In the history of the United States of America, there have been
a lot of crazy things that have happened and most of them have
stemmed from our own ignorance and lack of respect for other
people. In the past, such problems were balanced out by
common sense and accountability, which in this day and age, is
becoming completely non-existent.
This brings me to one of the biggest epidemics in this country, an
epidemic more dangerous than the Zika virus, and that is
ignorance. Ignorance breeds hate, hate breeds violence, and
violence brings irreparable damage to the fabric of this country.
Once this happens we are no longer a country united but a
country too stupid to realize that we have strayed this far from
our roots. The 2016 election is the biggest example of how
ignorance has given fuel to subjects that didn’t need to be fueled.
Of course, I’m talking about the rising popularity of a businessman
turned reality TV star now turned Republican frontrunner Donald
Trump.
If you had told me five years ago that Donald Trump would be
on the fast track to being the next President of the United States,
I would have laughed in your face and told you that you were
crazy. Of course, I would have to wipe a large amount of egg off
of my face and eat a large quantity of crow because sure as shit,
The Donald could potentially be our next President. If that
doesn’t scare the hell out of you, then I envy your naïveté.
We all know politics is just one big theatre of the absurd… so
much so that these motherfuckers will say anything that will get
them elected, but the Donald took it to a whole new level by
Ignorance breeds hate, hate breeds violence and
violence brings irreparable damage....
playing on the ignorance of the American people.
If any ordinary politician continued to say the things that
the Donald has said over the course of his campaign,
they would have been most certainly burned at the
political stake before they could utter another syllable.
However, for some reason, the natural charisma that
the Donald has, has brainwashed a lot of people into
thinking he is the savior of America and will make it
great again. The only person with more charisma than
the Donald who has the ability to brainwash a nation of
people with hate speech was probably Adolf Hitler. Like
Hitler, Mr. Trump has given the American people a
bogeyman to pin all of their problems on. Hitler had the
Jews, gypsies, and gays; Donald has Mexican immigrants,
Middle Eastern immigrants, and practically anybody that
utters a bad word about him or his campaign.
His little campaign slogan, Make America Great Again, is
more abhorrent ignorance because this country, while
great, throughout history has committed numerous acts
that are not so great. For a country as young as we are,
there are more skeletons in our closest than most
countries that have been civilized long before the white
man Columbus stepped foot off the Mayflower.
We’ve had two holocausts and the near decimation of
the Native American people, in an effort to steal their
land. And let’s not forget slavery, where we ripped a
group of people from their native land, put them in
chains, freed them, and finally segregated them, all the
while making them feel (barbaric- ) like third class
citizens. Some would also say that stray dogs were given
better treatment than the African American slave. We
even had a little thing called The Eugenics Movement that
extracted people whom the white man thought deemed
unfit to live in decent society, then ordered forced
lobotomies and put them in asylums. Hitler was a fan of
that movement.
Needless to say, we’ve done a lot of fucked up things in
our country’s history. Let us not forget the way we treat
our immigrants. This country was built on the backs of
hard working immigrants. There is not a person in this
country, unless you’re American Indian, who can say
their ancestors all came from this country. This country
was founded by the English until we broke away from
that and America was born. The founding fathers built
this country on the belief structure that you could come
here and make a better life for yourself without
persecution. I guess it sounded better on paper because

the UK, the U.S. has the ability to sell within the entire European market, but if the UK leaves
the European Union, they may be faced with a new set of standards and regulations. Not
knowing what those are is what may leave many in the U.S. on high alert.
There are some who think the Brexit will have no real effect on the United States. It would
depend on what industry you are talking about, some would debate.
Be assured the U.S. will be watching closely what happens over the next coming years.
It’s about freedom for the UK and it’s about some change that will indeed trickle into the
U.S. What that long-term change will be is the big question.
Some Americans who wanted the UK to remain in the EU believed that it would have kept
the alignment of U.S. foreign policy objectives in a strong place.
Donald Trump was in favor of the UK leaving EU. He wrote, “Voters in the United Kingdom
chose to leave the flawed and failing European Union and reassert control over their borders,
politics and economy, taking a brave stand for freedom and independence.” He added,
“They put the United Kingdom first, and they took their country back. With your help, we’re
going to do the exact same thing on Election Day 2016 here in the United States of America.”
President Obama had the opposition opinion. By April 22, 2016, it would have been his
fifth visit to the UK, and he has strong opinions on the UK remaining in the EU. He stated,
“And the United Kingdom is at its best when it’s helping to lead a strong Europe. It leverages
UK power to be part of the European Union.”
Online retailers are worried because many of them accept orders from consumers in the
UK. There concerns with the Brexit is over goods priced in US dollars which will now cost
more for the British consumers. However, if the British consumers are concerned about
jobs and the economy, they could very well cut back on their spending.

Ten minutes till 11:00 PM in the nation’s
capital a lawmaker sips the remains of his
Glenfiddich. It’s Thursday night on K Street
and the bar looks like a Brooks Brothers ad
mixed with equal parts narcotics and nostalgia.
For some this is just another end to a
grueling week, but for Washington’s chosen
few the night is just beginning. As everyday
American’s we have this perception that
politicians arrive in DC with their briefcase full
of district issues to be addressed the moment
the name plate on their office is affixed to the
door. I’m sorry folks, Mr. Smith is no longer in
Washington. Political office is no longer a
calling but a career path, however for argument
sake it has to be one of the most appealing
careers path’s on the market today. Name a
career that’s primary job function is to
continuously seek a lifetime promotion for little
or no effort of achievement along the way?
American political office has steered far off
course from its original prescribed destination
to represent the interest of its constituents,
only to become a placeholder position that
serves up more party favors and VIP room
experiences than the Wynn in Las Vegas. No
sex in the champagne room right? WRONG,
there’s sex and plenty of it, just ask Anthony
Wiener. I wonder if the Board of Director’s at
Georgetown Law have considered offering a
course on the proper management of personal
sex workers while in office. This reminds me
of the roaring 80’s we like to criticize so much,
coked up Wall Street bankers and stock
brokers trading wildly and riding the greed
train all the way back to the Upper West Side.
The US Government took massive action to
shut this type of behavior down quick, yet
somehow they forgot to look behind door
number 2, the buddy lawmaker who
aggressively is on the phone launching
investigations while bending over his
secretary’s ass to do another line. I guess
Washington got a pass, the problem is they
never got off their smoke break.
In 2015 3.2 Billion dollars were spent on
lobbying in the United States, it is no question
Big Business runs this country and the idea of
the people’s vote is for all purposes dead and
forgotten.

the top issue that was lobbied in
2015 was “Miscellaneous
Business”, bringing in a total of
523 million dollars, this comes
as no surprise. No wonder the
American people have a severe
lack of trust for our government
when 1/2 a billion dollars is
spent marketing for an issue that
is as mysterious as accepting
the terms and conditions for an
Apple iPhone upgrade. Ringing
in at number two & three is
Healthcare and Finance with
combined lobbying dollars a
little over a billion. At least we
have the surety of knowing the
subject matter of these issues,
God forbid we actually
understand where the money is
being spent. Topping the list of
spenders in 2015 is the ever
growing US Chamber of
Commerce writing a check for a
little over 84 million dollars. On
its face there is nothing wrong
with lobbying for a cause you or
your corporation feel strongly
about, after all the constitution
provides it’s liberty’s to all
Americans including
corporations. A liberty however
becomes a hindrance when it
controls so much, that any
misjudgment or failure in
leadership, not only effects the
entity but the spider web of
people surrounding it. Has the
US Chamber become too big for
its britches? Even worse has it
become merely a vessel for
corporations to funnel money
free of market backlash or
critique? Recently the
knowledge of the Panama
Papers sent shockwave's of
discontentment to the American
people. I like many others were
not surprised. In the 80’s and
90’s if you were a millionaire it
was just as chic to have an
offshore bank account as it was
to buy a $500 handkerchief from
Bergdorf Goodman, it was just
something you did. So the
question remains if we imprison
corporate executives for Tax
evasion, then explain how
funneling money through the US
Chamber instead of writing the
check yourself make’s sense? In
summary our government, as
glorified as it may seem, is
starting to appear more and
more everyday like the Monarchy
we left over 300 years ago. Isn’t
it ironic how history repeats
itself?

‘vertical integration’ – a new corporate concept. To this end GM was formed from the
amalgamation of 13 car companies and 10 parts manufacturers, and by 1920 GM had absorbed
Frigidaire and Fisher Body as the company expanded into all areas of the new economy that it
was in part building.
All cars were bought with cash and the Model T Ford was the market leader. To compete,
William Durant introduced “installment sales”, and within a decade three-quarters of all new
cars were bought on time plans. This shift from cash to installments radically changed America,
ushering in the inflated credit economy that in part helped the US’s enormous economic boom
in the following decades.
GM’s history is also a catalogue of controversies. In World War I GM fueled the American
military machine manufacturing everything from ammunition shells to bombers, but in the dire
days of the Great Crash of '29 GM stock plummeted from $73 to $8. William Durant was
humiliatingly ousted and lost a personal fortune of $100 million dollars. He is said to have
written in his will that all he had to bequeath were the clothes he was wearing. With the rise
of socialism and workers’ rights, GM faced growing union problems.. In a single strike in the
1930s over 100,000 United Auto Workers downed tools. Pierce DuPont (who invented financial
forecasting and calculating rates of return on capital - now standard corporate practice), and
who ousted William Durant; summoned a thousand National Guard and tensions exploded when
police shot fourteen workers. From that time on the union movement gained unprecedented
numbers and became a part of the American economy.

World War II offered GM a

company soared, but there were major conflicts
of interest, as GM owned Opel, one of the chief
manufacturers for Hitler's Nazi War Machine.
After the war there were several anti-trust suits,
including accusations that GM was being given
preferential status as a defense contractor. It
had, in fact, snared contracts on which its bids
were notably higher than those of the
competition. This tendency would continue into
the Vietnam War and would become the subject
of a congressional investigation.
By 1949 GM had become the world's
largest corporation, but like America itself, it
was about to get richer. In the 50’s Harlow
Curtice (Time’s Man of the Year 1955) innovated
large cars and chrome that became the style of
the decade and GM became the first company to
make 1 billion in profit in one year. Another
bonanza for GM came with the largest public
works project in history - President
Eisenhower’s massive interstate highways
construction, but controversy erupted when he
appointed a committee headed by Lucius D.
Clay, a GM board member. GM anticipated the
program and bought Euclid Road Machinery
Company in 1953, which produced more than
half of all off highway dump trucks. By 1959
the government decided the buyout was in
violation of the Clayton Antitrust Act, but
mysteriously the government didn't press its case
until 1967. An anti-trust suite was brought
against GM, and was finally brought to trial, but
only after the project had basically been
completed. Hundreds of thousands of miles had
been paved with GM asphalt, opening the West,
penetrating the frozen north, and connecting the
continent in a kind of concrete internet for cars.
Like WWI and II, the Korean War was another
golden goose for GM. President
Eisenhower made GM President and CEO
Charles Wilson the Secretary of Defense and
General Motors became the largest commercial
provider of military vehicles in history. Wilson
famously said “what was good for our country
was good for General Motors, and vice versa”.
Once again an antitrust suit was filed, and once
again GM was found guilty of vested interest,
but once again only after the fact.
In the 1960s and 70s America rose to true
superpower status and GM was along for the
ride. The 1969 Apollo II astronauts were guided
to man's first landing on the moon, and safely
back to earth, using GM’s navigation systems.
GM dominated car sales throughout the decades,
remaining the world leader in revenue and
market share, but as the 20th century closed,
GM’s dominance waned. The 1980s saw the US
auto industry undergo a massive restructuring,
with thousands of lay-offs and economic turmoil.
In the small town of Flint, Michigan, 40,000 jobs
were lost. GM began to downsize, streamlining
their product line, dismantling their trucks
division, and reforming the management
structure of Sloan. In the 1990’s the problems
continued. The rise of the Japanese auto
industry ate at GM’s market share. The Persian
Gulf War (the last
US military victory) drove gas prices up. GM’s
product line of gas guzzling SUVs drove sales
down and GM suffered its worst losses. After
the 2001 September 11th attack on New York,
the pension market collapsed and GM’s fortunes
further diminished. After the 2007 financial
crisis, GM finally collapsed and had to be bailed
out by the government.
The 20th century was a great journey for
America, the road from a new industrial nation
to becoming the world’s biggest superpower, and
helping drive it through the decades, providing
the road, the vehicle and often the drivers - was
America’s most successful company, General
Motors.

