Should openness be the default approach in higher education? (ALT-C 2014)Liz Masterman
This document discusses whether openness should be the default approach in higher education. It explores reasons why openness is important, such as optimizing advancement of knowledge and tackling complex problems. The study focuses on areas like sharing resources, open pedagogical models, learning in an open world, and the influence of open practices in research. Interviews with academic staff provided insights into resource sharing, knowledge construction, and professional learning through open educational practices.
Close ups show a character's whole face to convey emotion and story, while extreme close ups focus on just the eyes to scare audiences or show internal experiences. Low angle shots look up at characters for drama, while high angle shots look down from above. Extreme long shots show faraway scenery, and medium shots capture characters from the waist up during conversations.

The document discusses several major film genres:
Action films involve physical stunts, battles, and heroes fighting villains. Adventure films feature exciting stories in exotic locales similar to action films. Horror films are designed to frighten audiences with terrifying events and monsters. Science fiction films envision futuristic technology and settings like distant planets and aliens. Comedies aim to provoke laughter through exaggerated situations, characters, and humor. The document also notes there are many subgenres within these categories and other genres like drama, crime, and historical.
The document tells the story of shepherds watching their sheep on a dark hillside near Bethlehem. An angel appears surrounded by bright light, telling the shepherds not to be afraid and to go to Bethlehem to see the newborn baby Jesus. The shepherds hurry down the hill and find Jesus, bowing before the child.

How to increase the membership of women in rotaryPablo Ruiz Amo
Carolina Ruiz Amo organized a Rotary Cupcake Charity Course to promote Rotary, especially to women. Over a month, she promoted the event through various media to get over 30 women registered at €40 each, with the goal of raising €1200 for charity. On Rotary's anniversary, two teachers taught morning and afternoon sessions on baking and decorating cupcakes. The event helped promote Rotary's image, was fun for participants, taught new skills, introduced women to Rotary, and raised funds to help those in need in the community.
Shot angles are a cinematic technique used in filmmaking. Different angles when filming a scene can change the audience's perspective and how they view the characters in the story. Common shot angles include close-ups, mid shots, long shots, and establishing shots which provide context about the environment and setting.
Little cherry virus-2 is one of the causes of little cherry disease in western North America. It is transmitted by mealybug insects and causes smaller cherries, higher cull rates, and impacts color, shape, taste and flavor. While some varieties like Bing and Sweetheart can show reduced symptoms in subsequent years, fruit production and quality are never fully restored. Proper control involves managing mealybug vectors with insecticides, using virus-tested rootstock and budwood from certified nurseries, and promptly removing infected trees.
The document outlines a story idea involving the power of a full moon, magical nights, and a cap. It lists potential locations like the author's house and an old hospital. Equipment would include a camera and laptop for editing. A storyboard and script are referenced elsewhere. Personnel would include actors, makeup, a director, and sound person. Props and costumes include normal clothes for an excursion, bed sheets, and makeup like mascara and red liquid. The budget notes they do not need funding as everything will be done at school.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices. This presentation delves into the technical innovations underlying TENNs, presents real-world benchmarks, and elucidates how this cutting-edge approach is positioned to revolutionize edge AI across diverse applications.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024Vadym Kazulkin
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
