The document describes the social hierarchy and roles in medieval society. At the top were the king, who granted land to barons and bishops in exchange for their loyalty and soldiers. Barons governed their own lands and further divided it among knights. Bishops held the highest positions in the church. Knights trained for battle in tournaments by the 12th century. Peasants and peasant women had few rights and worked the fields, with women additionally engaged in spinning. They were at the bottom of medieval society.

4. King King gave the land to the barons and bishop. The barons became the king´s servant, or vassals. They promise to the king and provide him with soldiers in times of war

6. Barons The most powerful barons governed fiefs as independent states , with their own private armies . Each barons divides his lands between lower lords, or knights

10. Vassals Around 1000, many vassals in England paid a tax called ``scutage´´ (shield money) instead of fighting for the kings.

12. Knight By the 12th century, knights and other fighting men trained for battle in tournaments. Two teams of knights fought each other in a mock fight called a tourney or mêlee.