Inevitably, machines will take over
most jobs humans do. Look at
what’s going on right now.
Amazon has a distribution center
that is completely automated. Fast
food places are experimenting with
kiosks designed to eliminate
counter workers. Driverless
vehicles will be all over the roads in
five years or less, and the need for
long-haul truck drivers will be put
in jeopardy. Google any of this and
watch the videos. You can buy a
car, get a loan from a bank, and
have items shipped to your door by
drone. No human interaction
necessary. “No human interaction
necessary” would make a pretty
ominous tagline for some
commercial. Pretty soon we’re
going to be asking the question
“What good are we humans?”
When we were all in high school,
we all knew the choice for our
future…white collar or blue collar?
If a student went to college, got
some kind of degree, then the
student had their “bus ticket” (white
collar) into corporate America. The
students who didn’t usually learned
some kind of trade (blue collar)
through apprenticeship or trade
school. Now both collars seem to
be disappearing altogether.
Community Bankers and Merchant
Mariners are just two examples. I
use these jobs as examples because
I have experience in both. They
are both honorable professions that
are fading away because of
technology.
If you live in small town America, I
don’t have to tell you community
banks are closing. People get paid
by direct deposit, and most pay
their bills online. So they don’t
even have the need to walk into a
branch. Small business is good for
a community bank if they have
daily deposits and many
transactions like a grocery store but
that isn’t enough to sustain a
community bank without the people
who live in that community as
customers. Even the “big dog”
Bank of America announced
recently that they were laying off
8,000 people. If that’s the case,
then BOA is getting “leaner and
meaner” which in this writer’s

A Tesla Model S with the Autopilot
system activated was involved in a fatal
crash, the first known fatality in a Tesla
where Autopilot was active. The
company revealed the crash in a blog
post posted today and says it informed
the National Highway Transportation
Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the
incident, which is now investigating.
The accident occurred on a divided
highway in central Florida when a
tractor trailer drove across the highway
perpendicular to the Model S. Neither
the driver — who Tesla notes is
ultimately responsible for the vehicle’s
actions, even with Autopilot on — nor
the car noticed the big rig or the trailer

banking in general. And they are
one of several big banks in this
country.
The Merchant Maritime profession
is dwindling as well. Currently,
some companies are testing
unmanned freighter and tanker
ships to deliver goods all over the
world. Think what it might look
like in ten years, it could be
completely unmanned. If not
completely, then run by a greatly
reduced crew. What about the
tugboats that help dock these
ships? Will they be completely
automatic? Will automated crew
boats take robots to automated oil
platforms offshore? It is
certainly possible if not probable.
These are but two professions.
Think of the film industry for a
moment. If CGI gets better, then
actors themselves will be put out
of work. Why wouldn’t filmmakers
create their own characters on a
computer if it looks just as good as
a real actor on film or video? If the
actors are no longer needed then
what about the steady-cam
operators, editors, grips, and
caterers? How many more
professions will be affected in the
same way?
The labor participation rate in
America is roughly 62%. That
means 38% of the population is not
working. Granted, retirees and
children are included in this, but it
still translates into roughly
94,000,000 Americans, not in the
labor force.
The GDP has been under 2% for
almost eight years. Under these
conditions and with the rise of
autonomous machines it is
reasonable to assume humans will
render humanity obsolete because
we are going to put ourselves out of
the workforce. You could make the
argument I’m some kind of
Luddite, and I respect that point,
however, if machines take over
most jobs then we as humans must
adapt and go into jobs such as
coding. Well don’t you think if we
can teach machines to do
everything from serving our
burgers, making credit decisions,
and transporting goods across land,
sea, and air, don’t you think we can
teach machines to write their own
code? If machines can write their
own code isn’t that considered AI
or at least on the very cusp of it?
There is a quote from an old
scientist in the early eighties movie
Tron. “If machines start to do the
thinking for us (humans) then
where will we be?” Good question.

Almost 400 years have passed since the first pilgrims sought freedom away from heavy taxation, restriction on
religious freedom and suppression of individual liberty. Much has changed since the first pilgrims landed in Cape
Cod on a cold November day in 1620. However nothing would be more surprising than the fact the Monarchy we so
happily fled from now appears to value freedom and individuality more than the United States. The vote on Brexit is
much more significant than most American’s realize. Media outlets that have highlighted the potential results of
such a vote have focused on trade restrictions, US market responses and altering international relations.

latest picture of Kim Kardashians ever growing ass is much more important. Can you hear the sarcasm, I digress…
Take a moment to read between the lines when financial experts tell you the health of the US markets depends on
‘normal’ international activity or Britain leaving the EU could put America in an awkward relationship between the
two. I’m sorry sir can you repeat your statement? America used to lead the world not by money nor military power
alone but by Courage, Leadership & not hesitating to tell someone or some country to proverbially f**k off. However
from the reactions to Brexit it seems America has now turned herself into the likes of a school counselor who
everyone hates to visit on a Thursday afternoon. That’s right we are here to stop fights, counsel emotions and read
manuals about the safe way to deal with bullies and pressure. What is even more troubling is a rhetoric that shows
this country's stability depends greatly on the World Stage. Are we hinging on the brink of collapse?
Hats off to the UK, they have just participated in something that hasn’t taken place in 100 years, a real Country wide
election where the people spoke and the victor took home their trophy. Britain recognized a disease spreading and
they did not hesitate for a third party referral but took it upon themselves to self-medicate, come to collective front

America and cars. They seem synonymous. Through the 20th
century as America changed the automobile, the automobile
changed America. It changed the architecture of the typical
American dwelling, altered the conception and composition of
the urban neighborhood, and freed homemakers from the
narrow confines of the home to explore en masse the great
American expanse. No other historical force so revolutionized
the way Americans work, live, and play.
The main engine driving this phenomenon, and a mirror
to the darker currents of American capitalism, was the century’s
biggest and most successful corporation - General Motors. Its
business philosophy wrote the book of corporate structure and
helped create the global capitalist system. It has been said that
GM President Alfred P. Sloan Jr. had a more significant impact
on
America than almost any other man of the first half-century.
Here’s why.
In 1895 Ransom Eli Olds, claimed, “I didn't like the smell
of horses and so I created a horseless carriage,” and built the
one cylinder, three horse-power Oldsmobile. He also developed
the first modern assembly line and the first mass produced
automobile. In 1908 Olds merged with
William Durant’s Buick Motor Company and The General Motor
Corporation was born. Durant, a school drop-out, but hugely
successful producer of horse-drawn carriages, invented the
system of dealer franchises. Sales rose and within 5 years the
US produced 90% of the world's motor vehicles. While Ford
stuck with the simple Model T Ford, Durant designed a range
of cars for different tastes and helped give birth to the modern
idea of ‘consumerism’. Durant also envisioned

A woman in America wakes to a
blue sky. In one area of the
country, songbirds
sing a melody that
greets the day. In
another area, the
low buzz of the city
begins below her
window. She opens
her eyes feeling
refreshed. For a
minute or two, she
focuses on the
comfort of her bed,
but eventually, the
drive for coffee gets
her going.
Everything is grand
until she lights up
the screen and connects to the
external world.
Damn.
She’s been pummeled with
images of modern-day
expectations
of beauty
that only five
percent of
women on
the planet
are capable
of achieving
w i t h o u t
Photoshop,1
and after
P h o t o
s h o p p i n g
that number
drops to
zero.
Most women
know what happens next. She’s
now in a fit trying to decide what
to wear for the day and even if
she feels somewhat attractive,
she still notices that thing about
her body she feels isn’t perfect
and then… *sigh* … dwells on
it. It kills her spirit; it kills her
beautiful songbird, morning
buzz, comfortable pillow, happy
coffee, lovely morning, spirit.
This damaging objectification
has to stop. Only four percent of
women in America think they’re
beautiful. Eighty percent of
college women report that their
parents or siblings or both told
them negative things about their
body. Women with low self-
esteem tend to stay in abusive
relationships; they’re less likely
to start their own businesses,
and they earn less than people
who are confident.2
And what if they are single and
want a relationship?

Kim, a woman who signed up on a popular dating
site in hopes of finding a friend or possibly
something more, described what she experienced
there as, “absolutely the most humiliating
experience of my life.” Some men thought it was
OK to

and some
thought it
was perfectly
acceptable
to ask her
what size
pants she
wore before
they went
any further.
What Kim
saw and
internalized
was a trend.
S o m e
p e o p l e
seemed to
be ordering up the perfect date the way they would
order a hamburger for lunch: hold the pickles,
extra mayo please-- and God forbid she wears a
size twelve. (For the record, there is beauty at any
size). Those who missed out on Kim lost a great
opportunity. She is now happily married to
someone who understands her beauty better than
anyone.
The reality is, people want to be attractive, and
they want to feel better about themselves. So what
can they do to improve their lives?
The answer is: they can choose to be happy. I’m
not off my rocker. Happiness can be a choice,
even in this tough world. Let me explain.
Traditionally, people set goals that they think will
bring happiness. Is this you?
“Once I get promoted, I will be happy. When
I find that new relationship I will be happy. I will be
happy when I lose ten, twenty, thirty pounds.”
The new science of Positive Psychology says
otherwise. The examples above have you stuck
because happiness is not now, but always on the
other side of a goal. And once you get there, there
is always a new goal. You find a new job, and now
you need a promotion to be happy. You lose ten
pounds then (surprise!) you discover the new
imperfections with your body. There is no resting
point. You never really get there. This is called the
hedonic treadmill. The happiness generated is
momentary, and you go back to the same default
level of unhappiness.
The reality is, what happens in the external world
predicts only ten percent of our happiness. First
we need to decide to be happy. Then we can take
the steps that will change our brains accordingly.
This article will give you the formula for
synthesizing happiness.
What does synthesizing happiness mean?
According to Psychologist Dan Gilbert,
“Natural happiness is what we get when we get
what we want, and synthetic happiness is what we
make when we don’t get what we want.

“Synthesized happiness is every
bit as real and as enduring as the
kind of happiness we get when we
get what we were aiming for.”
It is inevitable that some will claim
synthetic happiness isn’t as good
as natural happiness. For those
people, here is why it’s important:
just like natural happiness, synthetic
happiness floods the brain with a
chemical called dopamine.
According to Positive Psychologist,
Shawn Achor,
“Dopamine has two functions. It
makes us happier by flooding positivity
into our brains and it turns on all of
the learning centers in our brains,
allowing us to adapt to the world in a
different way.”
This is huge! What this means is that
our brains perform better when we
are happy. Our creativity,
intelligence, and energy levels all
rise and we perform significantly
better at work and at home. We
become more confident, and
confidence is attractive. There is a
ripple effect that takes place. When
we’re happy, we bring more
happiness to those around us.
We know that we want to be happy,
the question is, where do we start?
TURN THE PAGE FOR THE
FORMULA
The most important takeaway from
this is to stop berating yourself.
Stop damning your beautiful body.
We want to start a revolution against
objectification. We want to stop
being admired for our form without
content. And women, we must stop
objectifying men, and ourselves too.
Remember, global change starts
with small changes. Be pro-active.
Sound your voice. Stay strong.
We can’t change overnight the
beauty standard that was created
by an industry worth over a billion
dollars. What we can change is our
internal happiness and our
confidence. This can have a lasting
impact on our lives and the lives of
those around us. If enough women,
and men, decide to take these
steps, just imagine the changes we
can make for the next generation
and for the generation after that.
Don’t put off changing your life
waiting for a giant change in the
world. Happiness starts now. It
starts within you. This is the
happiness revolution.

SIX STEPS
Here is the formula:
1) Scan the world every day for three
things for which to be grateful. This
creates a pattern of looking for the
positive instead of the negative.4
2) Journaling. Writing one positive
thing down at the end of each day
allows us to relive it and makes it more
real or tangible.4
3) Exercise. This teaches us that
behavior matters.4 It also helps to
reduce stress and anxiety.
4) Meditation. This helps us get over
our cultural ADHD we’ve created by
multi-tasking.4
5) Practice random acts of kindness.4
This creates positivity that’s not only
meaningful to you, but to others,
helping to make them happier.
6) Write one good thing that you love
about yourself down on a sticky note
and put it in a place where you tend to
beat yourself up the most. (Like a
mirror)

Within the past couple of years, many social
media sites have developed an undesirable
reputation that (for the most part) has stemmed
from social issues like cyber bullying, anxiety,
and depression. Although it has become a trend
to succumb to the adverse effects that these
sites can have on our quality of life; it is an
underrated, powerful tool that has the potential
to change our social media obsessed society for
the better.
This past year was the first time that the issue
of social media caught my attention. While
walking to class one day, I overheard a
conversation between two girls who were a
few feet in front of me. One girl was criticizing
herself and saying that she was “fat” (which she
wasn’t), while the other was exclaiming how
much she wished she had the glamorous life of
a famous Instagram model whose page they
came across. After I had heard the words
“hashtag goals,” I grew slightly frustrated
because there are so many other things that are
much more worthy of our attention.
As a contemporary society, we tend to pay
more attention to what we don’t have, what
we want, and typically what is going wrong. But
what if we started to focus on the positive?

Social media is a huge, and not to mention, a
FREE resource we have readily available right
at our fingertips (literally). It provides us with an
infinite amount of opportunities to spread the
word about amazing things that are happening
around us.
According to digitaltrends.com, the average
American spends an alarming 4.7 hours on a
cellular device per day. If you take into
consideration that most people are only awake
for 15 hours, it becomes strikingly apparent that
most of us dedicate one-third of our life to
looking at a screen. 4.7 hours that are primarily
used to read tweets, Facebook articles, and
Instagram captions.
It would be unrealistic to think that we could
just drop these sites altogether and call it a day,
so that’s not what I’m suggesting. What I am
suggesting is that we stop focusing on the
pessimistic nature of something that isn't going
away anytime soon. If the time we spent on
networking sites were spent on presenting
positivity rather than mindlessly scrolling, we
could start a chain reaction of an active and
commendable movement of societal good.
Think about it. If, while scrolling through our
Instagram or Facebook feeds, we came across
more pictures of people supporting a cause they
felt passionately about, we would all become
more inspired to do the same. We are a mixed
culture of some of the most creative, inventive,
and compassionate people than ever before,
and its time to use our available resources to
our advantage.
We live in the land of the PEOPLE, meaning,
that we have all the capabilities to improve our
social surroundings. No matter who you are or
where you come from you have a gift and a
voice, so why not use it? There are a crazy
amount of pages that are spreading awareness
of issues that we need to be giving attention; we
just aren’t bringing them to light. A community
of networkers who utilize social sites for a
purpose will change the game.
Continuing to isolate our perspectives to what
we wish we had rather than making a positive
impact in even one person's life will ultimately
make us more obsessed with materialism and
worldly desires; aka “a cycle of evolving
discontentment”.

