Transylvania is a region in central Romania that has a long and troubled history. It was once ruled by Hungary and later occupied by Ottoman Turks. One ruler, Vlad Dracul, resisted the Turks and became a Romanian hero. Bram Stoker's fictional character Count Dracula was inspired by Vlad Dracul. While Bran Castle is often claimed to be the inspiration for Dracula's castle, historians believe the actual castle was Poenari Castle, built by Vlad Dracul near the village of Poenari. Poenari Castle fell into ruin but some sections have been restored.
