The roughly 200,000 men and women who take the U.S. military oath each year do so with pride, but service to country can come at considerable personal expense. In recent years approximately half of all post-9/11 service members transitioning into civilian life have faced unemployment within 15 months of separation, and the unemployment rate among veterans is higher than that of non-veterans in most demographic groups.
The gravity of these statistics is compounded by the forecast that one million veterans are expected to transition to civilian careers over the next five years, and 75 percent of spouses married to an active-duty service member said being a military spouse had negatively impacted their ability to pursue a career. Opportunities to help the military community also extend to the family members who support injured, ill, or wounded service members. Caregivers play an essential role in supporting wounded service members and veterans, which can impose a substantial physical, emotional, and financial toll on families—and especially on the caregivers within them. Come to this session to learn about how companies are working to support veteran reintegration—and the benefits they are achieving for the community and the company.

Dear Friends & Supporters,
At Swords to Plowshares, we believe that housing is the gateway to stable health. Getting a homeless veteran housed in a safe environment is key to reducing the daily stress on mind and body after living without a stable home and establishes the foundation for a path to self-sufficiency.
A formerly homeless veteran, who receives housing and healthcare after years without access to support, can finally focus on addressing trauma and deteriorating health to start improving overall well-being.
Housing and healthcare are critical services for veterans who are poor, elderly, and sick, but nutrition can often be an afterthought for these individuals. For our veterans with a limited income, finding a warm, healthy meal can present a daily challenge. Over the last few months, we have been able to supplement regular meals provided at two of our housing sites with a breakfast served by corporate volunteers twice a month.
Also, thanks to food donations from Copia Foods, we have now been able to offer a meal to our homeless veterans who visit our Service Center. In this edition of our newsletter, you’ll hear about the incredible generosity of Craig Newmark and his support for our legal program’s effort to assist underrepresented
veterans. Another feature is our Pro Bono Attorney of the Year, Mike Lodge, a Coast Guard veteran who volunteers his time providing legal assistance to homeless and low-income
veterans with disabilities.
Also, you’ll learn about the impact our community organizer Bilal Mustafa, an Army veteran who organizes recreational activities for our residents. You’ll also see photos from the meals our wonderful corporate volunteers provide.
You too can make an impact and support the lives of our veterans. Please join us in helping end the cycle of poverty and homelessness with a purchase of hygiene items for our homeless veterans, setting up a monthly recurring donation, or dedicating another gift to support our vital programs and services.

The trust between the franchisor and the franchisee is very in order for both of to be successful and to prevent problems between the two the in future. In the article Trust: Key to Successful Relationship explains the importance of the trust between the franchisor and the franchisee issues can come up there is not any type commutations between the two. One of the statements in the article mentions that it important for the franchisor to review the marketing material provided potential franchisee to make sure the franchisor can and will deliver on the promises that are made in those materials. (Modell, 2010).Just like any type of agreement or advertisement where a company has to back up a service or a product, the franchisor has to standby the statements and promises that were in the material if not that could be some issues where that would cause a lack of trust between the franchisor and the franchisee which can result in legal problems hurting the reputation of the franchisor.

“Trust must be earned; it is not a given”
Trust is essential in any relationship. Trust is not given it is earned. When a relationship of any kind begins the actions of each person or group depicts the direction of the trust. Trust is build by working together and learning each other’s perspectives. Trust has many contributing factors. I think the number one component of trust is honesty and integrity. Honesty makes building trust easier. It provides openness and a point of establishment to know each other and their type of actions. In te being stages of a relationship trust is not easy because you don’t know the other person or group. Some people have alternative motives or hidden agenda that can be harmful to the other person. During the time of building a relationship it is important to give a little trust to provide the opportunity for it to be built. When in any relationship I believe we have to give a little to get a little. Ultimately you have to give trust to earn trust and vice versus.
Classmate Post 3
"Trust is one of the most important elements of a franchisor/franchisee relationship. Without trust, there is no way to ground the relationship, as there will not be effective communication or effective collaboration." (Whiteside, 2010). Trust is the foundation for the whole relationship. If there is not trust between the franchisor and franchisee then there will be break downs in the communication and the collaboration. If the communication breaks down then neither side will know what the other is doing then things will not get accomplished. Without trust the business will suffer because the franchisee will not believe that the franchisor has their business's best intentions in mind. Trust is what holds the relationship together and without it there will be no relationship.