It felt amazing to not worry about
things looking perfect or creating
something to impress someone
else, but just to bring out what was
inside of me. I
felt I had found
my voice as an
artist in being
able to create
art for the sake
of my own per-
sonal release. It
was shortly af-
ter I started cre-
ating art in my own style and had
my own message in each piece,
that my teacher opened up and
complimented my painting. He
even went as far to bring the grad-
uate classes in to see what I was
doing. I felt like I had achieved
something great and wanted to
keep doing it.
A common theme I try to explore
within my fine art is the paradox
between what is good in the world
mixed with the hardships and pain
in life, and the beauty in the bal-
ance between the two extremes.
Good cannot exist without evil
and vice versa. You have to know
and experience some pain, to fully
appreciate and experience happi-
ness. Everything has a balance in
life, and I try
to explore
the beauty in
this balance
within my
work. I am
also greatly
influenced
by the fash-
ion designer
Alexander McQueen who explores
a similar concept. When feeling
uninspired I often look through
his big book on fashion I have in
my studio. His soft and feminine
clothes, mixed with skulls or splat-
ters of red signifying blood, play
with the same balance while look-
ing beautiful when worn on his
models.
JS Artist of old vs the artist of
today, what is changing in the
world of fine art, if anything?
Ed I feel like technology has really
changed the art world in the last
twenty years or so and continues
to do so. The term “mixed media”
has become widely used to encom-
pass lots of various mediums in-
cluding work created digitally
mixed with traditional art meth-
ods like painting or drawing. For
example, a painting can now be
uploaded digitally and changed by
incorporating it in digital art. The
once traditional and often rigid
rules about what art was defined
as, seems to have faded in today’s
art world. New art forms are being
recognized. Graffiti art is now re-
spected as a fine art form where in
the past it was primarily viewed in
a negative light for defacing public
property. Often times now proper-
ty owners are paying the artists for
graffiti to be added to their walls
and this art form is being recog-
nized for it’s unique skill. Aside
from blossoming new art forms,
artists today can do things today
that were not possible before with
marketing their artwork. Technol-
ogy has also really changed the
way we display our art as well.

Strange as it may be its
actually refreshing and visually
appealing. Young women in
2016 have chosen to speak out
regarding the issues facing
women in this day and age,
however, instead of speaking
against unequal pay in the
workplace or burning bra’s at
the Lincoln Memorial young
women everywhere have
shown their support for
shooting big guns and
supporting their favorite
candidate in a tight V-neck with
just the right amount of
cleavage. We hear you loud
and clear, your hot, smart and
you know how to use a firearm
in a low cut Bernie Sanders
Tee. Recently Dana
Macleandon, consular to the
Camden Mafia and the Terrorist
Mouthpiece, published his
theory on understanding the
dynamics of women called,
‘The Hot Crazy Matrix’. This
study outlined the correlation
between a woman’s good looks
and her craziness. While
historically accurate this
groundbreaking study awoken
a sleeping giant and women all
across America began to make
it their mission to challenge the
idea that being hot and crazy is

Social media such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram,
and snapchat, are all ways to exhibit work instantly
in the public eye. I have been able to meet people
and show them my work from all over the world,
make sales, and gain contact with galleries thanks to
social media. It eliminates the middleman and al-
lows you to have instant contact with whom you
want to speak with.
JS Favorite place to paint?
ED My favorite place to paint is in my studio. I like
to have things around me that inspire me, my music
on, and my cat lounging on the windowsill next to
me. I like to be alone in my thoughts, and feel free
to let my mind roam.
JS Given the chance, with unlimited resourc-
es & time what type of artwork do you dream of
producing?
ED I would like to continue to explore unique ideas
for paintings and perhaps explore some new ave-
nues. I stay busy with commission orders- both Pet
Pawtraits and my “fine art” commissions, which is
great, but often I don’t have time to create new ideas
for fresh bodies of work. If time and resources were
not an issue, I think I would want to explore some
different mediums. I once created a life-sized horse
sculpture that was on display in downtown Lexing-
ton, KY and later 1) purchased by a horse farm to
go on their property. I created a fiberglass body of a
thoroughbred racehorse completely covered in
found metal objects, with a metal horse heart hang-
ing from a cut-out in the center of the horse. The
sculpture called “Le Couer de Cheval” (meaning
“Heart of the Horse”) explored the idea of a horse
being both a “money making machine” in the
horseracing industry, while also being an animal
with emotions and feelings. The whole process from
finding the material to use, working in a much larger
scale than I was used to, and applying new tools and
addressing new problems along the way in creating
the piece was a fun challenge. Aside from a few
sculpture classes I took in college, working in 3-D
was a completely new concept for me. I would love
to do some more sculptural work, and am hoping to
one day create a life sized polar bear created in a
similar way.
JS How long have you been painting profes-
sionally
ED I’ve been painting professionally for about 12
years. After I graduated from college I had a friend
ask if I could paint a painting of her dog and wanted
to pay me to do so. Instead of painting a traditional
realistic painting of her dog, I used my expressionis-
tic style and attempted to capture the dog’s personal-
ity. She was thrilled with the outcome and told her
friends, and by word of mouth alone I received
dozens of orders for pet paintings. I’ve continued
doing pet paintings ever since, and created a side
business called “Edryden Pawtraits” with a separate
website and business concept than my fine art. I
donate 10% to an animal shelter of the client’s choice
and have had orders all over the United States, and
even an order as far as Germany! Aside from
Edryden Pawtraits, I also create my personal “fine
art” that I show in galleries and sell through my fine

JS What is your biggest
struggle as an artist?
ED My biggest struggle as an art-
ist is time management. I have
never been great at it, and when
working for yourself, every min-
ute matters. Currently, my studio
is at home and it is tempting to do
everything else that needs to be
done around the house (workout,
laundry, cleaning, walking the
dog, etc.) before getting to my
studio. Thus running out of qual-
ity painting time.
JS What piece of your work
are you most proud of?
ED I am most proud of a piece I
did about 2 years ago called “Pre-
cious Evils of Time”. Creating
that painting was a turning point
for me as an artist. I was working
2 jobs at the time, stuck in a rut
financially, and wanting to give
up on my art career altogether. I
had one large canvas left and de-
cided to just start painting what-
ever I was feeling on it. The
painting explores the idea of time
being evil, as it quickly passes by
taking years and lives with it. It is
also about a young woman’s
motherly clock alerting her that
life is passing her by. The desper-
ation I was feeling due to several
things going on in life personally,
were brought to existence on my
canvas. I felt naked showing the
inside 1) of my heart to ev-
eryone who saw it. Despite my
fears, I entered it in a contest at
Neiman Marcus where I worked
downtown, and it ended up win-
ning an award and hung
in the Main Street win-
dow for a month. Short-
ly after it sold and re
energized my passion
for making art.
JS Do you believe
that art is still relevant
with millennial's?
What advice do you
have for millennial's
who want to learn more
about fine art?
ED Art is very relevant
with millennial's. I feel like no
matter what age you are or what
decade you are born in, art will
always be a way of selfexpress-
ion. Art can be seen everywhere
from cell phone designs, to dance
moves, to large murals on build-
ings. The definition of art evolves
and changes just like the culture
we live in. For those who want to
learn more about art, I always
suggest starting with the founda-
tions. Art galleries and museums
are great places to see art and the
evolution of art into what it has
become today.
JS What is your favorite
food?
ED My favorite food is probably
pizza. Or chocolate chip pancakes.
I like both, but try not to have
either very often.
JS How would you describe the
art scene in Dallas?
ED The art scene is definitely
thriving in Dallas. Art is growing,
new galleries
and art
districts are
opening, and
I feel like it is
possible in
Dallas to be
successful as
an artist if
you work
hard. People
here are very
open minded
and creative,
and I feel that
there is a wide audience to
connect to. I have really enjoyed
watching the city grow in this area
over the years, and I think it will
continue to do so.
JS Where are you from?
ED I am from Dallas. I’ve lived in
a lot of different places since
leaving for college in 2000: from
Tucson, AZ, to Pullman, WA, to
Lexington, KY, to Boston, MA,
and now back home to Dallas.
JS Favorite Color?
ED Red- the color of passion.
Something about that color jumps
out and is so bright and alive, but
can also represent death. I like
that it can symbolize both
extremes and still be beautiful at
the same time.
JS One word to describe your
artwork?

JS Any advice to kids who want to be
an artist, where should they start?
ED Art is a great way to spend time. It is
therapeutic, and constructive, and you
have something to show for your time,
instead of watching TV or playing video
games all day. Start early and find ways to
learn new skills. Art camps, online DIY
projects or apps, or just hanging out
doodling in a sketchbook. Don’t get
frustrated learning all of the basics in the
beginning, because it can be boring. But
use them as building blocks to create your
own style later. It is a hustle to make a
career out of being an artist, you have to
stay devoted to your art and yourself,
without comparing yourself to others. It is
not a 9 to 5 job, it is an entire lifestyle you
must commit to.

JS E, what first inspired you
to become an artist?
ED I began doing art at a very
young age. I would go stay with my
grandparents in Lubbock and
there wasn’t much to do there, but
my grandmother always had an
unlimited supply of art supplies
for my sister and I to play with. I
would spend hours in her “bird
room” drawing and painting with
watercolors and tempera paint. I
used to love how excited she would
get whenever I would give her
whatever it was that I was making.
My Nana would sing my praises
and hang it up for all to see. She
still has several of these early
scribbling's up in her house today.
From the joy that my art generated
in my Nana, to the dark and
mysterious paintings I often did in
college, I realized I could
communicate with people through
my art- I could make them feel
happy or sad when viewing my
work. I felt that I could say things
that I would never be able to say
with words alone. Each piece is an
experiment to create a feeling or a
thought within the viewer, to make
them feel the desired message I
want to express.
JS Who is your biggest influ-
ence in regards to painting?
ED My college art professor,
Mr., R. I used to get frustrated
in my first painting classes in
college at Texas Woman’s
University. My professor would
never compliment students on
their work. Our class was small
and art for the most part had
been the one subject that came
easy to me. I would do all of the
assignments to the best of my
ability, and to my knowledge,
had done a good job- yet he
never said a word about my (or
anyone’s) work. He used to say
to the class “The work (meaning
the art) is damage!” He wanted
us to take out our feeling and
emotion on the canvas.
Frustrated with the painting
class and my professor, the
concept clicked about releasing
my emotion into the work. After
this understanding, I was
addicted to painting.

Empty Mailboxes And Phones
That Do Not Ring

Silence is defined as the absence of any
noise or sound; stillness. However, for a
freelancer, it is the most deafening (and
terrifying) noise one can experience.
The absence of your ringtone, text tone, or
email notification tone going off for a
lengthy period of time segues into an
almost five stages of grief like state for a
freelancer.
First, there is denial. Your phone must be
broken.
Overnight, without you knowing, your home
had a cement shell constructed around it,
preventing you from getting a signal.
You think you recall reading something
somewhere (Facebook maybe?) about a
bug in your model phone causing it not to
receive phone calls or texts.
Your Internet service provider has really
dropped the ball this time. You cannot
seem to receive important emails from
potential clients, yet somehow, these
emails about switching your car insurance
keep trickling in (can it really save me 15%
in just 15 minutes?).
Whatever the technological shortcoming that has
put a curse upon your household may be, it is
making you quite…
Angry. Stage two.
Clearly, these people are idiots who do not realize
how good you are and how much they need you.
How dare they blow you off and treat you like this?
You feel like a lover scorned. Why won’t they return
your call? You have been cheated on you know it.
They are seeing another creative. I bet they are
younger, better looking, with a bigger....camera than
you. All the beautiful work you have done together
means nothing. They faked every firm handshake
and smile.
Perhaps you contemplate confronting them, publicly
or on social media. Or maybe slash their dolly
wheels and spray-paint "HACK" across their slate.
But no, that is not you. So what can you do to
salvage the relationship? What can you do to get
them to look at you with that same creative passion
they used to?
Hello, bargaining. Stage three.
Maybe you are charging them too much? Delivering
too little?
Maybe if you showed up 30 minutes before call time
instead of 15?

You knew you should have gone with the 85mm
lens instead of the 50mm, they said they wanted
a choker, not a medium shot. How could you
have been so foolish?
You can change, you promise. It will be different
this time.
If they just told you what they wanted, you would
do it. Don't leave.
It is too late. The silence has set in and taken
hold of you.
There is nothing wrong with your phone or
Internet. They are not “cheating” on you. They
have all left you.
You blew it. You are so...
Depressed. Stage four.
Your parents were right; you are not Spielberg.
Your exes were right; you are delusional.
Your cat was right; the dead bird in your shoe
was a thoughtful gift.
Whatever the scenario; you are wrong.
Whether you went to film school, design school,
or the school of hard knocks, the phrase "would
you like fries with that?" is spoken with the same
tone of failure.
What were you thinking? You weren't. You were
blinded by the mirage of success and financial
freedom. By red carpets and black ties. By
inklings of being self-made and self-sufficient.
Whatever you were thinking; you were wrong.
There is nothing you can do now but...
Accept it. Stage five.
Accept the security of the nine to five. Accept
the steady paychecks with their automatically
deducted taxes and social security. Accept that
you tried and failed. It is okay; you do not need
the-
Ding.
"Are you available for a project?"
You reply "yes" to the soundtrack of a church
choir singing "Hallelujah."
You are back.
This was a good career choice.
All is forgiven, and all the sins of the client world
have been absolved. You are in demand and
wanted. The phone calls and emails start
coming in. It feels so good.
Until the next time the mailbox is empty and the
phone does not ring and the vicious cycle, the
rinse and repeat of disdain, laps your ego.
This is the world of freelance. This is all that you
love and all that you hate in summation.
If that ding were not a fix, you would not be an
addict like the rest of us. For some artists, drugs
are a creative lubricant. For us, the creation of
art is a life lubricant. It helps us get through the
hard times. Withdrawal from it makes us
dissident and distant, sluggish and solemn. We
do not need an intervention; we need
inspiration.
So here we are, members of “Freelancers
Anonymous”, seeking validation and
compensation to create the art that we love. We
meet every day in all corners of the world to be
each other’s sponsors, supporters, and friends.
We owe it to one another to drown out the
silence of our grieving colleagues when it sets
in. We do this by writing messages on each
other’s walls, we tweet them, we “like” what they
do and say

Some of us may have never met in the flesh, but
we are bonded by this life choice, for better or
worse. It is a union of hope, hope for others to
succeed, hope for ourselves when we see
others succeed, and hope that our time doing
what we love resembles more of a marathon
than a sprint.
We will all experience the silence at one time or
another. We will all have empty mailboxes and
phones that do not ring. It is what we do for our
fellow freelancer that helps them through the
stages.
We need to be more of a collective than a
competition, more of a fraternity than a fight
club, which, according to the first and second
rules, we do not talk about.
I write this from a place of first-hand knowledge.
The wound of the silence and the five stages is
still very fresh and open. More so, the wounds of
the silence are many. Scars and war wounds
collected over 14 years. It won’t just happen
once; you need to understand and prepare
yourself for that.
I, myself, contemplated throwing in the towel
and accepting defeat during this most recent
bout with of silence. Besides my biggest
supporter and confidant, my wife Tiffani, it was
my closest network of friends and colleagues,
the set veterans who had been there and the
young hopefuls who saw inspiration for
themselves in my trials and tribulations, that
helped get me through to that next ding, that
next ring, that next gig.
Now I must be off; I’ve got moving images to
create. Until next time, don’t be sad that it’s over
or happy that it happened; be happy because
it’s not over. Cheers!

