The 35 participants in the Leadership Carteret
Class of 2017 got off to a roaring beginning in
their journey to complete the 10-week program
and graduate March 15.
This is the 28th consecutive year that the
Carteret County Chamber of Commerce has
offered Leadership Carteret, which is designed
to build stronger community leaders.
Co-Chairs of the Leadership Carteret Steering
Committee are Alan Leary of RE/MAX Ocean
Properties and Steve Hellersperk of ACS
Computer Services and Toastmasters-Morehead
City.
This year, five not-for-profit organizations are
working with groups of Leadership Carteret
to help improve the quality of life in Carteret
County. Each group will be working on a project
to benefit one of the participating organizations.
Tate Johnson and Kitti Hardison with United
Way of Coastal Carolina are working with
Christina Fulcher, Mario Gil, Dawn Hoffmann,
Amanda Lyle, Misty Menezes, Butch Moore and
Beth Simpson. This group will install the first,
Born Learning Trail in Carteret County.
Rachel Bisesi with North Carolina Coastal
Federation is working with Krystal Bequette,
John A.C. Cartner, Steve Davis, Tina Gillis, Logan
Okun, Cathie Pittman, and Kim Price. This group
will be bagging recycled oyster shells.
Mac Sligh with Habitat for Humanity of the
Crystal Coast is working with Tonya, Akagbobi,
Shawn Banks, Nicole Leszczynski, Robert Lynch,
Mike Morgan, Stephanie Ross and Jessica
Vasquez. This group will be helping with building
a structure on a home.
Gene McLendon with Hope
Mission Christian Ministries is work-
ing with Sheree Higgins, Bruce
Holstad, Amanda Johnson, Bill
Mosier, Amy Suggs, Holy Tolston and
Melissa Young. This group will be
serving lunch to those in need in
Carteret County.
Joey Reynolds with Boys & Girls
Clubs of Coastal Carolina is work-
ing with Rebecca Amerson, Tommy
Burns, Cheryl Garner, Kristie
Goodwin, Sidney Hunter and Tricia
Zieverink. This group will be provid-
ing landscaping work to make our
community look great.

Catherine Elkins, director of CLFN, asks,
“What can we do to keep local farmers farming
in Carteret County over the next 15 years?”
Simply, CLFN wants to help consumers find local
farmers and to let farmers know what consum-
ers want. Our goals are increasing production
(more local farms and market gardens), increas-
ing marketing and distribution (farmers’ markets,
farm-to-school, and farm-to-chef initiatives), and
increasing consumer demand for local foods. We
encourage new farmers and welcome volunteers

To help consumers find local food, CLFN lists
local farmers and farm stands on a green bro-
chure with a county map and on our website
http://www.carteretlocalfood.org/local-farmers.
CLFN will sponsor farm tours in spring and fall
season. We want shoppers and their families to
support local farmers and learn what happens in
the fields and to learn how important local fami-
ly farms are to our community.
To help consumers eat healthy, CLFN will host
community cooking classes to highlight ingredi-
ents grown on local farms. “There is one thing
that matters, and that is YOUR health,” says
CLFN board member, Martha Vaughan.
CLFN supplies local produce and proteins for
unique dining events (Olde Beaufort Farmers’
Market Farm-to-Table Dinner, Blind Pig Dinner,
Wild Caught Music Festival). With Unitarian
Coastal Fellowship in Morehead, we host
Meatless Monday Potluck Dinners and screen
healthy food films.
Farmers have asked for help to comply with
regulations and expand marketing. CLFN will
co-sponsor training workshops for local farm-
ers to learn the rules behind Good Agricultural
Practices (GAP) certification, Good Handling
Practices (GHP), and the new Food Safety
Modernization Act (FSMA).
To increase produce sales, modern marketing
involves social media. We encourage farmers to
invite visitors as “agritourism destinations.” To
list what vegetables are available each week,
and where, CLFN will train farmers and consum-
ers how to use a mobile app called CropDots,
developed by Beaufort native Jennifer Arrington.
CLFN oversees Underground Farm and
Learning Center—which hosts farm tours, spe-
cial dinners, and pick-your-own vegetables & ber-
ries at two sites—811 Straits Road in Smyrna
and 1586 Hwy 101 in Beaufort. UFLC sells pro-
duce at Olde Beaufort Farmers Market, Coastal
Community Market, and to local restaurants. We
offer internships to high school students.
UFLC is now selling three seasons of
Community Support Agriculture (May–June,
July–September, and October–November). CSA

2016 Claus Crawl began with check-in
at Backstreet Pub and took participants
through downtown Beaufort where they
enjoyed specials at Clawson’s 1905
Restaurant, Cru Wine Bar, The Dockhouse,
Finz Grill, Plaza Mexico, Queen Anne’s
Revenge, Ribeye’s Steakhouse, The Rhum
Bar at Stillwater, The Royal James, and
Spouter’s Inn. When the after party began
at Backstreet Pub, participants used their
event tickets (graciously sponsored by Mill
Whistle Brewing) to vote on “The People’s
Choice” - The Rhum Bar at Stillwater and
Backstreet Pub took home the gold and
silver respectively! Our devoted Costume
Contest Winners included Buddy the Elf,
3 Dancing Reindeer, and a Lederhosen-ed
Couple!
This year, three of our members, Amber
Hughes, Jill Jaworski, and Will Rogers
had the opportunity to represent Connect
Carteret in the Boys and Girls Club’s 8th
Annual Trivia Bee. The Trivia Bee included
30 teams that competed in a competitive 6
rounds, the winner from each round squared
off in a winner takes all showdown. In the
end, the NCSU Memory Men were the know-
it-alls who won it all!
