"What do you value most?"
"What would you most hate to lose?"
"What do your thoughts turn to most frequently when you are free to think of what you will?"
"What affords you the greatest pleasure?"
֎ Based on these four questions, what is your treasure?

This document is a foreword and table of contents for a compilation of Ellen White's writings on the advantages of country living. It warns that city living poses moral, social, and physical dangers and that God's judgments will soon fall upon the wicked cities. It encourages Adventists to heed the counsel to leave cities and avoid becoming entangled in labor unions and worldly organizations. The compilation is presented to reiterate this counsel and help church members make decisions in light of the impending last day events.
Solomon's success led to spiritual erosion over time as indicated by several warning signs. He made unwise alliances like marrying foreign women, engaged in unsuitable worship practices, and displayed unrestrained extravagance by accumulating excessive wealth, horses, and wives contrary to God's commands, which eventually caused him to turn away from God. While his failures were not sudden, the seeds were planted early in his reign through certain decisions and behaviors.
This document discusses biblical passages related to money and serving God versus serving money (mammon). It notes that Moses chose to suffer with the people of God rather than enjoy sinful pleasures. Jesus taught that one cannot serve both God and money. The document argues that how one handles money reveals one's sincerity and where one's heart truly lies, as your heart will follow your treasure. It asserts that a right attitude towards money shows one's sincerity in serving God, as money is ultimately under God's control.

The document provides biblical guidance on financial management and living below one's means. It cautions against living beyond one's finances through borrowing, excessive spending, or depending on others to sustain one's lifestyle. Several passages encourage self-control, sacrifice, planning and being content with food and clothing rather than pursuing wealth. The overarching message is that every money problem is a heart problem, and that we should use money to serve God rather than seek to be served by money.

1. King Solomon, the wisest man who once feared the Lord, strayed from his wisdom and God's commands by developing insatiable appetites for wealth and women later in life.
2. His heart became turned away from fully devoted to God, and he engaged in idolatry by worshipping the false gods of his many foreign wives.

This document provides guidance on overcoming obstacles by facing facts, using adversity for good, and choosing to serve God's kingdom. It begins by acknowledging that we live in a fallen world controlled by Satan where selfishness rules (Matthew 10:16, 2 Corinthians 4:4). However, it encourages readers to rebuild what was ruined and use past suffering positively (Isaiah 61:3-7). Ultimately, the choice is presented to serve God or the world's gods, and we are called to bring God's kingdom to earth through our actions and prayers (Matthew 6:10). The overarching message is that by acknowledging Satan's influence, choosing God, and working to establish his rule, we can overcome what stands in

David flees from Naioth in Ramah after Saul's religious experience and goes to Jonathan for help. He asks Jonathan what crime he has committed against Saul to make Saul try to kill him. Jonathan does not believe Saul would actually try to harm David, but agrees to help David determine the truth by observing Saul at an upcoming feast. Jonathan and David renew their covenant of loyalty to one another. At the feast, Jonathan discovers that Saul does indeed intend to kill David, and warns David so that he can flee for his safety. Jonathan and David part ways sadly, as Jonathan understands he can no longer protect David from Saul.

