Editor's Notes
He was born in 1884 in Missouri.
He was the oldest son of
In high school, his biggest thrill was to carry her books home after school.
When he was six years old he went to school and met his sweet heart. All through school he was in love with this little girl.
He and his sweet heart graduated from high school in 1901 and went their separate ways.
In 1910 they got reacquainted. He was a farmer on the family farm. She lived at home with her mother.
She had a very domineering Mother. Her father committed suicide when she was in high school. Her mother expected her to stay home and take care of her. And they may never have married except that fate stepped in.
He began to court. He would visit her on weekends and during the week he would write her letters. This went on for a whole year until he finally got up the confidence to ask her to marry him. He did it by letter. Then he waited on pins and needles until her answer came. And the answer was no.
He wrote her back and said that she let him down in such a kind and caring way, he was still going to court her. And he did for 2 more years. Finally she said. “If I marry anyone, I will marry you.
He says “No,”. I can go to war and get wounded and I don’t want you to live with that. I can go to war and get killed and I don’t want you to live with that. If I come back healthy, we will be married.”
While fighting in France, he carried with him the picture of his sweet heart.
In 1917, the United States entered World War 1. And the young man when he found out, volunteered to fight in France. When his sweetheart found out about it, she said I will marry you now. Now think about this. What he has hoped for and dreamed he now had in the palm of his hands.
After fighting for two years, he came back home healthy and fit. And two months later, they were married.
I want you to think about this. He was six years old when he met his sweetheart and thirty-five when they were married. Twenty-nine years.
Talk about persistence. The difference between the winners and the losers is in this one little word: persistence. Winners keep going long after the losers have given up.