QUALITY MOVIES?
“You get what you pay for!” How
often have we proclaimed this age-
old idiom
when a product or service completely fails our expectations?
You’re deciding between two beers – one six-pack is $12.99, the other is
$4.99, so you decide, well, all beer can give you a buzz, so let’s buy twice
the amount of the cheap beer and have a big ‘ol party. You take a sip.
“Ugh! This beer tastes like piss!” after which your friends proclaim,
“What do you expect? YGWYPF!” The idea behind YGWYPF is that the
quality of something increases as the price increases – or the more you
pay, the better it must be.

We get suckered into this dilemma all
the time. Is Evian better than local
bottled spring water? Of course it is
– Evian is 2x the cost. Adding to the
complexity of YGWYPF is the notion
that people will want something
simply because it costs more. A
“Veblen good,” named after
Economist Thorstein Veblen, refers
to luxury goods like cars, designer
clothes, and pricey wines that are in
demand because they are expensive.
In fact, a recent survey conducted in
the UK determined that people were
more likely to say a certain wine
tasted better because it was pricier!
In the meantime, Danish website,
runrepeat.com, found that in many
cases, the 10 most expensive running
shoes were rated over 8% lower
than the 10 cheapest running shoes.
Then there’s Hollywood. Tinsel town
is notorious for abusing YGWYPF.
The thought process is something like
“The higher the budget and the more
money that is thrown at a pic, the
more likely the film will do well at the
box office and therefore, the better
the film must be, right? Nowhere can
we see this misappropriation in
marketing more abused than in big-
budget Hollywood films.
Take for example, Disney – arguably a
company that represents quintessential
Hollywood in terms of an influence
and authority with regard to
storytelling.

Here we
have an action film, long considered
the best-bet for blockbuster success,
with a bona-fide star, that brings a
necessity to get butts in the theater.
This film cost $300,000,000. No small
change by any account and yet this
film earned a terrible score of 31 out
of 100 by Rotten Tomatoes, one of
the most reliable websites that
aggregates reviews to determine how
well a film is received. The film made
around $89,000,000 – an epic flop.
Disney’s John Carter cost around
$307,000,000 – one of the most
expensive films in history, only to
earn a
horrendous 14
out of 100 and
o n l y
$180,000,000.

“a mess” and it
appears that no
matter how
much money
was thrown at
this project, it
was by all critical accounts a colossal
failure. Way at the other end of the
spectrum are the low-budget indies.
Hollywood often invokes the reverse
of the Veblen theory with these little
guys - independent films have tiny
budgets – how good can they be?

Well, history shows, very very
good! Irish indie flick, Once, was
made for only $150,000
(produced for a song as they say)
before going on to win the 2008
Independent Spirit Award for
best foreign film, an Oscar for
Best Original Song and two
Grammy nominations for the
soundtrack. The film garnered a
97 rating and earned upwards of
$19 million – a return of over
6,000%. The Blair Witch Project
had only $60,000 and went on
to earn an 86 rating and over
$248 million – a frighteningly
impressive 20,000% return!
And one of the most profitable
movies of all-time had one of the
lowest budgets of all-time.
Armed with only $15,000, the
creators behind Paranormal
Activity pulled in a worldwide
gross of almost $197 million, an
otherworldly return of over
655,000% that earned a
respectable 83 critical rating.
What is going on here?
Perhaps it is a studio mentality –
only make films that are
“guaranteed sellable” and throw
as much money at it as possible
to make it happen. Or maybe it’s
the notion of making a film
appeal to all audiences. Famed
screenwriter Robert McKee
called writers of these films
“hacks” – those who write for
the market instead of from the
soul.
Hollywood wasn’t always like
this - American Graffiti was made
for $777,000, earned a 95%
rating and scooped up over $140
million – a formidable 9,000%
return and often thought of as
breaking open the newly
discovered “teen film” market.
Long on the list of top
screenplays of all-time, Rocky
had a budget of only $1 million
before snagging a 93 rating and
$225 million, filling the studio’s
pocket with an 11,000% return.
Now that millions of cheap
videos are being uploaded on a
daily basis, stealing tens of
millions of eyeballs, Hollywood
may now finally have to confront
the limitations of YGWYPF. The
very notion that dollar signs
equal success is being tossed out
the window faster than the
scripts on any executive’s desk.
Perhaps the question
Hollywood needs to ask itself is
will anyone get what you are
paying for?

The 90’s brought us
Tarantino, Linklater and
Smith. “Rebels with
dialogue”. But gone are
the days of a convenience
store slacker or video-store
movie geek getting together
with their buddies, firing
out rapid-fire pop culture
references and taking
Sundance by storm. Despite
technology making it
cheaper and easier for
wanna-be auteurs (I
thesaurused that one) to
create the next wave of
magic it seems we are still
turning to the original
Tarantinos of the world to
get our fix. Maybe it’s me.
As I get older and become
more of the old “in my day”
curmudgeon, I have lost the
love of the over the top
action film.
he summer blockbuster season is
in full swing and once again we
are met with an excess of
sequels, remakes, reboots, and
superhero franchises that are so
intertwined I’m not sure even
Marvel or DC knows what
universe their characters are in
anymore. I’m expecting the Flash
to challenge Quicksilver to a foot
race to the death at this point. I
used to get pumped up for
summer films. Not so much
anymore. I’ve had my fill of
Michael Bay explosion orgies. (Don’t get me wrong; I’d love to
work on a film with a $200 million budget. I’d cater the hell out of
that shit.) But for $200 million can’t we do better? Out of this
curr ent crop of emotionless and CGI filled
non sense, where are the mid-level
bud geted, well-written, well-
acted movies that actually have a
well-thought out story? Well, I don’t know.
We are long overdue for the next generation of cutting
edge, take-no-prisoners directors and writers that don’t just
throw a spandex clad, A-List star in front of a green screen and
yell action. The 70’s brought us such game changing films like Taxi-
Driver, Chinatown and The Deer Hunter, films that gave the finger
to the establishment. Even films like the original Star Wars and
Rocky, which went on to become big blockbuster franchises, have
that independent spirit and grittiness.

It’s become all very seen-it-before
to me. The original Die Hard is the
perfect underdog beats the odds
story, with Bruce Willis showing
vulnerability and actually even some
fear and uncertainty. Also with, A
Good Day To Die Hard, John
McClane had become such a
cartoon superhero you might as
well have given him a cape and
some laser eyes. But I doubt it’s
me, because that would mean it’s
my fault. And if the millennials have
taught me anything, it is I’m the
victim here. Damn you, big studios.
My fear is that the” good old days”
are gone forever. With more and
more businessmen and accountants
(“the suits” as us artistic types like
to call them) running the studios
and no truly creative minds making
the decisions, the movie industry is
ready to suffer the same fate as the
music industry. Cookie-cutter, low-
talent filmmakers putting their spin
on an existing franchise. “Beiber
blockbusters anyone?” With
many more outlets popping up by
the day, like Netflix, Amazon &
iTunes, the onus is on the new
filmmakers to up their game and
stand out from an overcrowded
field. Start a new revolution. Maybe
after Transformers 9 bombs, the
studios will finally start taking
notice.

believe me go to yahoo finance
and check the yearly stock
history for Netflix and Amazon. Buy
in if you can because everybody
streams. Get your show when you
want it on your own time. “It’s the
new crack cocaine for the fading
cable age” and we all know what
it’s about. As I write this article my
fiancé’ sits in our bedroom binging
on “Orange is the New Black”. Ah,
how we consumers love our
convenience. This also means
something else, it is the dawning of
a new age for the indie filmmaker.
What does streaming have to do with
making an indie film? Everything.
Here’s what I learned when I made
my first feature for under $5K.
First off, forget crowd funding if
you’re starting from scratch. Crowd
funding works when you have half
the money in place before you even
launch your “please give me money”
page. The truth is no one gives a
damn about your film but you. You
can hang up the “angel investor” too.
Do you know of anyone (expecting
a return) going to invest in an indie
film in this economy?
There are several key people needed
to pull off a cheap indie feature.
They are the script/writer, DP,
Editor, Sound Editor, and the Score
Guy. (The score guy will be the
largest expense and I will explain
later.) Here is the breakdown.
Script: Few locations and characters.
You can’t have a scene with fifty
extras and not pay them unless
you’re the kind of person that can
talk the birds down from the trees.
Keep it simple. Use two to three
main characters and six to eight
ancillary characters with two or
three locations. Horror films, quirky

production with your DP right by your side.
Take your time on this because pre-
production is the most important aspect of
filmmaking. Set up every shot with the DP
beforehand and set a schedule that is
reasonable to stick to during filming days.
Feed your cast and crew.
Score Guy: The cost on this is $1200 to $1500
(for a reasonable one) and you don’t want to
skimp out on it. Use a pro. The producers
of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho said the film
sucked without the score. Would Jaws be any
good without the score? Yes, but not as. The
score makes the film.
So if you pull all of this together and it all
comes to fruition you have something you
didn’t have before…and that’s a product. It’s
a “B” movie product, but a product all the
same. And every product has a place
especially in streaming. Amazon, for example,
will offer the filmmaker 50% of all downloads.
So if they rent your “B” movie for five bucks
you get two fifty. Doesn’t seem like much but
it adds up quick if 50,000 people rent your
film. How many millions of people have

unreasonable number with good promotion
on social media. Don’t forget about Netflix,
Roku, and the other up and coming content
distributors. They are coming on strong and
are all hungry for content. It is the dawning
of the new age for the indie filmmaker.

call through www.imdb.com or other casting
website and you’ll be surprised how many

DP, Video Editor, and Sound Editor: You have
to find someone to shoot the film, edit it, and
get the sound right. If you can find someone
that can handle all three tasks then you have
hit the trifecta but chances are you won’t. It’s
usually three different people. This is the most
difficult thing to accomplish and there’s two
ways to do it. One way is to troll the local film
school in your area. There are plenty of
college kids looking for a project to work on.
It makes them more valuable when they
graduate because they gain actual experience.
The other way is to check out
www.stage32.com. It is the Facebook for
indie filmmakers and you can find your key
people there. Remember you have to pay the
DP, Editor, and Sound Editor (provided they
provide the equipment) but you can pay them
on a deferred agreement. It means they share

A young man awoke from his peaceful, sex-crazed slumber due to the intense
noise coming from the other side of his bedroom wall. The young man had been having
sex dreams, non-stop, for about two weeks. The noise appeared to take the form of a
horrible pop-electronic song being blasted by the next-door neighbors. He wanted to
escape this violating reality and go back to the warm, center of his horny dreams. But
the music was too loud and the dream was blurry to the point of disappearance. There
was no escaping reality.
The young man got up from his bed and into his oversized slippers. He grabbed
the first shirt he got his hands on, a dirty shirt from the night before, a shirt that reeked
of cigarettes and Mexican food. Before leaving his apartment he grabbed a glass of water.
Water’s taste is so empty, he thought. Why would God choose to create something so
necessary to human life and then give it such a boring flavor? It was too early to think
of crazy shit like this yet the young man was used to having ridiculous thoughts at all
hours of the day. He finished his water and stepped outside, ready to confront his neighbor.
He had no idea how this interaction would go down but it was too early to care.
He knocked once and the door opened. One knock was all it took. The door was opened
by a European looking fellow with blonde hair, a shiny goatee and a fedora. Who wears
a fedora while inside their own place? Who wears a fedora at all, in any situation? This
guy.
“Hello there, friend. Is something wrong?” he said, with a smile so wide it was
difficult to believe it was real. “Yeah, sorry to bother you, it’s just that it’s pretty early
and the music is way too loud, do you mind turning it down a bit?” The neighbor stared
right into the young man’s eyes for about thirty seconds and just as he opened his mouth
to give a response, the sound of a loud blender muffled made it impossible for the young
man to hear anything at all.. “I’m sorry, what was that?” the young man asked. The tall
European spoke louder but was interrupted once again by the sound of a blender. The
young man peered inside the apartment and realized that a beautiful, blonde woman, who
was wearing absolutely nothing, was using the blender. She was the most beautiful woman
the young man had ever seen and she seemed to be making a frozen smoothie out of
delicious, exotic fruits.
“I’m sorry,” said the European man. My wife likes to make smoothies while
listening to hardcore European techno, it has always been our morning routine.” The
beautiful woman looked over at her husband and exclaimed, “The juice is ready! Who
wants juice?” The European man got visible excited. “I do, Annika, but we must keep
the music down, for we are disturbing our nice, American neighbor.” The woman turned
red in the face, she was truly ashamed of her behavior. “I am so sorry!” she said. She
turned the music down and poured some of her fruity elixir from the blender into a glass
cup. “Please have some juice, it is a family recipe that you will surely enjoy.” She walked
over, carefully holding the glass and before the young man could react, she forcefully
poured it right into his mouth. The flavor was indescribable; it must have the best thing
to ever touch the young man’s lips.