This document provides an overview of a Sunday school lesson about King Solomon's wisdom and downfall. It discusses how Solomon initially received great wisdom from God but later disobeyed God's commands by accumulating wealth and taking many foreign wives who turned him to other gods. The document uses passages from Proverbs, 1 Kings, and Deuteronomy to explain Solomon's sins of pursuing wealth, women, and idols, which caused God to become angry and tear the kingdom from Solomon.
The document discusses four realities that King Solomon learned about life from his own experiences. 1) Life without God is monotonous. 2) Human wisdom is limited and cannot find ultimate meaning. 3) Money and possessions do not lead to happiness or fulfillment. 4) Life is short and both the wise and foolish will be forgotten. Solomon determined that life only finds true meaning and purpose through acknowledging and following God.
David sends messengers to Hanun, the new king of Ammon, to comfort him after the death of his father Nahash, who had shown kindness to David. However, Hanun's advisers accuse David of trying to spy on their land. As a result, Hanun humiliates David's messengers by shaving off half their beards and cutting their clothes. David sends troops in response and defeats both the Ammonites and their allies from Aram.
1. The document discusses King Solomon's early life and wisdom, as well as his later disobedience to God's commands by accumulating great wealth and having many foreign wives.
2. It analyzes what contributed to Solomon's downfall, including an incredible appetite for wealth and women, in contrast to God's instructions for kings.
3. Solomon himself had warned about the dangers of adultery in Proverbs 5, though he did not follow this advice, as he took hundreds of foreign wives who led him to worship other gods.
Zephaniah warned of coming judgment on Judah and other nations for idolatry and sin, but also provided hope for a remnant. God will restore Israel and Judah, removing pride and impurity so his people can worship him with joy. Though once despised, God's people will be exalted and praised everywhere as he restores them from exile and draws them from every nation.
A verse by verse commentary on Zechariah 14 dealing with the day of the Lord when He comes to judge the nations, and people from all nations will come to worship the Lord.
This passage from Revelation describes the fall of Babylon the Great. It summarizes that Babylon was a dwelling place of demons and unclean spirits that led the nations into immorality. Merchants grew rich from her sensuality. The passage calls for God's people to separate from her sins and warns that Babylon's plagues will come swiftly in a single day for her pride and sins. It describes the merchants and sea travelers mourning the loss of Babylon's wealth, while heaven and prophets are called to rejoice at God's judgment against her.
The document discusses the Bible's teachings around money and possessions. It notes that two-thirds of Jesus' parables and one in ten verses in the Gospels directly discuss money. While money can promise security and significance, the Bible warns that the love of money is a root of evil and that one cannot serve both God and money. A godly perspective is to not store up treasures on earth but in heaven, use money to serve God rather than be enslaved by it, and find contentment through godliness rather than wealth.

