A true Fighting Irish: Lou Holtz’s successful
decade

Unlike his predecessor, Gerry Faust, Lou Holtz had an amazing knack for
motivating his troops. He was also one heck of a disciplinarian. His players still
remember the rst time he gathered them round in 1986, when he demanded
that they sit up straight and look him dead in the eye when he spoke.

It was this discipline and motivation that Holtz bestowed on the Irish that
powered the team through the ‘80s. In 1988, Holtz led Notre Dame to a perfect

10-0 record before meeting top-seeded USC, but not without controversy at
rst. Before the big game in Los Angeles, Holtz suspended Ricky Watters and
Tony Brooks, both stars on the team, for disciplinary reasons. It didn’t matter
as Notre Dame defeated USC and Holtz won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award,
being named national coach of the year of the 1988 season.
In 1988, the Notre Dame nished 12-0 and it would be their nal undefeated
season. That following year, the team and Holtz visited the White House and
were welcomed by President Ronald Reagan.
The 1989 season saw Notre Dame nishing with another stellar record (12-1),
losing only to Miami. They also won the Orange Bowl that year, defeating top-
ranked Colorado, and capping o Holtz’s most successful decade as a college
football coach.

Tom Colton here, of Irish descent and now a student at the University of Notre
Dame. It almost goes without saying that I’m a huge fan of Fighting Irish football.