“Oh my God” said the young man, in total shock. “This
is amazing.” His comment caused a small purple drop to slowly
drip from the side of his lower lip. The woman looked at the drop
and in an attempt to save it, she quickly reached towards it with
open eyes and used her precious, red lips to suck it right from the
young man’s mouth. “It’s good, isn’t it? Too good to let it go to
waste,” she said. The young man was so aroused and confused
that he could not speak. The woman then proceeded to grab the
blender and pour the sweet juice all over her naked body. “Your
turn” she said, “lick it all off!” The young man could not believe
what he was witnessing. He turned to face the woman’s husband
and he gave the young man a look of severe reassurance. “Do it,
boy, we must not waste the juice.” “We must not waste the juice”,
the boy repeated softly. He began to approach the woman and he
opened his mouth with great anticipation. He was ready to taste
her sweet, perfect body. He slowly grew closer and closer to her
glistening skin.
The woman looked right into his eyes and so did he. His
tongue was now inches away from her body when suddenly the
sound of electronic music grew intensely loud. He was so
distracted and annoyed. The music filled the entire room. His head
began to hurt and his vision grew blurry. The woman started to
disappear and so did everything else around him.
“Fuck! The juice!” he yelled and as soon as he opened his
eyes, he found himself sweating and in bed, with nothing but the
sound of his neighbor’s music shaking the bedroom wall. The
music reminded him that there is no escape from reality, and
reality fucking sucks. Disappointed, the young man got up from
his bed and into his oversized slippers. He grabbed the first shirt
he got his hands on, a dirty shirt from the night before, a shirt that
reeked of cigarettes and Mexican food.

The landscape for independent filmmaking has changed,
yet one thing remains the same and will always remain the
same throughout time: independent filmmaking requires
guts. More affordable digital cameras, non-linear editing
systems, compact studio lights, portable sound equipment,
and camera phones have given rise to independent
filmmakers and allowed them to own complete control
over their content, outside of the studio system, free of
corporate interruptions and creative restrictions. “Anybody
can be a filmmaker during this day and age”, that’s what
the naive say to those aspiring to make films. However,
those people are oblivious to the most essential ingredient
needed to creating an independent film: guts.
Nobody ever achieved their goals by sitting idle and
waiting for an opportunity to present itself. Filmmaking is
about “gutting up” and developing your ideas so that they
become a reality. It’s so much easier to escape into a
normal way of life, with a comfortable job, a stable
monthly income and an idyllic home in suburbia with a
beautiful wife and children.

While that all sounds wonderful, but an independ-
ent filmmaker must be willing to kiss that all good-
bye. Being an independent filmmaker is a full time
job that pays very little, sometimes nothing at all.
One must prepare themselves for the harsh reality
of turbulent ups and downs, an over-abundance of
work and then no work at all. Not to mention a
meager paycheck, maybe, if your film performs
successfully and attains an audience. Independent
filmmaking is a lifestyle, and it’s totally insane.
World War II gave rise to smaller hand-held 16 mm
film cameras that could be purchased and owned
by the general population. This sparked a move-
ment outside of the studio system led by avant-
garde filmmakers. These low budget, black and
white films were experimental and considered
works of art, rather than pieces of entertainment.
The independent movement cascaded into the
counter culture of the 1960’s when the studio’s
audience drifted away from massive musical pro-
ductions in Technicolor towards smaller films based
in reality and told from the outsider’s perspective.
Then came the filmmakers of the 70’s and 80’s. This independent genre which incorporated
science-fiction and fantasy with low budget filmmaking techniques. This eventually spawned the
generation “X” filmmakers of the mundane about drifters and misfits in the 1990’s. All of these
filmmakers from generations past had one thing in common: an unrelenting urge to pursue their art
and to showcase their uncompromising and honest vision to the world without the help of a major
studio. It’s the kind of filmmaking that required guts.

In 2015, audiences witnessed the release of , an independently financed film shot on a
modified Apple iPhone. is about a working girl who tears through Hollywood leaving behind
a path of chaos and destruction while searching for the pimp who broke her heart. The story is
definitely not blockbuster material, as it was scheduled for release in theaters during the summer
months, however through a successful run at film festivals across the country it attracted an audience
and ultimately found distribution. The filmmakers behind , Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch,
had no idea of the film’s final outcome before pursuing their project (after all no film can ever be
predicted as a financial success before its release). They most certainly were not trying to appeal to
mainstream audiences by creating a story centered on a controversial topic like prostitution and
transgender relationships. Regardless of the fact this topic, one that both the United States and rest of

the world frowns upon, Baker and Bergoch “gutted
up”, went forward and broke new ground in
filmmaking by creating a feature film made on a
camera phone.
Its guts that pushes a person to create, to want to
tell a story that is outside of the norm and present
radical ideas to the rest of the world. An independ-
ent filmmaker can own the most expensive and
state-of-the-art camera and equipment, yet
achieve nothing if they never step outside their
front door and explore worlds that are new and
unique. Go ahead and tell an independent film-

maker that it’s easier to make films during this
modern era of advanced technology and those
filmmakers, at least the ones that have actually
tried to produce and direct a project, will simply
shake their head in silent disagreement. It’s never
easy to make a film. It’s a whole lifestyle that
requires embracing. Sacrifices have to be made
and there can be no shortage of guts. Independent
filmmakers have more outlets available to them
through the internet and VOD (Video -OnDem-
and), but it still does not bring forth a stable
lifestyle. Aspiring independent filmmakers are
warned about this harsh reality in film school and
mentors alike.
However some let arrogance and conceit for great-
ness prevent them from understanding the guts
required to be a filmmaker on your own and
outside of the system. They will soon learn this
one way or the other. So in summary, I hope this
rant reaches out to filmmakers of new and inspires
them to lace up their boots, adjust the lens, and
start filming

NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 In the history of the United States of America, there have been a lot of crazy things that have happened and most of them have stemmed from our own ignorance and lack of respect for other people. In the past, such problems were balanced out by common sense and accountability, which in this day and age, is becoming completely non-existent. This brings me to one of the biggest epidemics in this country, an epidemic more dangerous than the Zika virus, and that is ignorance. Ignorance breeds hate, hate breeds violence, and violence brings irreparable damage to the fabric of this country. Once this happens we are no longer a country united but a country too stupid to realize that we have strayed this far from our roots. The 2016 election is the biggest example of how ignorance has given fuel to subjects that didn’t need to be fueled. Of course, I’m talking about the rising popularity of a businessman turned reality TV star now turned Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. If you had told me five years ago that Donald Trump would be on the fast track to being the next President of the United States, I would have laughed in your face and told you that you were crazy. Of course, I would have to wipe a large amount of egg off of my face and eat a large quantity of crow because sure as shit, The Donald could potentially be our next President. If that doesn’t scare the hell out of you, then I envy your naïveté. We all know politics is just one big theatre of the absurd… so much so that these motherfuckers will say anything that will get them elected, but the Donald took it to a whole new level by Ignorance breeds hate, hate breeds violence and violence brings irreparable damage.... playing on the ignorance of the American people. If any ordinary politician continued to say the things that the Donald has said over the course of his campaign, they would have been most certainly burned at the political stake before they could utter another syllable. However, for some reason, the natural charisma that the Donald has, has brainwashed a lot of people into thinking he is the savior of America and will make it great again. The only person with more charisma than the Donald who has the ability to brainwash a nation of people with hate speech was probably Adolf Hitler. Like Hitler, Mr. Trump has given the American people a bogeyman to pin all of their problems on. Hitler had the Jews, gypsies, and gays; Donald has Mexican immigrants, Middle Eastern immigrants, and practically anybody that utters a bad word about him or his campaign. His little campaign slogan, Make America Great Again, is more abhorrent ignorance because this country, while great, throughout history has committed numerous acts that are not so great. For a country as young as we are, there are more skeletons in our closest than most countries that have been civilized long before the white man Columbus stepped foot off the Mayflower. We’ve had two holocausts and the near decimation of the Native American people, in an effort to steal their land. And let’s not forget slavery, where we ripped a group of people from their native land, put them in chains, freed them, and finally segregated them, all the while making them feel (barbaric- ) like third class citizens. Some would also say that stray dogs were given better treatment than the African American slave. We even had a little thing called The Eugenics Movement that extracted people whom the white man thought deemed unfit to live in decent society, then ordered forced lobotomies and put them in asylums. Hitler was a fan of that movement. Needless to say, we’ve done a lot of fucked up things in our country’s history. Let us not forget the way we treat our immigrants. This country was built on the backs of hard working immigrants. There is not a person in this country, unless you’re American Indian, who can say their ancestors all came from this country. This country was founded by the English until we broke away from that and America was born. The founding fathers built this country on the belief structure that you could come here and make a better life for yourself without persecution. I guess it sounded better on paper because I

With your help, we’re going to do the exact same thing on Election Day 2016 here in the United States of America.” President Obama had the opposition opinion. By April 22, 2016, it would have been his fifth visit to the UK, and he has strong opinions on the UK remaining in the EU. He stated, “And the United Kingdom is at its best when it’s helping to lead a strong Europe. It leverages UK power to be part of the European Union.” Online retailers are worried because many of them accept orders from consumers in the UK. There concerns with the Brexit is over goods priced in US dollars which will now cost more for the British consumers. It’s Thursday night on K Street and the bar looks like a Brooks Brothers ad mixed with equal parts narcotics and nostalgia. For some this is just another end to a grueling week, but for Washington’s chosen few the night is just beginning. As everyday American’s we have this perception that politicians arrive in DC with their briefcase full of district issues to be addressed the moment the name plate on their office is affixed to the door. I’m sorry folks, Mr. Smith is no longer in Washington. Political office is no longer a calling but a career path, however for argument sake it has to be one of the most appealing careers path’s on the market today. Name a career that’s primary job function is to continuously seek a lifetime promotion for little or no effort of achievement along the way? American political office has steered far off course from its original prescribed destination to represent the interest of its constituents, only to become a placeholder position that serves up more party favors and VIP room experiences than the Wynn in Las Vegas. No sex in the champagne room right? WRONG, there’s sex and plenty of it, just ask Anthony Wiener. I wonder if the Board of Director’s at Georgetown Law have considered offering a course on the proper management of personal sex workers while in office. In 2015 3.2 Billion dollars were spent on lobbying in the United States, it is no question Big Business runs this country and the idea of the people’s vote is for all purposes dead and forgotten. No wonder the American people have a severe lack of trust for our government when 1/2 a billion dollars is spent marketing for an issue that is as mysterious as accepting the terms and conditions for an Apple iPhone upgrade. Ringing in at number two & three is Healthcare and Finance with combined lobbying dollars a little over a billion. At least we have the surety of knowing the subject matter of these issues, God forbid we actually understand where the money is being spent. Topping the list of spenders in 2015 is the ever growing US Chamber of Commerce writing a check for a little over 84 million dollars. On its face there is nothing wrong with lobbying for a cause you or your corporation feel strongly about, after all the constitution provides it’s liberty’s to all Americans including corporations. A liberty however becomes a hindrance when it controls so much, that any misjudgment or failure in leadership, not only effects the entity but the spider web of people surrounding it. Has the US Chamber become too big for its britches? Even worse has it become merely a vessel for corporations to funnel money free of market backlash or critique? Recently the knowledge of the Panama Papers sent shockwave's of discontentment to the American people. I like many others were not surprised. In the 80’s and 90’s if you were a millionaire it was just as chic to have an offshore bank account as it was to buy a $500 handkerchief from Bergdorf Goodman, it was just something you did. So the question remains if we imprison corporate executives for Tax evasion, then explain how funneling money through the US Chamber instead of writing the check yourself make’s sense? In summary our government, as glorified as it may seem, is starting to appear more and more everyday like the Monarchy we left over 300 years ago. Isn’t it ironic how history repeats itself? To this end GM was formed from the amalgamation of 13 car companies and 10 parts manufacturers, and by 1920 GM had absorbed Frigidaire and Fisher Body as the company expanded into all areas of the new economy that it was in part building. All cars were bought with cash and the Model T Ford was the market leader. To compete, William Durant introduced “installment sales”, and within a decade three-quarters of all new cars were bought on time plans. This shift from cash to installments radically changed America, ushering in the inflated credit economy that in part helped the US’s enormous economic boom in the following decades. GM’s history is also a catalogue of controversies. In World War I GM fueled the American military machine manufacturing everything from ammunition shells to bombers, but in the dire days of the Great Crash of '29 GM stock plummeted from $73 to $8. William Durant was humiliatingly ousted and lost a personal fortune of $100 million dollars. He is said to have written in his will that all he had to bequeath were the clothes he was wearing. With the rise of socialism and workers’ rights, GM faced growing union problems.. In a single strike in the 1930s over 100,000 United Auto Workers downed tools. Pierce DuPont (who invented financial forecasting and calculating rates of return on capital - now standard corporate practice), and who ousted William Durant; summoned a thousand National Guard and tensions exploded when police shot fourteen workers. From that time on the union movement gained unprecedented numbers and became a part of the American economy. 20th Century American Dream- Continued Like WWI and II, the Korean War was another golden goose for GM While the workers fought for their rights, GM leader, Alfred P. It had, in fact, snared contracts on which its bids were notably higher than those of the competition. This tendency would continue into the Vietnam War and would become the subject of a congressional investigation. By 1949 GM had become the world's largest corporation, but like America itself, it was about to get richer. In the 50’s Harlow Curtice (Time’s Man of the Year 1955) innovated large cars and chrome that became the style of the decade and GM became the first company to make 1 billion in profit in one year. Another bonanza for GM came with the largest public works project in history - President Eisenhower’s massive interstate highways construction, but controversy erupted when he appointed a committee headed by Lucius D. Clay, a GM board member. GM anticipated the program and bought Euclid Road Machinery Company in 1953, which produced more than half of all off highway dump trucks. By 1959 the government decided the buyout was in violation of the Clayton Antitrust Act, but mysteriously the government didn't press its case until 1967. An anti-trust suite was brought against GM, and was finally brought to trial, but only after the project had basically been completed. Hundreds of thousands of miles had been paved with GM asphalt, opening the West, penetrating the frozen north, and connecting the continent in a kind of concrete internet for cars. Like WWI and II, the Korean War was another golden goose for GM. President Eisenhower made GM President and CEO Charles Wilson the Secretary of Defense and General Motors became the largest commercial provider of military vehicles in history. Wilson famously said “what was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa”. Once again an antitrust suit was filed, and once again GM was found guilty of vested interest, but once again only after the fact. In the 1960s and 70s America rose to true superpower status and GM was along for the ride. The 1969 Apollo II astronauts were guided to man's first landing on the moon, and safely back to earth, using GM’s navigation systems. GM dominated car sales throughout the decades, remaining the world leader in revenue and market share, but as the 20th century closed, GM’s dominance waned. The 1980s saw the US auto industry undergo a massive restructuring, with thousands of lay-offs and economic turmoil. In the small town of Flint, Michigan, 40,000 jobs were lost. GM began to downsize, streamlining their product line, dismantling their trucks division, and reforming the management structure of Sloan. In the 1990’s the problems continued. The rise of the Japanese auto industry ate at GM’s market share. The Persian Gulf War (the last US military victory) drove gas prices up. GM’s product line of gas guzzling SUVs drove sales down and GM suffered its worst losses. After the 2001 September 11th attack on New York, the pension market collapsed and GM’s fortunes further diminished. After the 2007 financial crisis, GM finally collapsed and had to be bailed out by the government. The 20th century was a great journey for America, the road from a new industrial nation to becoming the world’s biggest superpower, and helping drive it through the decades, providing the road, the vehicle and often the drivers - was America’s most successful company, General Motors.

