It notes that while Malaysia has high water coverage rates compared to other countries, about 40% of its water is lost to leakage. This results in annual losses of about RM 1.6 billion. On their first day, they found the fishing more challenging than expected due to an early ice-out changing the fish patterns. They learned they needed to slow down their retrieve significantly. Over the next few days, they adapted and were able to boat many quality smallmouth bass up to 6 pounds using techniques like slowly working baits near structure. One afternoon, Cleveland had exceptional success catching over a dozen largemouths averaging 4-6 pounds from a windblown bay, dubbed the "Bay of Pigs". They learned

1. The McClusky Canal and South Hoffer's Lake
Fishing is my favorite pastime
Fishing is my favorite recreational activity. I dream of the day I can retire and fish everyday. I am a
native North Dakotan and fishing all the lakes and rivers is my dream.
I spent most of my weekends last year on the McClusky canal near my hometown of McClusky. I
prefer to fish with live bait and a bobber, though I do enjoy trolling the canal and lake with my
brother and his family.
I am sharing my experience with the hope other fishers will share their stories of success.
Fishing the lake and canal May and June 2014
The fishing has been hot the last few weeks, both in the lake and on the canal. A Father's Day
tournament on the lake and canal yielded a prize winning 6 pound walleye. The winning walleye in
the kid's division was three pounds.
The pike and walleye are biting on everything from spinners with night crawlers to spoons. The
northerns are also hitting hard on minnows while bobber fishing.
I caught a pike and three nice walleyes in 45 minutes of trolling the canal on my brothers boat.
When bobber fishing in the canal the
smallmouth bass are biting night
crawlers very well and minnows
sporadically. I recently caught a three
pound smallmouth bass, my biggest bass
ever! Some bass are being caught while
casting or trolling, but they are not
biting as fast and hard as the walleyes
and pikes.
I have heard of some bluegills and perch
being caught in the canal, but they
aren't "hot" yet.
Good luck!

A brief history of the McClusky Canal
The McClusky Canal was built in the early 1970's. Its original purpose was to irrigate the farmland
in central North Dakota.
It was only recently that some farms have begun drawing water from the canal.
What the McClusky Canal has done is provide 75 miles of new recreational opportunities for North
Dakotans and visitors. Much of the canal is accessible to the public, and many lakes are sustained by
the fresh water flowing in from Lake Audubon.
The flow of water is controlled by gates along the canal. The gates I will be speaking about are just
north and south of Highway 200.
North Dakota Game and Fish have stocked the lakes and canal with a variety of sportfish that have
established successful breeding populations.