God owns everything and entrusts resources to us to manage. Money itself is neutral, but can become "Mammon" or an idol if we worship it over God. While some see the Bible as condemning wealth, it also talks of wealthy men of God and promises blessings for those who obey God. We cannot serve both God and money, so we must put God first with our resources.
The document discusses the biblical perspective on money and possessions. It notes that the Bible has over 2,300 verses addressing money, more than any other topic besides love. While money can promise security and significance, the document asserts that one cannot serve both God and money. True security and significance only comes from serving God, not money or possessions. The love of money leads people to wander from their faith and causes many problems. Believers are called to be content with what they have and use money to help others rather than accumulating wealth for themselves.
The document discusses Christian giving and generosity. It notes that the average American Christian gives only 2.6% of their income annually, far less than what is biblically prescribed. It encourages readers to view themselves as stewards of God's resources and give generously, as their heart will follow their treasure. When Christians store up wealth in heaven through giving, they gain blessings and prosperity both in this life and the next.
The document discusses the Bible's teachings on wealth and money, noting that while money itself is not bad, the love of money can lead people away from God; it provides examples from the Bible of both wealthy and poor people who either accepted or rejected Jesus; and it emphasizes that true riches come from God and one's relationship with Him, not from earthly possessions.
The document discusses the negative effects of covetousness, listing them as: 1) It blunts the sensitive nerve of love; 2) It blurs the picture of life; 3) It banishes the fruit of generosity; 4) It breeds the worm of discontent; 5) It burdens the spirit with sorrow; 6) It blinds one to the true meaning of life; 7) It blasts the devotee with misery. The document uses numerous Bible verses to support each of these points.
The document discusses biblical perspectives on money, possessions, and generosity. It provides several "keys" or principles: 1) God owns everything and we are merely stewards of what he provides. 2) Where we put our money reveals where our heart is and determines where it will go. 3) Heaven, not earth, is our true home. 4) We should live not just for short-term pleasures but with an eye to eternal rewards. 5) Giving is the only remedy for materialism and selfish desires. 6) God blesses our generosity not to raise our standard of living but to increase our standard of giving.
This document discusses how to properly handle money according to biblical teachings. It provides passages from the book of Matthew that teach believers to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth, as earthly treasures are fleeting but heavenly treasures are eternal. Additionally, it notes that one cannot serve both God and money. The document advises that true security and contentment comes from putting one's hope in God rather than wealth. It concludes by reminding readers that they must choose to serve either God or money, but not both.
There is no one so poor as the wealthy man who puts all his trust in riches. We are human beings! God doesn't judge us based on our possessions. Riches make terrible masters but awesome servants!
Matthew 6:19-24: Synopsis: Jesus reminds us that practicing true righteousness is about my heart, my eye, and who I serve. There is peace in knowing that the only true treasure comes from our Father who rewards us generously as we choose to follow only Him.
The document discusses the biblical perspective on money and wealth. It notes that Jesus spoke more about money than any other subject, with many parables related to handling finances. While money can help alleviate some concerns, it also brings worries in obtaining, keeping, using, abusing, and losing it. The document encourages being content with food and clothing rather than pursuing wealth. It suggests storing up heavenly treasures instead of earthly possessions that can be destroyed.
The document discusses the 9th and 10th Commandments which forbid coveting a neighbor's possessions like house, wife, servants, animals or anything belonging to a neighbor. It provides biblical references on coveting and contentment, and examines what coveting is, what is forbidden, and what righteous desires are required by God instead of sinful coveting.
The document discusses how money can negatively impact relationships if it is "loved" rather than simply used as a tool. It provides biblical examples of relationship breakdown caused by greed or the love of money, such as Judas betraying Jesus for money. To guard against money harming relationships, the document recommends seeking relationship with God, building relationships with people, having a healthy view of money as something to be used rather than loved, and giving some away to upset the spirit of greed.
Exponential 06 Pastors' Conference: The Treasure Principleeternalperspectives
The document discusses several key points around Christian giving:
1. American Christians give a small percentage of their income to the church compared to what is biblically recommended. Increased giving could provide $140 billion more per year for God's work.
2. Where one puts their money shows where their heart is. Christians should give generously to heaven by prioritizing the kingdom of God over earthly possessions.
3. A negative view of heaven, often from misconceptions, prevents many Christians from looking forward to the new earth and hinders their walk with God. They should view heaven as the fulfillment of God's promises.
4. Giving is the only antidote to
Exponential '06 Pastors' Conference: The Treasure Principleeternalperspectives
The document discusses Christian giving in America. It notes that American Christians control 70% of global Christian wealth but the average Christian gives only 2.6% of their income. Less than 10% of Christians give 10% or more of their income as commanded in the Old Testament. The document argues Christians should view themselves as stewards of God's resources and store up treasure in heaven through generous giving that puts their heart in the right place and sees the new earth, not this world, as their true home.
Exponential '06 Pastors' Conference: The Treasure Principleeternalperspectives
The document discusses Christian giving in America. It notes that American Christians control much of the world's Christian wealth but give very little, with the average Christian giving far less than 10% of their income. Younger Christians give even less proportionally. It argues that Christians have misplaced priorities in how they spend their money and that their lack of generous giving hurts the church, missions, and their own spiritual growth. It encourages Christians to view themselves as stewards of God's resources and give more generously to store up treasure in heaven.

Less than 10% of Christians give 10% or more of their income as recommended in the Bible. Most of the little Americans do give goes to places it shouldn't. This document provides guidance on managing money through four steps: 1) not spending more than you earn, 2) getting out of debt, 3) creating and sticking to a budget, and 4) joining the "Kingdom class" rather than being focused on material possessions. It includes several biblical quotes emphasizing the importance of trusting God rather than money and warns against the idolization of consumerism.

