Promoting Magic Places in Europe: Past, Present and Future
Visit to Óbidos and Lisbon - THE OCEANARIUM
It opened in 1998 and its theme was "The oceans, a heritage for the future".
Visitors will never cease to be amazed as they journey through Europe's largest
Oceanarium. Inhabited by 16.000 animals and plants representing over 450 different species,
the Oceanarium offers visitors a unique and enchanting experience.
The Oceanarium is Europe’s largest aquarium. In the world, just one aquarium has
larger dimensions: the Osaka Aquarium in Japan, which was built 10 years ago by the same
architect who designed the Lisbon Oceanarium – Peter Chermayeff.
Motivated by the pollution that is seriously threatening the health of the oceans and
due to the over exploration of resources, the founders of EXPO'98 planned to build a giant
aquarium. And just like that the Oceanarium of Lisbon was born, devoted to the oceans and
their preservation.
