Ireland, and British Overseas Territories (BOT)
• BOT includes Anguilla Islands, Gibraltar, Cayman
Islands and British Virgin Islands
• The geographical definition for statistical analysis in
British sovereign follows “Nomenclature of territorial
units for statistics” (NUTS) of Eurostat of European
Union.

5. • UK's trade data include transactions in England,
Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland only
• BOT were treated as UK's international partners from
outside the UK; therefore, no foreign trade data for
BOT, except the transactions between BOT and UK

The top two contributors of UK's IP trade surplus
were “Distribution of audio-visual and related
products” (£1.5 billion) and “Franchise and
trademarks” (£1.4 billion), as in Figure 5

Most of US patents were generated in England, as in
Figure 6

BOT have significant US patent holding, as in Figure
6 and Figure 7