It discusses the departments and branches of the US military, as well as military ranks, hierarchy, language, and general observations about military culture. Common mental health treatment issues among veterans that are covered include traumatic brain injury, PTSD, depression, suicide, substance abuse, and family issues. The document also provides information on the VA healthcare system and connecting veterans to community care providers.
What does it mean "taking the shield of faith"? Why does a Christian require a "shield"? What is faith? Is all faith the same? How does faith protect? Do you know how to use the "shield of faith"?
More is written about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ than of any other person in history. Why is that? What did He accomplish by dying on the cross? Why was His resurrection necessary? Is there strong attestation to Christ's resurrection? Must we believe He is alive today? How does the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth effect you?
All four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John -- record the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into the city of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, Nisan 10. This study is an exposition of John 12:12-19 and answers the question: "What's most important about Palm Sunday?"
What does "having your feet shod with the gospel of peace" mean? How does a Christian prepare their feet? Why is comparing the armor of God to the Roman soldier inappropriate? To what is this metaphor more likely referring?
What is the Christian's "Breastplate of Righteousness" described in Ephesians 6? We are often told the believer's armor is to be compared to that of a Roman soldier. Is this accurate? Study this lesson, and if possible, listen on FaceBook or YouTube by typing my name and the title or text of this study.
The first piece mentioned in the panoply of the "armor of God" for the Christian is "the belt of truth." But, what is truth? Why is it listed first? Why is it vital and what does it protect? Jesus said to Pilate, "To this end was I born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth." (18:37)
George Washington said citizens owe a duty to defend their free government with their property and services. Haile Selassie issued an order to mobilize all able-bodied Ethiopians, including women and children, to fight the Italian invasion. The Bible passage from Ephesians exhorts believers to be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God to stand against spiritual attacks from Satan and fight against evil spiritual forces.
The document provides an overview of how Christians are called to "walk worthy" according to passages in Ephesians and other books of the Bible. It discusses that believers are to walk in unity, love, light, and by being filled with the Spirit. Specific instructions are given, such as putting off the old self and putting on the new, imitating God, and walking in wisdom. The goal is for believers to mature in Christ through developing humility, gentleness, patience, and by submitting to one another out of reverence for God.
What is the Bible all about? What is its purpose? How can we get the most out of studying the Bible?
This lesson is part of a series of studies entitle, "Living the Word" taught at the Lighthouse Freedom Center. These slides will help you if you're following us online on Sunday at 8:45.
In many ways Jacob is a picture of every person. We were all by nature selfish, deceitful, "graspers". Jacob is a type of our human carnal nature. But, Jacob changed! One night he wrestled with the Lord and begged for a blessing. His blessing came in the form of a changed character, reflected in his new name: Israel. Israel is a picture of a person changed by God, someone with whom the Spirit of God dwells.
A. When? The vision occurred in the year that King Uzziah died.
B. What? Isaiah saw God sitting on a throne and was overwhelmed by God's holiness, confessing his own sinfulness. A seraphim then cleansed Isaiah's sins with a burning coal.
C. Why? God then commissioned Isaiah to go and speak for God, to which Isaiah responded saying "Here am I, send me."
God's sovereignty is evident in every aspect of life. Redemption is the overarching purpose of divine sovereignty. Genesis 31 reveals God's hand and heart in Jacob's relationship with Laban, a wiley, manipulative uncle, father-in-law, employer. This chapter is filled with lots of practical, relevant lessons in God's redemption for all of us.
The document summarizes several passages from the gospels describing Jesus' interactions with various disciples and others after his resurrection. It describes how two disciples traveling to Emmaus encounter Jesus but do not recognize him, and how he explains to them prophecies about the Messiah. It also recounts how Jesus later reveals himself to the disciples during a meal and to Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb.
What prevents world unity? Why have the world’s best of intentions and brightest of minds failed, abysmally, and repeatedly to achieve world unity and peace? What are common causes for disunity and conflict among Christians? How can church conflict strengthen and improve a congregation? When is church conflict destructive? What does James say is a common cause for conflict among Christians? (Jas. 4:1) What four steps does James give believers for conflict resolution? (Jas. 4:1-3; 4-6; 7-10; 11-12)
Jacob employed selective breeding strategies with Laban's cattle and flocks in order to increase his own herds. He used visual cues and separated the stronger specimens for breeding to concentrate desirable traits. As a result, Jacob's herds greatly increased in number while Laban's decreased, allowing Jacob to acquire significant wealth before leaving Padan Aram.
How is COVID-19 different from previous pandemics in history? How does the Coronavirus compare to future pestilences prophesied in the Bible? Do you think God sent the Coronavirus as a harbinger of future pandemics? If so, what should be learn about God and ourselves during COVID-19? As Christians how should we respond to pandemics? Do you have peace and hope? Why? How is your life, currently, giving others, especially non-Christians, cause to ask you for “an answer (lit. the reason) for the hope that lies in you”? (1 Peter 3:15)
God teaches each of us using sometimes intensely painful circumstances to inculcate profound and powerful lessons. Such was the case with Jacob, the deceiver, who spent 20 years with his uncle Laban being on the receiving end of deceitfulness. Everyone, Jacob and Laban, Leah and Rachel, and Zilpah and Bilhah learn life's lessons in God's classroom, known as Genesis 29.
How has COVID-19 changed you? Has the Coronavirus in any way changed your view of yourself, of the world, and of God? If so, have these changes been positive? Explain. As much as we may value science and medicine, what inherent limitations prevent us from basing our lives on them? (2 Timothy 6:19-21) How did each of the plagues defeat a god in Egypt? (Exodus 7-12) How do you think God, the Almighty God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Israel, the Lord Jesus Christ, is challenging the gods of our world today through COVID-19? (1 Samuel 17:47; 2 Chronicles 20:15-16; Zechariah 4:6)

