What is the true state of the so- called “American Dream”
today? Is it still around, waiting to be achieved by those who work
hard enough, or is it effectively dead, killed off by the Great
Recession and the economic hardships that many Americans have
come to face? Statistics reveal alarming facts, including trillions of
dollars lost in the stock market (Paradis, 2009). While these losses,
combined with admittedly high unemployment in the past few
years, have contributed to seemingly dismal prospects for
prosperity in the United States, I believe that the ideals and values
of the American Dream are still very much alive. In fact, the
original term “American Dream” was coined during the Great
Depression by James Truslow Adams, who wrote that the American
dream “is that dream of a land in which life should be better and
richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according
to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or
circumstances of birth” (1931). I would redefine the American
Dream today as the potential to work for an honest, secure way of
life and save for the future. Many liberal economists and activists
say that the American Dream is dead, but I say that it’s more alive
and important than ever— and that it is the key to climbing out of
the Great Recession, overcoming inequality, and achieving true
prosperity.
Despite the harshness of the Great Recession, a 2009 New
York Times survey found that 72 percent of Americans still believed
it was possible to start poor, work hard, and become rich in
America (Seelye, 2009). In the same survey, Americans were also

asked questions about what they believed constituted being
“successful,” with the majority naming things such as a steady job,
financial security for the future, being able to retire without
struggling, and having a secure place of residence. Less common
were responses about owning a home or car and being able to buy
other expensive goods, implying a subtle shift from the American
Dream of the past to a more modest one today. In many ways, the
American Dream of today is a trimmed down version of its former
self. The real sign of success in our society used to be owning
expensive items, namely cars and homes, and acquiring more
material wealth. Living the American Dream meant going from
dirt poor to filthy rich and becoming more than you could have
ever imagined. Today, most people do not strive for a rags- to-
riches transition, and instead prefer a stable, middle- class lifestyle,
one in which they can focus on saving money for the future and

New jobs are being created at higher rates than have been seen in decades. The unemployment numbers are down considerably. Home values have begun to rebound. The stock market is soaring. Oil is under $50 per barrel serving as an economic boost for many Americans. In many ways, today’s economic climate is perhaps as ideal as it could be. However, the reality is that consumer confidence is still quite shaken. A recent poll conducted by the New York Times revealed that “the public is more pessimistic than it was after the 2008 financial crisis that it is possible to work hard and become rich” (Sorkin & Three-Brenan 1). This view may seem incongruent with the current economic stability; however, a careful consideration of recent history and future trends shows that this viewpoint may have significant merit. The truth is that the American Dream—for decades the one defining hope for many Americans—is on the verge of extinction.

These immigrants worked their way up on the societal ladder over time, with each generation hoping that their children would have it better than they did. Thus, the trend of upward social mobility was born. The concept of rewarding hard work largely originated from the industrial revolution and the policies of the early automotive companies who paid their workers higher wages in order to allow them to earn enough to become customers as well. The plight of the American worker improved over time through actions of labor unions, employment laws, and a steadily increasing wage. There were many reasons to support the notion of the American Dream.
In many arguments, it is important to define key terms. Here the student defines the term “American dream.” This is important because different people may have different ideas as to what this term means.

Without the emergency measures of 2008-09, the U.S.
economy would be far worse off today.
The publicity surrounding former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s memoir prompts a
look-back at the stunning array of policy responses promulgated by the Fed, Congress and two
administrations to avert catastrophe during the financial crisis in 2008-09. This is important
because many of these initiatives haven’t aged well in the eyes of politicians and the public.
TARP, fiscal stimulus, quantitative easing and auto bailout remain dirty words to many people
who increasingly blame them for prolonging the Great Recession and the slow pace of recovery.
But in a study released Thursday for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, we found the
reverse to be true: These extraordinary policies ended the crisis and jump-started an economic
recovery that is stronger in the U.S. than in most countries.
Specifically, we estimate that:
• The peak-to-trough decline in real gross domestic product, which was barely more than 4%,
would have been close to a stunning 14%.
• The contraction would have lasted three years, more than twice as long as it did.

• The federal budget deficit would have ballooned to $2.8 trillion, equal to 18% of GDP,

• Today’s economy would be far weaker than it is—with real GDP about $800 billion lower, 3.6
million fewer jobs, and unemployment still at 7.6%.
The overwhelming nature of the fiscal and monetary policy responses is the main reason we
didn’t suffer a much-worse fate. Yet history is in danger of giving the powerful 2008-09
responses a misguided Bronx cheer.
Start with TARP. The Troubled Asset Relief Program was deeply unpopular in part because it
was so large—a $700 billion bailout fund—and aimed primarily at “Wall Street.” It felt wrong to
bail out guilty parties, and many.
