- This presentation is an overview of a very complex problem in a very complex system. Social media is not only a set of technologies. A complex society has developed through the use of those tools. In an hour I can only scratch the very surface of some elements of the problem. I have put together links to further reading on topics in this presentation they will be available _______________________________. When I started in social media marketing before there was even a job title for it my biggest hurdle was companies discounted it as silly and irrelevant – they missed that it had become the new town square. It is where people hang out and exchange information. It has become a critical arena for our national security.

- Bots pushing election was rigged until about 8pm EST election night See it in the IRA Facebook content released by Congress Rally/Protest in small town in Texas – both sides drawn there by Russian agents
- Did it work? Just ask these people at a protest in Houston. Both sides were lured there by Russian trolls via Facebook Social media consumers primed to be influenced by social media Social media sites are machines designed to fine tune influence of opinion and action

Social media has brought the front line to American soil My goal is to inoculate American citizens against influence tactics on social media Education Generating more nodes of leadership behavior Counter measures

- Troll – originally people doing it for sport An example the online face of a a Russian toll account pretending to the be the official account of the Tennessee GOP The real Tennessee chapter complained to Twitter for months they were being spoofed Journalists quoted this account in stories Finally was taken down when a troll hunter proved it was fake & wrote a story about it