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.
Introduction
Mantra Yoga is an exact science. "Mananat trayate iti mantrah- by the Manana (constant thinking or recollection) of which one is protected or is released from the round of births and deaths, is Mantra." That is called Mantra by the meditation (Manana) on which the Jiva or the individual soul attains freedom from sin, enjoyment in heaven and final liberation, and by the aid of which it attains in full the fourfold fruit (Chaturvarga), i.e., Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. A Mantra is so called because it is achieved by the mental process.

The Book of Revelation, filled with symbolic and apocalyptic imagery, presents one of its most striking visions in Revelation 9:3-12—the locust army. Understanding the significance of this locust army provides insight into the broader themes of divine judgment, protection, and the ultimate triumph of God’s will as depicted in Revelation.
Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

4. Simon Magus
(Acts 8:9-24)
18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of
the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he
offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power
also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive
the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “Your money
perish with you, because you thought that the gift of
God could be purchased with money! 21 You have
neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart
is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of
this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the
thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I
see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by
iniquity.” 24 Then Simon answered and said, “Pray to
the Lord for me, that none of the things which you
have spoken may come upon me.”
5. 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures
on earth, where moth and rust destroy
and where thieves break in and steal; 20
but lay up for yourselves treasures in
heaven, where neither moth nor rust
destroys and where thieves do not break
in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also.
6. 22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If
therefore your eye is good, your whole
body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye
is bad, your whole body will be full of
darkness. If therefore the light that is in
you is darkness, how great is that
darkness!
7. 24 “No one can serve two masters; for
either he will hate the one and love the
other, or else he will be loyal to the one
and despise the other. You cannot serve
God and mammon.
8. A. Belief Money will satisfy us
That's about $10,000 a minute,
assuming he plays 30 minutes per
game.
As "king of product endorsements" he
was making about $40 million a year.
He made $178,100 a day, working or
not.
Assuming 7 hours of sleep a night, he
made $52,000 every night!
Even at his peak, Michael Jordan
would have to save 100% of his
income for 270 years just to have $1
Michael Jordan made >$300,000 a game.
9. A. Belief Money will satisfy us

