In Social Studies class, it's time to talk about "current events" from the newspaper. Three members of the Millionaire Kids Club - Isaiah, Sandy and Dennis - have agreed on a topic. They want to explain why so many homes in the community have "For Sale" signs. But their buddy, Stephanie, doesn't want to talk about this subject. After all, her family may have to sell their home too - and that has Stephanie terribly upset. Stephanie's dad has lost his job and can't pay for their home anymore. So will Stephanie's family be able to save their house? Or will they have to move out, and will Stephanie have to leave the neighborhood and her closest friends?

The legend of Jesse James -THE AMERICAN ROBIN HOOD
Jesse James and the Widow
• One day, as Jesse James and his gang were riding through Missouri, they saw a farmhouse and stopped to ask for something to eat. A widow lived there with three small children. She didn't have much in the house, but shared with them what she had.
• It was while they were eating lunch that Jesse James noticed that something was bothering this generous widow. He questioned her about it, and she broke down and told him her story. The mortgage was due on the house that very day, and since her husband had died, she did not have the money to pay it. Her landlord was not a generous man, and was sure to put her children and herself out on the street.
• "How much money do you need to pay the mortgage?" Jesse asked the widow.
• "Fifteen hundred dollars," the widow sobbed.
• Jesse James took out his money bag, counted out $1500 dollars and presented it to the widow.
• "I can't take this," she protested, but Jesse James insisted she use the money to pay off the mortgage.
• "Just make sure you get a receipt," he warned her, and she promised that she would. Then he got a description of the man, and left with his gang.
• Jesse James and his gang waited in the woods near the house until the man had collected his money from the widow. Then they rode out onto the road and stole their money back from the landlord.
THE END
• WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS STORY ?
• WAS JESSE JAMES AN OUTLAW OR A HERO?
• DO WE HAVE OUTLAWS OR HEROES LIKE THIS IN OUR COUNTRY?
• CAN YOU NAME THEM?

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

4. Isaiah, Dennis, Sandy and Stephanie were waiting for the morning bell to ring. It was Thursday, the day
everyone would bring in a news story to discuss during Mrs. Berry’s social studies class, when students would
talk about current events.
2
5. The four friends had formed The Millionaire Kids Club a year earlier. This year, they pledged to always bring in
news stories about money. As they compared news clippings, Isaiah, Dennis and Sandy were surprised to see that
each of them had chosen the same story to share today. The headline of the story read: “For Sale Signs Spring Up
Around Town.” The article talked about how lots of families were moving out of their town because they couldn’t
pay for their homes.
3
6. “I don’t want us to talk about that,” Stephanie said.
“Why?” Sandy asked. “Did you find a better article?”
4
7. “Well, no,” Stephanie answered quietly, looking down at the ground. “It’s just that I don’t want to think about
it because it’s happening to my family. We’re losing our house, which means I’ll be losing my room. So will my
little brother. Even my parents will lose their room. And I don’t know what will happen to our cat.”
5
8. Stephanie put her head in her hands and started crying. Her friends were stunned. Stephanie was always
so tough. She never cried. Dennis was the first to speak up. “It’s OK, Stephanie,” he said, putting his arm
around his friend.
6
9. Isaiah, who had been writing something in his notebook, looked up. “Yeah, Stephanie,” he said. “I’m sure
your parents will buy another house with a cool room for you. And I’ll bet they’ll stay right here in our
neighborhood, so you won’t even have to worry about going to a new school.”
7
10. Stephanie looked doubtful. “My family is losing our house because it costs too much money,” she explained.
“Remember how I told you that my dad lost his job a few months ago?”
“Sure we remember,” Isaiah said. “But I thought he got a new job.”
8
11. “He did,” Stephanie said. “But while he wasn’t working, we couldn’t pay all our bills. For awhile, my parents used
our savings to keep up, but now our savings is gone too. Last night, my parents told us that we have to move out
of our house. If we can’t pay for this house, I don’t see how we can afford to pay for a different one.”
9
12. Just then, the bell rang and the friends headed off to class. When Mrs. Berry announced it was time for current
events, Isaiah looked over at Stephanie. She nodded her head and said, “Yes, it’s OK. We can talk about your news
clipping.” Immediately, Isaiah raised his hand.
10
13. “OK, Isaiah,” Mrs. Berry said. “What news story about money do
you have to share?” By now, Mrs. Berry knew she could count on
The Millionaire Kids Club members to bring in money news.
