Which would you rather have: a website that’s fast or a website that’s perceived as fast? The answer is “Both!” The list of performance best practices is long and well known, but there’s been less focus on the user’s perception of speed. In this presentation Steve Souders provides examples of how the perception of speed is completely independent of actual speed, and techniques for leveraging this perception gap to create websites that feel fast.

technologies as there is no clearly defined method of creating a forgery. This research examined the
perception of the signature to the forger (how easy an individual perceives the signature to be forged),
and whether there were any characteristics common among the groupings of difficulty. The dynamic
variables of the signature were then examined to establish which statistical variables were susceptible
to forgery using forensic tools. Overall, it seems that both the genuine and impostor groups do not
single out a specific dynamic trait within their judgment of an “easy” or “difficult” signature.
Furthermore, it also shows that individuals have difficulty in assigning a speed to their signature – i.e.
the perception of speed is different for each individual (both genuine and impostor), and additionally,
both the impostors and genuine users ranked their signatures differently when asked about the

This talk shows how different Java MQTT libraries can be utilized for professional and personal projects to build efficient and scalable solutions for (mobile) devices. You will also see how modern technologies like WebSocket can be used in conjunction with MQTT to build real time-push services to bring data from sensor hardware to browsers in a scalable manner.

JavaScript consumes more CPU than loading, layout, and rendering combined. Byte-for-byte, JavaScript inflicts more delays on sites than any other resource, and yet the amount of JavaScript on sites continues to grow.
In this session you'll learn the latest techniques for measuring and improving the impact JavaScript on your site, including: using the User Timing Spec and Long Tasks API to track the CPU cost of JavaScript for real users, moving expensive JavaScript off the main thread, using code coverage tools to reduce your JavaScript, and understanding why defer is probably a better technique than async for loading JavaScript.

Users want both, but sometimes the interplay between design and performance feels like a fixed sum game: One side’s gain is the other side’s loss. Design and performance are indeed connected, but it’s more like the yin and yang. They aren’t opposing forces, but instead complement each other. Users want an experience that is rich and fast. The trick for us as designers and developers is figuring out how to do that.
The answer is to adopt an approach that considers both design and performance from the outset. With this approach, designs are conceived by teams of designers and developers working together. Developers benefit by participating in the product definition process. Designers benefit from understanding more about how designs are implemented. There’s an emphasis on early prototyping and tracking performance from the get-go.
With new metrics that focus on what a user actually sees as the page loads, we can now bridge the technical and language gaps that have hindered the seamless creation of great user experiences. In this presentation, Steve Souders, former Chief Performance Yahoo! and Google head performance engineer, explains how promoting a process that brings design and performance together at the beginning of a project helps deliver a web experience that is both fast and rich.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
