classical conditioning. However, he describes the various positions of other researchers that weighed in and attempted to alter or clarify the stimuli-response process. Notably, Edwin Twitmyer, a U.S. doctoral student, made a “reflex” discovery before the Russian-born physiologist, Pavlov. Interestingly, Twitmyer never pursued his experimental findings beyond his initial observation while Pavlov’s findings are richly sketched in the fabric of psychology because of his commitment in the field of physiology. The author delivered a clear picture of the roles of Twitmyer and Pavlov in addition to other researchers: Watson’s classical conditioning, Hull instrumental conditional, and Skinner’s operant conditioning were all brought together and synthesized by Hilgard and Marquis, both are credited with coining the term ‘classical conditioning.' The author who holds a Ph.D. in psychiatry sufficiently assessed how the term ‘classical conditioning’ came into being and the relevance of other researchers.

The president has the freedom to interpret narrowly or broadly what is declared a major disaster on a case by case basis. (Sylves 2014, p. 99). Haddow (2013) noted that “Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (The Stafford Act) occurs about 44 times each year on average (in addition to major emergency and fire management assistance declarations which provide more limited assistance).” (p. 201). “There is over 30 federal department that works within the NRF structure with the ability to assist local and state officials.” (Haddow 2013, p. 191). While it can be asked if stats over-use the emergency program, the facts are the president has to approve these actions. States may take full advantage of the resources available to help limit the direct cost and impact to state budget and local economy. The article offers insight into the development of classical conditioning in both the United States and Russia. While keeping with history, he credited Pavlov as the founder of classical conditioning. However, he describes the various positions of other researchers that weighed in and attempted to alter or clarify the stimuli-response process. Notably, Edwin Twitmyer, a U.S. doctoral student, made a “reflex” discovery before the Russian-born physiologist, Pavlov. Interestingly, Twitmyer never pursued his experimental findings beyond his initial observation while Pavlov’s findings are richly sketched in the fabric of psychology because of his commitment in the field of physiology. The role of the non-governmental organization is to support the government entities in response and relief in many ways during a disaster. The roles of the government entities are more clearly defined in the National Response Framework (NRF) and are guided by policies and laws (Haddow, Bullock, and Coppola, 2014). The partnership of governmental and non-governmental organizations allows for disaster relief efforts to be spread across different organizations and allows each organization to focus on their duties during an incident.
While governmental disaster relief is paid for using tax dollars and federal grants, non-governmental organizations must rely heavily on donations. These donations may come in the form of both monetary and goods. Many non-governmental organizations collect supplies such as toiletries, clothing, and food for disaster relief needs. These organizations can be small local non-government organizations or larger organizations such as the American Red Cross.
Unlike governmental disaster relief assistance, non-governmental organizations are often set up for immediate needs of people for a short term basis. Non-governmental organizations are not trained for pubic safety efforts but relief efforts during an incident. These duties may include providing a short term shelter, food, or even a point of contact during an incident as seen in the American Red Cross (2011) video provided in the Week 8 resources (Haddow, Bullock, and Coppola, 2014).
Non-governmental organizations such as the Red Cross are recognized by the federal government as a key player in disaster relief efforts. In disasters declared by the President, the Red Cross takes on a role working with the federal government to support the temporary housing and care of mass people. The Red Cross often helps with feeding both the disaster relief workers and the people affected by the disaster. The government takes a more long term role in housing after a major disaster through programs such as the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These relief programs are aimed at rebuilding after the incident versus the non-governmental organizations whom provide short term assistance during and/or directly following a disaster (Haddow, Bullock, and Coppola, 2014).

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

One of the more famous experiments is the Pavlov dog experiment, which described unconditioned and conditioned responses. James Watson went one step further describing behavior from what then emerged as Behaviorism. It was B.F. Skinner that shaped Behaviorism into its current state, through research on operant conditioning. Behaviorism still didn't provide all the answers; psychology continues to evolve into different areas such as cognitive psychology. Explain why Pavlov's experiments in reflexology were an important part in the development of psychology. Describe behaviorism from Watson’s perspective; then, compare and contrast his viewpoints with operational positivism and the prevailing functionalism. What are the major similarities and differences between Watson and Skinner's behaviorism? From your understanding of psychological principles, which of them had a greater influence in the areas of both research and applied psychology? Psychology seems to have emerged as a science, but with an eclectic view of how to understand behavior. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
