Britain is slowly emerging from lockdown. But both the coronavirus public health crisis – and the economic crisis it has caused – are far from over. The Government has delivered unprecedented support to protect firms and families from the effects of shutting down the economy. But getting the economy back up and running again represents an even tougher policy challenge, especially with COVID-19 still looming large. With the Chancellor set to outline the Government’s next steps on Wednesday 8th July, he has many big questions to answer. What size of stimulus for the economy should the Government provide? Should it return to tried and tested policy tools, or are new approaches needed? How can policy navigate the uncertainty of a potential second wave? And how much should we worry about the cost of this policy action? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions ahead of the Chancellor’s statements. Following a quickfire presentation of a major new RF report on how to support the recovery, we will be hearing the views of Shadow Business Secretary Ed Miliband and former Conservative Cabinet Minister Amber Rudd on this critical question.
