Sean Astin will always be remembered for
his heroic portrayal of Frodo Baggins’ best
friend, Samwise Gamgee in Peter
Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
Earlier on in his career, he starred in other
hits such as “The Goonies” and “Toy
Soldiers.” But there was one gem of a film
back in 1993 where he portrayed a real-
life hero by the name of Daniel “Rudy”
Ruettiger. And it was probably the most
inspiring movie you’ll ever see.

“Rudy” was directed by David Anspaugh
and was released in 1993. It tells the story
of a young boy who always dreamed of
playing football for the University of Notre
Dame. The problem, though, was he was
not as physically gifted as the football
program would require. Rudy was a short
fellow, and probably weaker than the
rest. But he had more heart than probably
anyone else in the state of Indiana.
The story takes us through Rudy’s
countless heartbreaks, from the death of
his best friend to his girlfriend’s affair and
eventual marriage to his brother to the
many rejections he suffered before finally
getting in Notre Dame. The whole film
works as an exposition on perseverance
and the one shining moment that makes
everything well worth it.
Spoiler alert: He wins.
Also, don’t forget to have tissues with
you. You’ll be catching all the feels at the
end.