Fast food places are experimenting with kiosks designed to eliminate counter workers. Driverless vehicles will be all over the roads in five years or less, and the need for long-haul truck drivers will be put in jeopardy. Google any of this and watch the videos. You can buy a car, get a loan from a bank, and have items shipped to your door by drone. No human interaction necessary. “No human interaction necessary” would make a pretty ominous tagline for some commercial. Pretty soon we’re going to be asking the question “What good are we humans?” When we were all in high school, we all knew the choice for our future…white collar or blue collar? If a student went to college, got some kind of degree, then the student had their “bus ticket” (white collar) into corporate America. The students who didn’t usually learned some kind of trade (blue collar) through apprenticeship or trade school. Now both collars seem to be disappearing altogether. Community Bankers and Merchant Mariners are just two examples. I use these jobs as examples because I have experience in both. They are both honorable professions that are fading away because of technology. If you live in small town America, I don’t have to tell you community banks are closing. People get paid by direct deposit, and most pay their bills online. So they don’t even have the need to walk into a branch. Small business is good for a community bank if they have daily deposits and many transactions like a grocery store but that isn’t enough to sustain a community bank without the people who live in that community as customers. Even the “big dog” Bank of America announced recently that they were laying off 8,000 people. And they are one of several big banks in this country. The Merchant Maritime profession is dwindling as well. Currently, some companies are testing unmanned freighter and tanker ships to deliver goods all over the world. Think what it might look like in ten years, it could be completely unmanned. If not completely, then run by a greatly reduced crew. What about the tugboats that help dock these ships? Will they be completely automatic? Will automated crew boats take robots to automated oil platforms offshore? It is certainly possible if not probable. These are but two professions. Think of the film industry for a moment. If CGI gets better, then actors themselves will be put out of work. Why wouldn’t filmmakers create their own characters on a computer if it looks just as good as a real actor on film or video? If the actors are no longer needed then what about the steady-cam operators, editors, grips, and caterers? How many more professions will be affected in the same way? The labor participation rate in America is roughly 62%. That means 38% of the population is not working. Granted, retirees and children are included in this, but it still translates into roughly 94,000,000 Americans, not in the labor force. The GDP has been under 2% for almost eight years. Under these conditions and with the rise of autonomous machines it is reasonable to assume humans will render humanity obsolete because we are going to put ourselves out of the workforce. You could make the argument I’m some kind of Luddite, and I respect that point, however, if machines take over most jobs then we as humans must adapt and go into jobs such as coding. Well don’t you think if we can teach machines to do everything from serving our burgers, making credit decisions, and transporting goods across land, sea, and air, don’t you think we can teach machines to write their own code? If machines can write their own code isn’t that considered AI or at least on the very cusp of it? There is a quote from an old scientist in the early eighties movie Tron. “If machines start to do the thinking for us (humans) then where will we be?” Good question. Its business philosophy wrote the book of corporate structure and helped create the global capitalist system. It has been said that GM President Alfred P. He also developed the first modern assembly line and the first mass produced automobile. In 1908 Olds merged with William Durant’s Buick Motor Company and The General Motor Corporation was born. Sales rose and within 5 years the US produced 90% of the world's motor vehicles. Now if you take into account that the primary income earners in America, aged 44-64 turned out 34% in 2014 that means the fresh out of high school & college voters turned out just 4% less than the highest wage earners in America. Now even though there is no way to track the hotness of female voters it is apparent that ‘the dumb blonde’ label is beginning to disappear. Women are proclaiming their right to not only flaunt their physical attributes, whether god given, worked for or store bought, but are also displaying there intellectual prowess over men and their concern for the issues. In one area of the country, songbirds sing a melody that greets the day. In another area, the low buzz of the city begins below her window. She opens her eyes feeling refreshed. For a minute or two, she focuses on the comfort of her bed, but eventually, the drive for coffee gets her going. Everything is grand until she lights up the screen and connects to the external world. Damn. She’s been pummeled with images of modern-day expectations of beauty that only five percent of women on the planet are capable of achieving w i t h o u t Photoshop,1 and after P h o t o s h o p p i n g that number drops to zero. Most women know what happens next. She’s now in a fit trying to decide what to wear for the day and even if she feels somewhat attractive, she still notices that thing about her body she feels isn’t perfect and then… *sigh* … dwells on it. It kills her spirit; it kills her beautiful songbird, morning buzz, comfortable pillow, happy coffee, lovely morning, spirit. This damaging objectification has to stop. Only four percent of women in America think they’re beautiful. Eighty percent of college women report that their parents or siblings or both told them negative things about their body. Women with low self- esteem tend to stay in abusive relationships; they’re less likely to start their own businesses, and they earn less than people who are confident.2 And what if they are single and want a relationship? 1 2 “Everything is grand until she lights up thescreen and connects to theexter- nalworld”

NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 OBJECTIFICATION- CONTINUED Kim, a woman who signed up on a popular dating site in hopes of finding a friend or possibly something more, described what she experienced there as, “absolutely the most humiliating experience of my life.” Some men thought it was OK to c o m m e n t negatively on her body, and some thought it was perfectly acceptable to ask her what size pants she wore before they went any further. What Kim saw and internalized was a trend. S o m e p e o p l e seemed to be ordering up the perfect date the way they would order a hamburger for lunch: hold the pickles, extra mayo please-- and God forbid she wears a size twelve. (For the record, there is beauty at any size). Those who missed out on Kim lost a great opportunity. She is now happily married to someone who understands her beauty better than anyone. The reality is, people want to be attractive, and they want to feel better about themselves. So what can they do to improve their lives? The answer is: they can choose to be happy. I’m not off my rocker. Happiness can be a choice, even in this tough world. Let me explain. Traditionally, people set goals that they think will bring happiness. Is this you? “Once I get promoted, I will be happy. When I find that new relationship I will be happy. I will be happy when I lose ten, twenty, thirty pounds.” The new science of Positive Psychology says otherwise. The examples above have you stuck because happiness is not now, but always on the other side of a goal. And once you get there, there is always a new goal. You find a new job, and now you need a promotion to be happy. You lose ten pounds then (surprise!) you discover the new imperfections with your body. There is no resting point. You never really get there. This is called the hedonic treadmill. The happiness generated is momentary, and you go back to the same default level of unhappiness. The reality is, what happens in the external world predicts only ten percent of our happiness. First we need to decide to be happy. Then we can take the steps that will change our brains accordingly. This article will give you the formula for synthesizing happiness. What does synthesizing happiness mean? According to Psychologist Dan Gilbert, “Natural happiness is what we get when we get what we want, and synthetic happiness is what we make when we don’t get what we want.

" I am a novelist, a screenwriter, a short story author, and a teacher. “Synthesized happiness is every bit as real and as enduring as the kind of happiness we get when we get what we were aiming for.” It is inevitable that some will claim synthetic happiness isn’t as good as natural happiness. For those people, here is why it’s important: just like natural happiness, synthetic happiness floods the brain with a chemical called dopamine. According to Positive Psychologist, Shawn Achor, “Dopamine has two functions. It makes us happier by flooding positivity into our brains and it turns on all of the learning centers in our brains, allowing us to adapt to the world in a different way.” This is huge! What this means is that our brains perform better when we are happy. Our creativity, intelligence, and energy levels all rise and we perform significantly better at work and at home. We become more confident, and confidence is attractive. There is a ripple effect that takes place. When we’re happy, we bring more happiness to those around us. We know that we want to be happy, the question is, where do we start? TURN THE PAGE FOR THE FORMULA The most important takeaway from this is to stop berating yourself. Stop damning your beautiful body. We want to start a revolution against objectification. We want to stop being admired for our form without content. And women, we must stop objectifying men, and ourselves too. Remember, global change starts with small changes. Be pro-active. Sound your voice. Stay strong. We can’t change overnight the beauty standard that was created by an industry worth over a billion dollars. What we can change is our internal happiness and our confidence. This can have a lasting impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. If enough women, and men, decide to take these steps, just imagine the changes we can make for the next generation and for the generation after that. Don’t put off changing your life waiting for a giant change in the world. Happiness starts now. It starts within you. This is the happiness revolution.

Although it has become a trend to succumb to the adverse effects that these sites can have on our quality of life; it is an underrated, powerful tool that has the potential to change our social media obsessed society for the better. This past year was the first time that the issue of social media caught my attention. While walking to class one day, I overheard a conversation between two girls who were a few feet in front of me. One girl was criticizing herself and saying that she was “fat” (which she wasn’t), while the other was exclaiming how much she wished she had the glamorous life of a famous Instagram model whose page they came across. After I had heard the words “hashtag goals,” I grew slightly frustrated because there are so many other things that are much more worthy of our attention. As a contemporary society, we tend to pay more attention to what we don’t have, what we want, and typically what is going wrong. But what if we started to focus on the positive? sulking, Instagram mode

It provides us with an infinite amount of opportunities to spread the word about amazing things that are happening around us. According to digitaltrends.com, the average American spends an alarming 4.7 hours on a cellular device per day. If you take into consideration that most people are only awake for 15 hours, it becomes strikingly apparent that most of us dedicate one-third of our life to looking at a screen. 4.7 hours that are primarily used to read tweets, Facebook articles, and Instagram captions. It would be unrealistic to think that we could just drop these sites altogether and call it a day, so that’s not what I’m suggesting. What I am suggesting is that we stop focusing on the pessimistic nature of something that isn't going away anytime soon. If the time we spent on networking sites were spent on presenting positivity rather than mindlessly scrolling, we could start a chain reaction of an active and commendable movement of societal good. Think about it. If, while scrolling through our Instagram or Facebook feeds, we came across more pictures of people supporting a cause they felt passionately about, we would all become more inspired to do the same. We are a mixed culture of some of the most creative, inventive, and compassionate people than ever before, and its time to use our available resources to our advantage. We live in the land of the PEOPLE, meaning, that we have all the capabilities to improve our social surroundings. No matter who you are or where you come from you have a gift and a voice, so why not use it? There are a crazy amount of pages that are spreading awareness of issues that we need to be giving attention; we just aren’t bringing them to light. A community of networkers who utilize social sites for a purpose will change the game. Continuing to isolate our perspectives to what we wish we had rather than making a positive impact in even one person's life will ultimately make us more obsessed with materialism and worldly desires; aka “a cycle of evolving discontentment”. el stalkers

I felt I had found my voice as an artist in being able to create art for the sake of my own personal release. It was shortly after I started creating art in my own style and had my own message in each piece, that my teacher opened up and complimented my painting. He even went as far to bring the graduate classes in to see what I was doing. I felt like I had achieved something great and wanted to keep doing it. A common theme I try to explore within my fine art is the paradox between what is good in the world mixed with the hardships and pain in life, and the beauty in the balance between the two extremes. Good cannot exist without evil and vice versa. You have to know and experience some pain, to fully appreciate and experience happiness. Everything has a balance in life, and I try to explore the beauty in this balance within my work. I am also greatly influenced by the fashion designer Alexander McQueen who explores a similar concept. When feeling uninspired I often look through his big book on fashion I have in my studio. His soft and feminine clothes, mixed with skulls or splat- ters of red signifying blood, play with the same balance while looking beautiful when worn on his models. JS Artist of old vs the artist of today, what is changing in the world of fine art, if anything? Ed I feel like technology has really changed the art world in the last twenty years or so and continues to do so. The term “mixed media” has become widely used to encom- pass lots of various mediums including work created digitally mixed with traditional art meth- ods like painting or drawing. For example, a painting can now be uploaded digitally and changed by incorporating it in digital art. The once traditional and often rigid rules about what art was defined as, seems to have faded in today’s art world. New art forms are being recognized. Graffiti art is now re- spected as a fine art form where in the past it was primarily viewed in a negative light for defacing public property. Often times now property owners are paying the artists for graffiti to be added to their walls and this art form is being recognized for it’s unique skill. Aside from blossoming new art forms, artists today can do things today that were not possible before with marketing their artwork. Technol- ogy has also really changed the way we display our art as well. “Le Couer de Cheval” or Heart of the Horse was displayed in downtown Dallas.

