Arctic Speciality
The design of the Mikhail Ulyan-
ov was specifically focused on
ice-breaking capability and meet-
ing the challenges presented by
shipping in the Arctic waters. The
tanker was designed to transport
oil from the oil field at Prirazlom-
naya to terminal facilities located
near Murmansk. The tanker is ca-
pable of operating at -40 degrees
in temperature and can break up
to 1.5 metre thickness of ice with
its specially designed hull without
need of an escort.
Technology
The Mikhail Ulyanov has been
fitted with a vast array of state-
of-the-art technology, including
a dynamic positioning system,
communication equipment, two
radars specifically for extreme
temperatures and six information
displays, among other things. Oth-
er features include a bow loading
facility and a helideck. The dead-
weight capacity of the tanker is
70,000t.