Awarded Grant to Support Veterans Mediation
The Mandell Gisnet Center (MGC) has announced that it recently received a grant from the National
Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM)
Seaside, CA, December 06, 2014 - The Mandell Gisnet Center (MGC) has announced that it
recently received a grant from the National Association for Community Mediation (NAFCM) and the
JAMS Foundation to support Veterans Mediation in Monterey County and the surrounding tri-
County area to reach veterans across San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
“Over the past 30 years, mediation programs and services have proven to offer constructive and
effective approaches to resolve differences and conflicts between individuals, groups and
organizations, including veterans,” explains Isabel Bjork, Executive Director and Associate Dean,
Mandell Gisnet Center. “We are honored to be one of only six organizations nationally to be
recognized with a grant from The JAMS Foundation and the National Association for Community
Mediation (NAFCM) to support Veterans Mediation. We believe there is a strong need in our
community and look forward to helping veterans with some important challenges they face in their
lives.”
The Veterans Mediation program was founded with the recognition that veterans have distinct
values and experiences that shape their lives. The MGC staff works with veterans and their
families to resolve conflicts about housing, family life, benefits and work through mediation in a
safe environment. They also provide training by veterans for veterans and their families on
communication, conflict resolution and mediation techniques. Fees are based on a sliding scale.
For appointments or more information, email veterans@mandellgisnetcenter.org or call (831) 582-
5234.
The program is coordinated by Jack Signorella, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a dedicated
mediator and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) professional. Jack serves as the Veterans
Mediation Liaison and a volunteer mediator. Jack was the recipient of a Community Service Award
from the United Way of Monterey County in 2014. Following a successful career in medical
education and public service, Jack has directed his time and talents to mediation, with a particular
passion for veterans’ issues. Jack completed the mediation skills training course at MGC in 2012.
Since then, he has been mediating in MGC’s court mediation program and NEIGHBOR Project,
volunteering in over 100 cases.Jack has furthered his mediation skills with advanced mediation

About The Mandell Gisnet Center for Conflict Management:
The Mandell Gisnet Center for Conflict Management (MGC), the non-profit alternative dispute
resolution education and service arm of the Monterey College of Law, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is
committed to providing mediation and training services.
The Mandell Gisnet Center, housed in remodeled LEED Platinum Ford Ord buildings in Monterey
County, California, was founded with the vision that conflicts can be resolved in a peaceful,
amicable manner and without expensive, protracted, and damaging legal battles. In 2005,
Maurice Mandell and Rebekah Gisnet left a bequest to the Monterey College of Law as a result of
their personal challenges related to the legal system. Their bequest was used to form MGC.
Though they lived in a beautiful area and had significant resources at their disposal, Maurice and
Rebekah spent the last years of their lives involved in a bitter legal battle over a property dispute
with their neighbors. They spent many years fighting in court, but neither party ever found a
satisfactory resolution. At the end of their lives, as they looked back on the wasted time, energy,
and money spent on that dispute, they concluded that there had to be a better way. They resolved
that a large portion of their estate would be given as a bequest for the creation and promotion of
mediation and training services through Monterey College of Law. MGC has fulfilled this vision by
offering a variety of ADR education and services, including mediation. The mission of the MGC is
to:
- Promote and apply a mediative, empathetic, problem-solving approach to reduce and resolve
conflict
- Train Monterey County and tri-county residents to resolve disputes in their homes, workplaces
and community
- Offer a variety mediation services to Monterey County residents regardless of their ability to pay
- Promote mediation as an alternative to hostility, court battles, and violence
- Educate law students and attorneys in mediation, and engage them in community service to
resolve disputes
One popular MGC program involves their NEIGHBOR Project mediation services, a dispute
resolution process in which an impartial panel of mediators facilitates a conversation in a safe and
respectful environment. The mediators do not make decisions about the outcome and the
participants themselves work towards a solution with which they are comfortable.