Recently Dana Macleandon, consular to the Camden Mafia and the Terrorist Mouthpiece, published his theory on understanding the dynamics of women called, ‘The Hot Crazy Matrix’. This study outlined the correlation between a woman’s good looks and her craziness. I have been able to meet people and show them my work from all over the world, make sales, and gain contact with galleries thanks to social media. It eliminates the middleman and allows you to have instant contact with whom you want to speak with. JS Favorite place to paint? ED My favorite place to paint is in my studio. I like to have things around me that inspire me, my music on, and my cat lounging on the windowsill next to me. I like to be alone in my thoughts, and feel free to let my mind roam. JS Given the chance, with unlimited resources & time what type of artwork do you dream of producing? ED I would like to continue to explore unique ideas for paintings and perhaps explore some new ave- nues. I stay busy with commission orders- both Pet Pawtraits and my “fine art” commissions, which is great, but often I don’t have time to create new ideas for fresh bodies of work. If time and resources were not an issue, I think I would want to explore some different mediums. I once created a life-sized horse sculpture that was on display in downtown Lexing- ton, KY and later 1) purchased by a horse farm to go on their property. I created a fiberglass body of a thoroughbred racehorse completely covered in found metal objects, with a metal horse heart hanging from a cut-out in the center of the horse. The sculpture called “Le Couer de Cheval” (meaning “Heart of the Horse”) explored the idea of a horse being both a “money making machine” in the horseracing industry, while also being an animal with emotions and feelings. The whole process from finding the material to use, working in a much larger scale than I was used to, and applying new tools and addressing new problems along the way in creating the piece was a fun challenge. Aside from a few sculpture classes I took in college, working in 3-D was a completely new concept for me. I would love to do some more sculptural work, and am hoping to one day create a life sized polar bear created in a similar way. JS How long have you been painting professionally ED I’ve been painting professionally for about 12 years. After I graduated from college I had a friend ask if I could paint a painting of her dog and wanted to pay me to do so. Instead of painting a traditional realistic painting of her dog, I used my expressionis- tic style and attempted to capture the dog’s personal- ity. She was thrilled with the outcome and told her friends, and by word of mouth alone I received dozens of orders for pet paintings. I’ve continued doing pet paintings ever since, and created a side business called “Edryden Pawtraits” with a separate website and business concept than my fine art. I donate 10% to an animal shelter of the client’s choice and have had orders all over the United States, and even an order as far as Germany! I have never been great at it, and when working for yourself, every minute matters. Currently, my studio is at home and it is tempting to do everything else that needs to be done around the house (workout, laundry, cleaning, walking the dog, etc.) before getting to my studio. Thus running out of quality painting time. JS What piece of your work are you most proud of? ED I am most proud of a piece I did about 2 years ago called “Pre- cious Evils of Time”. Creating that painting was a turning point for me as an artist. I was working 2 jobs at the time, stuck in a rut financially, and wanting to give up on my art career altogether. I had one large canvas left and decided to just start painting whatever I was feeling on it. The painting explores the idea of time being evil, as it quickly passes by taking years and lives with it. It is also about a young woman’s motherly clock alerting her that life is passing her by. The desper- ation I was feeling due to several things going on in life personally, were brought to existence on my canvas. I felt naked showing the inside 1) of my heart to everyone who saw it. Despite my fears, I entered it in a contest at Neiman Marcus where I worked downtown, and it ended up winning an award and hung in the Main Street window for a month. Short- ly after it sold and re energized my passion for making art. JS Do you believe that art is still relevant with millennial's? What advice do you have for millennial's who want to learn more about fine art? ED Art is very relevant with millennial's. I feel like no matter what age you are or what decade you are born in, art will always be a way of selfexpress- ion. Art can be seen everywhere from cell phone designs, to dance moves, to large murals on build- ings. The definition of art evolves and changes just like the culture we live in. For those who want to learn more about art, I always suggest starting with the founda- tions. Art galleries and museums are great places to see art and the evolution of art into what it has become today. JS What is your favorite food? ED My favorite food is probably pizza. Or chocolate chip pancakes. I like both, but try not to have either very often. JS How would you describe the art scene in Dallas? ED The art scene is definitely thriving in Dallas. Art is growing, new galleries and art districts are opening, and I feel like it is possible in Dallas to be successful as an artist if you work hard. People here are very open minded and creative, and I feel that there is a wide audience to connect to. I have really enjoyed watching the city grow in this area over the years, and I think it will continue to do so. JS Where are you from? ED I am from Dallas. I’ve lived in a lot of different places since leaving for college in 2000: from Tucson, AZ, to Pullman, WA, to Lexington, KY, to Boston, MA, and now back home to Dallas. JS Favorite Color? ED Red- the color of passion. Something about that color jumps out and is so bright and alive, but can also represent death. I like that it can symbolize both extremes and still be beautiful at the same time. JS One word to describe your artwork? ED Paradox

Her fine art has been featured in numerous gallerys across the United States and in 2014 she was commisioned as lead artist for a Polo Club Magazine in Lexington, Kentucky. JS E, what first inspired you to become an artist? ED I began doing art at a very young age. I would go stay with my grandparents in Lubbock and there wasn’t much to do there, but my grandmother always had an unlimited supply of art supplies for my sister and I to play with. I would spend hours in her “bird room” drawing and painting with watercolors and tempera paint. I used to love how excited she would get whenever I would give her whatever it was that I was making. My Nana would sing my praises and hang it up for all to see. She still has several of these early scribbling's up in her house today. From the joy that my art generated in my Nana, to the dark and mysterious paintings I often did in college, I realized I could communicate with people through my art- I could make them feel happy or sad when viewing my work. I felt that I could say things that I would never be able to say with words alone. Each piece is an experiment to create a feeling or a thought within the viewer, to make them feel the desired message I want to express. JS Who is your biggest influence in regards to painting? ED My college art professor, Mr., R. I used to get frustrated in my first painting classes in college at Texas Woman’s University. My professor would never compliment students on their work. Our class was small and art for the most part had been the one subject that came easy to me. I would do all of the assignments to the best of my ability, and to my knowledge, had done a good job- yet he never said a word about my (or anyone’s) work. He used to say to the class “The work (meaning the art) is damage!” He wanted us to take out our feeling and emotion on the canvas. Frustrated with the painting class and my professor, the concept clicked about releasing my emotion into the work. After this understanding, I was addicted to painting.

However, for a freelancer, it is the most deafening (and terrifying) noise one can experience. The absence of your ringtone, text tone, or email notification tone going off for a lengthy period of time segues into an almost five stages of grief like state for a freelancer. First, there is denial. Your phone must be broken. Overnight, without you knowing, your home had a cement shell constructed around it, preventing you from getting a signal. You think you recall reading something somewhere (Facebook maybe?) about a bug in your model phone causing it not to receive phone calls or texts. Your Internet service provider has really dropped the ball this time. You cannot seem to receive important emails from potential clients, yet somehow, these emails about switching your car insurance keep trickling in (can it really save me 15% in just 15 minutes?). Whatever the technological shortcoming that has put a curse upon your household may be, it is making you quite… Angry. Stage two. Clearly, these people are idiots who do not realize how good you are and how much they need you. How dare they blow you off and treat you like this? You feel like a lover scorned. Why won’t they return your call? You have been cheated on you know it. They are seeing another creative. I bet they are younger, better looking, with a bigger....camera than you. All the beautiful work you have done together means nothing. They faked every firm handshake and smile. Perhaps you contemplate confronting them, publicly or on social media. Or maybe slash their dolly wheels and spray-paint "HACK" across their slate. But no, that is not you. So what can you do to salvage the relationship? What can you do to get them to look at you with that same creative passion they used to? Hello, bargaining. Stage three. Maybe you are charging them too much? Delivering too little? Maybe if you showed up 30 minutes before call time instead of 15?

55. NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 You knew you should have gone with the 85mm lens instead of the 50mm, they said they wanted a choker, not a medium shot. How could you have been so foolish? You can change, you promise. It will be different this time. If they just told you what they wanted, you would do it. Don't leave. It is too late. The silence has set in and taken hold of you. There is nothing wrong with your phone or Internet. They are not “cheating” on you. They have all left you. You blew it. You are so... Depressed. Stage four. Your parents were right; you are not Spielberg. Your exes were right; you are delusional. Your cat was right; the dead bird in your shoe was a thoughtful gift. Whatever the scenario; you are wrong. Whether you went to film school, design school, or the school of hard knocks, the phrase "would you like fries with that?" is spoken with the same tone of failure. What were you thinking? You weren't. You were blinded by the mirage of success and financial freedom. By red carpets and black ties. By inklings of being self-made and self-sufficient. Whatever you were thinking; you were wrong. There is nothing you can do now but... Accept it. Stage five. Accept the security of the nine to five. Accept the steady paychecks with their automatically deducted taxes and social security. Accept that you tried and failed. It is okay; you do not need the- Ding. "Are you available for a project?" You reply "yes" to the soundtrack of a church choir singing "Hallelujah." You are back. This was a good career choice. All is forgiven, and all the sins of the client world have been absolved. You are in demand and wanted. The phone calls and emails start coming in. It feels so good. Until the next time the mailbox is empty and the phone does not ring and the vicious cycle, the rinse and repeat of disdain, laps your ego. This is the world of freelance. This is all that you love and all that you hate in summation. If that ding were not a fix, you would not be an addict like the rest of us. For some artists, drugs are a creative lubricant. For us, the creation of art is a life lubricant. It helps us get through the hard times. Withdrawal from it makes us dissident and distant, sluggish and solemn. We do not need an intervention; we need inspiration. So here we are, members of “Freelancers Anonymous”, seeking validation and compensation to create the art that we love. We meet every day in all corners of the world to be each other’s sponsors, supporters, and friends. We owe it to one another to drown out the silence of our grieving colleagues when it sets in. We do this by writing messages on each other’s walls, we tweet them, we “like” what they do and say

56. Some of us may have never met in the flesh, but we are bonded by this life choice, for better or worse. It is a union of hope, hope for others to succeed, hope for ourselves when we see others succeed, and hope that our time doing what we love resembles more of a marathon than a sprint. We will all experience the silence at one time or another. We will all have empty mailboxes and phones that do not ring. It is what we do for our fellow freelancer that helps them through the stages. We need to be more of a collective than a competition, more of a fraternity than a fight club, which, according to the first and second rules, we do not talk about. I write this from a place of first-hand knowledge. The wound of the silence and the five stages is still very fresh and open. More so, the wounds of the silence are many. Scars and war wounds collected over 14 years. It won’t just happen once; you need to understand and prepare yourself for that. I, myself, contemplated throwing in the towel and accepting defeat during this most recent bout with of silence. Besides my biggest supporter and confidant, my wife Tiffani, it was my closest network of friends and colleagues, the set veterans who had been there and the young hopefuls who saw inspiration for themselves in my trials and tribulations, that helped get me through to that next ding, that next ring, that next gig. You take a sip. “Ugh! This beer tastes like piss!” after which your friends proclaim, “What do you expect? Adding to the complexity of YGWYPF is the notion that people will want something simply because it costs more. A “Veblen good,” named after Economist Thorstein Veblen, refers to luxury goods like cars, designer clothes, and pricey wines that are in demand because they are expensive. In fact, a recent survey conducted in the UK determined that people were more likely to say a certain wine tasted better because it was pricier! In the meantime, Danish website, runrepeat.com, found that in many cases, the 10 most expensive running shoes were rated over 8% lower than the 10 cheapest running shoes. Then there’s Hollywood. Tinsel town is notorious for abusing YGWYPF. The thought process is something like “The higher the budget and the more money that is thrown at a pic, the more likely the film will do well at the box office and therefore, the better the film must be, right? Nowhere can we see this misappropriation in marketing more abused than in big- budget Hollywood films. Take for example, Disney – arguably a company that represents quintessential Hollywood in terms of an influence and authority with regard to storytelling. The Lone Ranger was an epic adventure s t a r r i n g one of the b i g g e s t (and most expensive) s t a r s around – J o h n n y D e p p . Here we have an action film, long considered the best-bet for blockbuster success, with a bona-fide star, that brings a necessity to get butts in the theater. This film cost $300,000,000. No small change by any account and yet this film earned a terrible score of 31 out of 100 by Rotten Tomatoes, one of the most reliable websites that aggregates reviews to determine how well a film is received. The film made around $89,000,000 – an epic flop. Disney’s John Carter cost around $307,000,000 – one of the most expensive films in history, only to earn a horrendous 14 out of 100 and o n l y $180,000,000. David Denby of The New Y o r k e r described it as “a mess” and it appears that no matter how much money was thrown at this project, it was by all critical accounts a colossal failure. Way at the other end of the spectrum are the low-budget indies. Hollywood often invokes the reverse of the Veblen theory with these little guys - independent films have tiny budgets – how good can they be? Irish indie flick, Once, was made for only $150,000 (produced for a song as they say) before going on to win the 2008 Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film, an Oscar for Best Original Song and two Grammy nominations for the soundtrack. The film garnered a 97 rating and earned upwards of $19 million – a return of over 6,000%. The Blair Witch Project had only $60,000 and went on to earn an 86 rating and over $248 million – a frighteningly impressive 20,000% return! And one of the most profitable movies of all-time had one of the lowest budgets of all-time. Armed with only $15,000, the creators behind Paranormal Activity pulled in a worldwide gross of almost $197 million, an otherworldly return of over 655,000% that earned a respectable 83 critical rating. What is going on here? Perhaps it is a studio mentality – only make films that are “guaranteed sellable” and throw as much money at it as possible to make it happen. Or maybe it’s the notion of making a film appeal to all audiences. Famed screenwriter Robert McKee called writers of these films “hacks” – those who write for the market instead of from the soul. Hollywood wasn’t always like this - American Graffiti was made for $777,000, earned a 95% rating and scooped up over $140 million – a formidable 9,000% return and often thought of as breaking open the newly discovered “teen film” market. Long on the list of top screenplays of all-time, Rocky had a budget of only $1 million before snagging a 93 rating and $225 million, filling the studio’s pocket with an 11,000% return. Now that millions of cheap videos are being uploaded on a daily basis, stealing tens of millions of eyeballs, Hollywood may now finally have to confront the limitations of YGWYPF. The very notion that dollar signs equal success is being tossed out the window faster than the scripts on any executive’s desk. Perhaps the question Hollywood needs to ask itself is will anyone get what you are paying for? You get what you pay for....

61. NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 The 90’s brought us Tarantino, Linklater and Smith. “Rebels with dialogue”. But gone are the days of a convenience store slacker or video-store movie geek getting together with their buddies, firing out rapid-fire pop culture references and taking Sundance by storm. Despite technology making it cheaper and easier for wanna-be auteurs (I thesaurused that one) to create the next wave of magic it seems we are still turning to the original Tarantinos of the world to get our fix. Maybe it’s me. As I get older and become more of the old “in my day” curmudgeon, I have lost the love of the over the top action film. he summer blockbuster season is in full swing and once again we are met with an excess of sequels, remakes, reboots, and superhero franchises that are so intertwined I’m not sure even Marvel or DC knows what universe their characters are in anymore. I’m expecting the Flash to challenge Quicksilver to a foot race to the death at this point. I used to get pumped up for summer films. Not so much anymore. I’ve had my fill of Michael Bay explosion orgies. (Don’t get me wrong; I’d love to work on a film with a $200 million budget. I’d cater the hell out of that shit.) But for $200 million can’t we do better? Out of this curr ent crop of emotionless and CGI filled non sense, where are the mid-level bud geted, well-written, well- acted movies that actually have a well-thought out story? Well, I don’t know. We are long overdue for the next generation of cutting edge, take-no-prisoners directors and writers that don’t just throw a spandex clad, A-List star in front of a green screen and yell action. The 70’s brought us such game changing films like Taxi- Driver, Chinatown and The Deer Hunter, films that gave the finger to the establishment. Even films like the original Star Wars and Rocky, which went on to become big blockbuster franchises, have that independent spirit and grittiness. The original Die Hard is the perfect underdog beats the odds story, with Bruce Willis showing vulnerability and actually even some fear and uncertainty. Also with, A Good Day To Die Hard, John McClane had become such a cartoon superhero you might as well have given him a cape and some laser eyes. But I doubt it’s me, because that would mean it’s my fault. And if the millennials have taught me anything, it is I’m the victim here. Damn you, big studios. My fear is that the” good old days” are gone forever. With more and more businessmen and accountants (“the suits” as us artistic types like to call them) running the studios and no truly creative minds making the decisions, the movie industry is ready to suffer the same fate as the music industry. Cookie-cutter, low- talent filmmakers putting their spin on an existing franchise. “Beiber blockbusters anyone?” With many more outlets popping up by the day, like Netflix, Amazon & iTunes, the onus is on the new filmmakers to up their game and stand out from an overcrowded field. Start a new revolution. Buy in if you can because everybody streams. Get your show when you want it on your own time. “It’s the new crack cocaine for the fading cable age” and we all know what it’s about. As I write this article my fiancé’ sits in our bedroom binging on “Orange is the New Black”. Ah, how we consumers love our convenience. This also means something else, it is the dawning of a new age for the indie filmmaker. What does streaming have to do with making an indie film? Everything. Here’s what I learned when I made my first feature for under $5K. First off, forget crowd funding if you’re starting from scratch. Crowd funding works when you have half the money in place before you even launch your “please give me money” page. The truth is no one gives a damn about your film but you. You can hang up the “angel investor” too. Do you know of anyone (expecting a return) going to invest in an indie film in this economy? There are several key people needed to pull off a cheap indie feature. They are the script/writer, DP, Editor, Sound Editor, and the Score Guy. (The score guy will be the largest expense and I will explain later.) Here is the breakdown. Script: Few locations and characters. You can’t have a scene with fifty extras and not pay them unless you’re the kind of person that can talk the birds down from the trees. Keep it simple. 65. in the profits of the film. Give them all a good share. 10% or more on all downloads. It will motivate them. Spend lots of time on pre- production with your DP right by your side. Take your time on this because pre- production is the most important aspect of filmmaking. Set up every shot with the DP beforehand and set a schedule that is reasonable to stick to during filming days. Feed your cast and crew. Score Guy: The cost on this is $1200 to $1500 (for a reasonable one) and you don’t want to skimp out on it. Use a pro. The producers of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho said the film sucked without the score. Would Jaws be any good without the score? Yes, but not as. The score makes the film. So if you pull all of this together and it all comes to fruition you have something you didn’t have before…and that’s a product. It’s a “B” movie product, but a product all the same. And every product has a place especially in streaming. Amazon, for example, will offer the filmmaker 50% of all downloads. So if they rent your “B” movie for five bucks you get two fifty. Doesn’t seem like much but it adds up quick if 50,000 people rent your film. How many millions of people have Amazon Fire TV? 50,000 is not an unreasonable number with good promotion on social media. Don’t forget about Netflix, Roku, and the other up and coming content distributors. They are coming on strong and are all hungry for content. It is the dawning of the new age for the indie filmmaker. films, and even porn fit the bill. Don’t worry about paying the actors either (except for porn). There are many good actors that will work for free usually to add to their personal reel or to help secure representation from an agent. All you have to do is put out a casting call through www.imdb.com or other casting website and you’ll be surprised how many people will show up. DP, Video Editor, and Sound Editor: You have to find someone to shoot the film, edit it, and get the sound right. If you can find someone that can handle all three tasks then you have hit the trifecta but chances are you won’t. It’s usually three different people. This is the most difficult thing to accomplish and there’s two ways to do it. One way is to troll the local film school in your area. There are plenty of college kids looking for a project to work on. It makes them more valuable when they graduate because they gain actual experience. The other way is to check out www.stage32.com. It is the Facebook for indie filmmakers and you can find your key people there. Remember you have to pay the DP, Editor, and Sound Editor (provided they provide the equipment) but you can pay them on a deferred agreement. It means they share

The young man had been having sex dreams, non-stop, for about two weeks. The noise appeared to take the form of a horrible pop-electronic song being blasted by the next-door neighbors. He wanted to escape this violating reality and go back to the warm, center of his horny dreams. But the music was too loud and the dream was blurry to the point of disappearance. There was no escaping reality. The young man got up from his bed and into his oversized slippers. He grabbed the first shirt he got his hands on, a dirty shirt from the night before, a shirt that reeked of cigarettes and Mexican food. Before leaving his apartment he grabbed a glass of water. Water’s taste is so empty, he thought. Why would God choose to create something so necessary to human life and then give it such a boring flavor? It was too early to think of crazy shit like this yet the young man was used to having ridiculous thoughts at all hours of the day. He finished his water and stepped outside, ready to confront his neighbor. He had no idea how this interaction would go down but it was too early to care. He knocked once and the door opened. One knock was all it took. The door was opened by a European looking fellow with blonde hair, a shiny goatee and a fedora. Who wears a fedora while inside their own place? Who wears a fedora at all, in any situation? This guy. “Hello there, friend. Is something wrong?” he said, with a smile so wide it was difficult to believe it was real. “Yeah, sorry to bother you, it’s just that it’s pretty early and the music is way too loud, do you mind turning it down a bit?” The neighbor stared right into the young man’s eyes for about thirty seconds and just as he opened his mouth to give a response, the sound of a loud blender muffled made it impossible for the young man to hear anything at all.. “I’m sorry, what was that?” the young man asked. The tall European spoke louder but was interrupted once again by the sound of a blender. The young man peered inside the apartment and realized that a beautiful, blonde woman, who was wearing absolutely nothing, was using the blender. She was the most beautiful woman the young man had ever seen and she seemed to be making a frozen smoothie out of delicious, exotic fruits. “I’m sorry,” said the European man. My wife likes to make smoothies while listening to hardcore European techno, it has always been our morning routine.” The beautiful woman looked over at her husband and exclaimed, “The juice is ready! Who wants juice?” The European man got visible excited. “I do, Annika, but we must keep the music down, for we are disturbing our nice, American neighbor.” The woman turned red in the face, she was truly ashamed of her behavior. “I am so sorry!” she said. She turned the music down and poured some of her fruity elixir from the blender into a glass cup. “Please have some juice, it is a family recipe that you will surely enjoy.” She walked over, carefully holding the glass and before the young man could react, she forcefully poured it right into his mouth. The woman looked at the drop and in an attempt to save it, she quickly reached towards it with open eyes and used her precious, red lips to suck it right from the young man’s mouth. “It’s good, isn’t it? Too good to let it go to waste,” she said. The young man was so aroused and confused that he could not speak. The woman then proceeded to grab the blender and pour the sweet juice all over her naked body. “Your turn” she said, “lick it all off!” The young man could not believe what he was witnessing. He turned to face the woman’s husband and he gave the young man a look of severe reassurance. “Do it, boy, we must not waste the juice.” “We must not waste the juice”, the boy repeated softly. He began to approach the woman and he opened his mouth with great anticipation. He was ready to taste her sweet, perfect body. He slowly grew closer and closer to her glistening skin. The woman looked right into his eyes and so did he. His tongue was now inches away from her body when suddenly the sound of electronic music grew intensely loud. He was so distracted and annoyed. The music filled the entire room. His head began to hurt and his vision grew blurry. The woman started to disappear and so did everything else around him. “Fuck! The juice!” he yelled and as soon as he opened his eyes, he found himself sweating and in bed, with nothing but the sound of his neighbor’s music shaking the bedroom wall. The music reminded him that there is no escape from reality, and reality fucking sucks. Disappointed, the young man got up from his bed and into his oversized slippers. He grabbed the first shirt he got his hands on, a dirty shirt from the night before, a shirt that reeked of cigarettes and Mexican food. The End.

NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 The landscape for independent filmmaking has changed, yet one thing remains the same and will always remain the same throughout time: independent filmmaking requires guts. More affordable digital cameras, non-linear editing systems, compact studio lights, portable sound equipment, and camera phones have given rise to independent filmmakers and allowed them to own complete control over their content, outside of the studio system, free of corporate interruptions and creative restrictions. “Anybody can be a filmmaker during this day and age”, that’s what the naive say to those aspiring to make films. However, those people are oblivious to the most essential ingredient needed to creating an independent film: guts. Nobody ever achieved their goals by sitting idle and waiting for an opportunity to present itself. Filmmaking is about “gutting up” and developing your ideas so that they become a reality. It’s so much easier to escape into a normal way of life, with a comfortable job, a stable monthly income and an idyllic home in suburbia with a beautiful wife and children. Being an independent filmmaker is a full time job that pays very little, sometimes nothing at all. One must prepare themselves for the harsh reality of turbulent ups and downs, an over-abundance of work and then no work at all. Not to mention a meager paycheck, maybe, if your film performs successfully and attains an audience. Independent filmmaking is a lifestyle, and it’s totally insane. World War II gave rise to smaller hand-held 16 mm film cameras that could be purchased and owned by the general population. This sparked a movement outside of the studio system led by avant- garde filmmakers. These low budget, black and white films were experimental and considered works of art, rather than pieces of entertainment. The independent movement cascaded into the counter culture of the 1960’s when the studio’s audience drifted away from massive musical pro- ductions in Technicolor towards smaller films based in reality and told from the outsider’s perspective. Then came the filmmakers of the 70’s and 80’s. This independent genre which incorporated science-fiction and fantasy with low budget filmmaking techniques. This eventually spawned the generation “X” filmmakers of the mundane about drifters and misfits in the 1990’s. All of these filmmakers from generations past had one thing in common: an unrelenting urge to pursue their art and to showcase their uncompromising and honest vision to the world without the help of a major studio. NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM | AUGUST 2016 In 2015, audiences witnessed the release of , an independently financed film shot on a modified Apple iPhone. is about a working girl who tears through Hollywood leaving behind a path of chaos and destruction while searching for the pimp who broke her heart. The story is definitely not blockbuster material, as it was scheduled for release in theaters during the summer months, however through a successful run at film festivals across the country it attracted an audience and ultimately found distribution. The filmmakers behind , Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch, had no idea of the film’s final outcome before pursuing their project (after all no film can ever be predicted as a financial success before its release). They most certainly were not trying to appeal to mainstream audiences by creating a story centered on a controversial topic like prostitution and transgender relationships. Regardless of the fact this topic, one that both the United States and rest of The #1 Ingredient- Continued “Sacrifices have to be made and there can be no shortage of guts” the world frowns upon, Baker and Bergoch “gutted up”, went forward and broke new ground in filmmaking by creating a feature film made on a camera phone. Its guts that pushes a person to create, to want to tell a story that is outside of the norm and present radical ideas to the rest of the world. An independent filmmaker can own the most expensive and state-of-the-art camera and equipment, yet achieve nothing if they never step outside their front door and explore worlds that are new and unique. AUGUST 2016 | NAKEDTRUTHMAGAZINE.COM maker that it’s easier to make films during this modern era of advanced technology and those filmmakers, at least the ones that have actually tried to produce and direct a project, will simply shake their head in silent disagreement. It’s never easy to make a film. It’s a whole lifestyle that requires embracing. Sacrifices have to be made and there can be no shortage of guts. Independent filmmakers have more outlets available to them through the internet and VOD (Video -OnDem- and), but it still does not bring forth a stable lifestyle. Aspiring independent filmmakers are warned about this harsh reality in film school and mentors alike. However some let arrogance and conceit for great- ness prevent them from understanding the guts required to be a filmmaker on your own and outside of the system.
