THE RISE OF ENEMIES OF DEMOCRACY IN TURKEY UNDER THE
POWER OF ERDOGAN, IN THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE POWER OF
TRUMP AND IN ISRAEL UNDER THE POWER OF NETAHYAHU
Fernando Alcoforado *
Antidemocratic forces advanced in Turkey with the attempted of coup d´état and the
countercoup d´état in motion of President Erdogan, can advance in the United States
with the possibility of coming to power of Donald Trump and are advancing in Israel
with retrograde policy of President Netanyahu contrary to peace with Palestine in the
region. The fact that Turkey walking swiftly to the dictatorship of Erdogan, the United
States adopt a retrograde foreign policy under the leadership of Trump and Israel have
at its head a ruler as Netanyahu clearly unfavorable to peace with the Palestinians makes
it extremely complex geopolitical equation in Middle East, especially in the present
time of political conflicts, civil wars and the presence of the Islamic state ISIS) in the
region.
President Erdogan used the attempted military coup d´état of July 15 to launch a
countercoup d´état that is carrying Turkey into chaos and isolate it internationally. The
Erdogan government laid off more than 15,000 employees in the Ministry of Education,
257 staff in the Prime Minister's office and 492 clerics in the Religious Affairs
Directorate. In addition, more than 1,500 university rectors were dismissed. The purge
followed the dismissal of 8,800 police, and prisons of 6,000 soldiers, 2,700 judges and
prosecutors, dozens of governors and more than 100 generals - almost a third of the
highest military ranks. 20 websites of news were also blocked.
The open conflict between the armed forces that guarantee the secular state in Turkey
and the Islamic government of AKP, party Erdogan, already before coming. The
Islamization policy of Turkey seemed to be getting the better under Erdogan, after
massive purge in the military. Since the mass protests in 2013 in Taksin Square in
Istanbul, Turkish society was divided. In foreign policy, Erdogan could deteriorate
relations with global and regional partners such as the crisis in Syria to support the
opponents of the Assad regime, intensified the struggles in Turkish Kurdistan, putting
the country in a civil war. With Egypt, Erdogamn, supported the general Islamist
Mohamed Morsi who was ousted. The relationship with the European Union was ruined
after Germany recognizes the Armenian genocide of 1915. With the attempted military
coup d´état and the countercoup d´état of Erdogan, Turkey is losing also the opportunity
to join the European Union in the foreseeable future, tensions with United States grew
with the Kurdish question and the killing of Russian bomber in Syria caused a crisis
with the Russian government.
In Turkey, the thesis that the military coup d´état was against totalitarianism of
President Erdogan, is working on the contrary, because he himself now in countercoup,
gathered more forces due to rapid victory, the arrest and summary execution of
opponents, including hundreds of soldiers, dozens of Turkish army commanders and
even prosecutors and judges, and censorship of dozens of media outlets considered
"against the government". The coup d´état poorly executed and countercoup d´état of
Erdogan resulted in the weakening of his political enemy Muhammed Fethullah Gülen,
self-exiled in the United States, and provided to Erdogan's great support of Turkish
population. In practice, the countercoup of Erdogan, great article writer and political
strategist, put the future of Turkey exactly where he most wanted: in their own hands.

What is settling in Turkey is indeed an exception regime. It is typical of exception
regimes people stop to be innocent until proven otherwise.
In the United States, it appears that the Republican Party will compete in the upcoming
presidential elections with a candidate who represents the worst of what exists in
American politics. The Republican Party is, according to Thomas Friedman, in an
article published in The New York Times under the title O Partido Republicano acabou
(The Republican Party is over) (<http://noticias.uol.com.br/blogs-e-colunas/colu>), a
party of religious conservatives, angry white men who fear they are becoming a
minority in their own country and hate trade, opponents of gun control, anti-abortion
supporters, small business owners against the regulation and free markets and
entrepreneurs for and against free trade. The Republican Party have held together during
the Cold War, but at the present time at its core there was a common denominator, not a
vision of the world, not a real conservative scheme. Donald Trump has emerged as an
attacker specimen that came to dominate the Republican Party. Friedman says in the
article cited above that the party is over.