10. A. Belief Money will satisfy us
Howard Hughes:
Lived a joyless, half-lunatic life.
Fled from one resort hotel to another--
from Las Vegas to Nicaragua to Acapulco.
Acted progressively odder as he grew
older.
Had a straggly beard that hung down to
his waist and hair that reached down to
the middle of his back.
His fingernails were two inches long.
He had toenails that hadn't been trimmed
in so long they resembled corkscrews.
11. A. Belief Money will satisfy us
“Those who live for money spend
the first half of their lives getting all
they can from everybody else and
the last half trying to keep
everybody else from getting what
they have away from them, and
they find no pleasure in either half.”
William Jennings Bryan
12. A. Belief Money will satisfy us
Ecclesiastes 5:10 He who loves silver will not
be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves
abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.
Matthew 13:22 Now he who received seed
among the thorns is he who hears the word,
and the cares of this world and the
deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he
becomes unfruitful.
13. A. Belief Money will satisfy us
“Money never made a man happy yet,
nor will it. There is nothing in its nature
to produce happiness. The more a man
has, the more he wants. Instead of it
filling a vacuum, it makes one. If it
satisfies one want, it doubles and triples
that want another way.”
Ben Franklin
14. 1 Timothy 6:6–10
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it
is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having
food and clothing, with these we shall be
content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall
into temptation and a snare, and into many
foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in
destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of
money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which
some have strayed from the faith in their
greediness, and pierced themselves through
with many sorrows.

16. Achan – brought death to himself, his family
and dozens of men in battle due to his lust for
money and possessions (Josh. 7).
Balaam – tried to curse God's people for a
fee from Balak (Num. 22:4-35).
Delilah – betrayed Samson to the Philistines
for a money (Judg. 16).
Solomon – disobeyed God’s prohibition
concerning the accumulation of large
amounts of horses, gold, silver, and wives
lust for more and more wealth (Deut. 17:16-17).
17. Gehazi lied to Naaman and then to Elisha in
order to gain wealth for which he was afflicted
with leprosy (11 Kgs. 5:20-27).
Ananias and Sapphira withheld money they
said was given to the Lord and were struck
dead for it (Acts 5:1-11).
Judas, in the ultimate act of materialistic
treachery, asked the chief priests, "What are
you willing to give me it I hand Him over to
you?" then betrayed the Son of God for 30
pieces of silver (Mt. 26:14-16, 47-50; 27:3-10).
18. As lust is to adultery (Matthew 5:28)
As hate is to murder (1 John 3:15)
So greed is to idolatry (Colossians 3:5)
First and last of ten commandments warn
against idolatry and covetousness.
19. A. Two Treasures
1. On earth
Matthew 6:19 “Do not lay up for
yourselves treasures on earth, where
moth and rust destroy and where thieves
break in and steal;
Moths destroy fabric.
Rust destroys “precious metals.”
Thieves steal anything of earthly value.
20. When she died in 1962, Marilyn had an estate
valued at $1.6 million. She gave most of it to
her acting coach, Lee Strasberg, and another
large portion to Dr. Marianne Kris, her
psychoanalyst. She also left a trust fund to
her mother that offered about $5,000 per
year.
21. A. Two Treasures
2. On heaven
Matthew 6:20 but lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither moth
nor rust destroys and where thieves do
not break in and steal.

keep to gain what he cannot lose."
23. Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also.
Heaven

