Our main purpose is to offer a closer look at professional culture regarding Portuguese journalists’ views and attitudes on audience participation, the way they are managing user contributions, the possible changes entailed in news routines, workflows and relationship with the audience, as well as the impact on economical goals of media organizations. Combining discussion about organisational contexts and national particularities in terms of cultural, political and media systems frameworks, this study aims to provide valuable data on professional self-perceptions on the role of journalism and the diverse means of audience involvement.

Opinion polls companies are major stakeholders, if not actors, in the 2013 General Election campaigns. Polls are regularly reported and commented on in the media. They are an inseparable part of news coverage as there is no more accurate way to gauge the sentiments of the voters, at a given time, than through a carefully designed and executed opinion poll. But polls are also criticized, especially by political party leaders who disregard results that do not favor them and by some civil society actors who say they promote a two-horse race campaign. The situation has forced opinion poll researchers and company managers to appear on political TV and radio shows to defend their methodology, and their integrity. Kenyans can remember that in the run up to the 2007 General Election, the media’s lack of capacity to contextualize and analyze data led to confusion when the results didn’t match predictions. The media had failed to explain the difference between polling data and election results. Internews in Kenya recently trained a group of radio journalists to improve the use, analysis and reporting of opinion polls. Over 25 journalists were taught to scrutinize the methodology of different polling firms. When has a poll been conducted according to accepted professional standards? When does a poll’s findings have legitimate news value? What is an appropriate way to publish or broadcast newsy poll findings? Internews in Kenya Democracy and Governance Programs Director Brice Rambaud responds in the following Power Point presentation.

Although the majority of mechanisms and instruments which aim to support media ethics and journalistic professionalization in Poland were introduced at an early stage of political and social transformation in the 1990s, media accountability is still in the making. The moderate level of journalistic professionalization might be explained by the weakness of existing self-regulatory mechanisms (codes of journalistic conduct, The Council of Media Ethics), divisions within journalistic communities (left wing-oriented vs. right-wing politically oriented) and the growing economic pressure. Bearing in mind that decision-making processes, supportive management as well as organizational structures and cultures might have an impact on journalistic behaviour and the understanding of roles and journalistic quality, this paper will go a long way in explaining the state of media accountability and transparency from the perspective of newsrooms. Referencing to the outcomes of empirical international research project “Media Accountability and Transparency in Europe (MediaAcT)” (2010–2013) the study will provide evidence similarities and differences in the perception of tools and existing practices by journalists from different types of media and job positions.

James Roland Jones, Diverse Perspectives and Underrepresented Voices: Citizen journalism has opened up a platform for underrepresented voices and marginalized communities to share their stories. By bypassing traditional gatekeepers, citizen journalists can shed light on issues that may be overlooked or underreported by mainstream media, fostering a more inclusive and diverse media landscape.

Citizen Journalism is basically defined as collecting, disseminating and analyzing news as well as information by mainly non-professionals among the public where specifically there is use of internet in communicating with the public. This information which is provided by private individuals can take many forms varying from a podcast editorial to a report about council meeting. One very important feature of the citizen journalism is that it is found usually found online and moreover, the emergence and quick availability of internet with its web-related innovations has made the concept of citizen journalism possible. (Rogers, 2015)
