- So what we’ve done is take thisA typical logbook – that has very little value from an informatics perspectiveAnd turned it into this
- This is a screenshot of the mobile application running on an iPad. The forms mimic a California trawl logbook. We grab location data automatically using the GPS radio onboard the mobile device. Logbook information is sent over the air to ecatch.orgThere’s a bit of business process reengineering going on hereAnd since we are capturing digitally we can do a lot of great stuff with the data following the mantra of “capture once at the source and re-purpose those data to achieve new outcomes”
- So in near real time we are able to visualize this information on a web based mapThis information tells us things about the sustainability of the catch – for example the proximity to sensitive habitats, how much by-catch (things you didn’t want), and maybe even how far from port you had to travel to get these fish which is a good proxy for the carbon footprintAdditionally fishermen are able to share these data with each other and potentially management agencies thus facilitating this notion that better decision are made with better information and empowers the fishermen to be the agent of positive change in fisheries reform
- Taking this a step further, once we have these data it can power a whole bunch of analytics (or business intelligence) that is very relevant to the resource and fishermen’s bottom lineExplain quota systemReferenced tied up at the dock, more context on quota fishingAddress problem statement more clearly