24. B. Two Perspectives
2. Bad Eye = Darkness
1. Good Eye = Light
Matthew 6:22–23 “The lamp of the body is
the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your
whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your
eye is bad, your whole body will be full of
darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is
darkness, how great is that darkness!
26. C. Two Masters
2. Mammon
1. God
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters;
for either he will hate the one and love the
other, or else he will be loyal to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve God and
mammon.
The CHOICE is
yours!
27. Mammon - name of a Syrian & Chaldean god,
similar to the Greek god of wealth, Plutus.
(μαμωνᾶς, mamōnas) – “that in which
one trusts”
Mammon
Masters(κύριος, kyrios) – lords, one who demands,
perhaps deserves, absolute allegiance
28. Martin Luther: "I have many things in my
hands and I have lost them all. But whatever
I have placed in God's hands, that I still
possess."
John Calvin: ”Where riches hold the dominion
of the heart, God has lost His authority."
C.S. Lewis: "He who has God and all things has
no more than he who has God alone."
King Midas was a very rich and greedy king of Phrygia (late 8th century BC dominated most of western and central Anatolia and rivaled Assyrua and Urartu for control of eastern Anatolia). He lived in a castle with his daughter Philomena, who was incredibly beautiful girl everyone adored. Philomena meant everything to King Midas.
Now, even though he was very rich King Midas always craved for more and more.
One day Philomena came up to her father and said "father there's a strange man at our gates," so King Midas held Philomena's hand and went out side to see who this strange man was. To his amazement it was Silenus, a magician and friend of the god Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and debauchery. Instead of sending Silenus away, King Midas invited him to stay at his palace. One day he commanded the magician Silenus, “Find me a spell that can get me more treasures than I already have.” The magician said, “Your majesty, I can give you a power that no one else in this world has. Anything that you touch will turn into gold.” The king was delighted with his good fortune. Everything he touched turned into gold. He turned trees, grass, tables, chairs, flowers, and vases into gold. He thought that he must be the richest man in the world.
But in the evening, when he sat down for supper, King Midas was dismayed. His food turned into gold the moment he touched it and he had to go to bed without any food! However, King Midas was too greedy to be sad about it.
The next morning, the king’s daughter ran to hug her father. But alas! The minute she kissed him, she turned into a gold statue! King Midas, who loved his daughter very much. was very sad and he ran to the magician for help. He cried, “Please help me, 0 Magician! I don’t want to be rich anymore. I only want my beloved daughter back.” The magician changed everything back to normal.
King Midas had learnt his lesson and was never greedy again.
George Elliot (Mary Ann Evans)
In Acts 8, an evangelist by the name of Philip was preaching in the city of Samaria. While there, many people trusted Jesus Christ as Savior. People were healed of infirmities and diseases, and other good things happened while he was ministering in this city. Among those who made professions of faith was a sorcerer named Simon. He was not only saved but also baptized. However, "when Simon saw that through laying on the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, 'Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.' But Peter said to him, 'Your money will perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!’.” A greedy man like Simon will always walk away disappointed because God's gifts can't be bought.
Hughes once said, "Every man has his price, or a guy like me couldn't exist." And yet when he died, most of his employees who have broken their silence reported their disgust for him. Money couldn't satisfy his greedy soul.
You're probably familiar with the expression "Money isn't everything, but it's way ahead of whatever is in second place." We all feel like that sometimes, but do you know that there are lots of things money cannot do?
Jesus always has two kingdoms in mind. He spoke here of the two treasuries, two perspectives, and two masters of those two kingdoms.
* Each couplet presents two options and demands one choice. There is a default choice if "no choice" is made. In a world gone wrong, unless the right choice is deliberately made and tenaciously clung to, the wrong choice will be automatically implemented. In that case people will inevitably spend their lives investing in the wrong treasury, adopting the wrong perspective, and serving the wrong master.
Jesus didn't tell us we are wrong in wanting to lay up treasures. On the contrary, He commanded us to lay up treasures. His disciples are to be aggressive, but wise, investors. He was simply saying, "Stop investing your treasures in the wrong place and begin laying them up in the right place."
Jim Elliot: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.“ We focus on his willingness to sacrifice and serve, and so we should, but we overlook his passion for personal gain. Without question, Jim Elliot was looking for profit. What separated him from the common Christian was not that he didn't want treasure, but that he wanted real treasure. He was not satisfied with the treasure that would be lost. He was content only with treasure that would last.