In Israel, under the power of Netanyahu, his policy towards Palestine goes from bad to
worse, according to Thomas Friedman, in an article published in The New York Times
under the title Premiê do Estado "Israel-Palestina", Netanyahu contribui para afundar
seu país (Prime Minister of the State "Israel-Palestine" Netanyahu contributes to sink
your country) (<http://noticias.uol.com.br/blogs-e-colunas/coluna/thomas-
friedman/2016/05/27/premie-do-estado-israel-palestina-netanyahu-contribui-para-
afundar-seu-pais.htm>). Netanyahu just forced the resignation of Minister of Defense,
Moshe Yaalon, former Chief of Staff of the Army, who is a decent man, a soldier model
determined to preserve the army as an army that considers its performance based on the
most high standards of integrity in the midst of a very dangerous environment.
Netanyahu plans to replace Yaalon by the extreme right Avigdor Lieberman.
Lieberman, who is being investigated for corruption, think of blowing up the Aswan
Dam in Egypt and condemns as traitors Israelis who want Israel to leave the West Bank.
In describing the exchange Yaalon by Lieberman, the Nahum Barneam columnist for
the newspaper "Yediot Aharonot", he wrote: "Instead of presenting to the world a more
moderate government before the diplomatic battles to come in the fall, Netanyahu
presents the most radical government already existed in Israel's history". The Yaalon
himself warned: "extremist and dangerous forces took Israel and the Likud movement,
destabilizing our home and threatening to harm its inhabitants". The former Minister of
Labor Defense, Ehud Barak, said: "What happened is a hostile takeover of the Israeli
government by dangerous elements". The former defense minister's Likud, Moshe
Arens wrote in "Haaretz" that Netanyahu and his cronies of the extreme right "insulted
not only Yaalon, but the Israeli army". This whole episode began on March 24, when
Azaria , a doctor, was videotaped shooting wounded Palestinian. This was one of two
armed Palestinians with knives stabbed an Israeli soldier, slightly injuring. Azaria just
decided on their own to kill him.
Yaalon and the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Gadi Eisenkot, reacted promptly,
saying that this is not the way the Israeli army should behave. Azaria was indicted for
murder and improper military conduct. Initially, Netanyahu also said that the murder
violated the values of the Army, but when his electoral base of Israeli settlers on
Palestinian land came out in defense of the assassination, Netanyahu changed his
position. All this deeply troubled Yaalon and Army leadership, and occurred on the Day
3. 3
of Holocaust Remembrance in Israel, when the Vice- Chief of Staff of the Army, the
general Yair Golan, speaking to the nation, said: "It's scary to see the horrible
developments that occurred in Europe during the Nazi started to unfold here". Yes, you
read it correctly.
The religious philosopher of the Hebrew University, Moshe Halbertal said that we are
witnessing "the party of Israeli government being transformed from a nationalist
hardliner party, which used to have a humanitarian and democratic basis, on an
ultranationalist party, which is now defined by turn against the internal 'enemies',
courts, NGOs, the education system, the Arab minority, and now the army, anyone who
is in the path of its project of permanent occupation of the West Bank. Having failed to
present a solution for external enemies, now Likud focuses on internal enemies. This is
a major transformation in Israel and should be viewed with great concern". The Army
leadership, Halbertal added, "is trying to transcend this war of everybody against
everybody and impose a moral order in the chaos, rather than inflame it". Netanyahu
does the exact opposite. For those of us who care about the future of Israel, this is a dark
time, concludes Halbertal.
The Middle East geopolitical scenario is extremely dark with Erdogan dictatorship in
Turkey, the possibility of victory of Donald Trump in the next US presidential elections
and the worsening outlook of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis with Israel under Netanyahu
command. Turkey plays a strategic role in the region where it is located on borders with
Russia and Iran, sworn enemies of the United States, with Iraq and Syria where there
bloody civil war and established the Islamic State (ISIS) and be a member of the
military organization NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to the service of
United States in the confrontation with Russia. The United States exert strategic role in
the world as it presents the greatest economic and military power on the planet whose
interests in the region involve the effort to prevent Russia to retake its superpower status
in addition to dominate the main producing area of the world's oil located in the Middle
East and ensure the survival of its ally Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians, Arabs
and Iranians. Finally, Israel plays also an important role in the region to serve the
interests of the United States and to seek their survival as a nation hard-won after the 1st
World War. It is, therefore, a geopolitical chess that could only be resolved if the UN
restructured exert an effective global governance and not as current tool of the great
powers.
