The Future of Direct Communications Technologies and Proximity-based Applicat...ReportLinker.com
Overview: There are a number of technologies that may be deployed that all provide the ability for devices to "discover" one another, although over different distances ranging from centimeters (Near Field Communications), to meters (Bluetooth), to 10s of meters (Wi-Fi). They also all provide the ability for the devices to communicate directly with one another without a centralized network. Some of these use direct communication as their primary mode of communication e.g. NFC or RFID. Others are more traditional networks which provide direct communication ability as an adjunct to their primary network functions e.g. LTE-Direct or Wi-Fi Direct. Most of the short-term drivers for proximity-based services will be mobile advertising and social networking, especially friend-finder services or dating services, and gaming. In the longer term, other applications will come into play within the scope of the so called Internet of Things. The challenge and opportunity for network operators will be to develop new user scenarios and even new business models to generate revenues from these services. This research uncovers opportunities that will be both beneficial and disruptive to the existing ecosystem and value chain. The Impact of IT Technologies on IT Decision Makers in the United
States and Europe
Published on July 2014
Report Summary
Opportunities for IT Technologies Providers in Government Sector
The main objective of this research is to measure the current usage and future decision making behaviour toward information
technology (IT) within the government sector. Overall, out of the 5 key verticals surveyed, the government sector contributes the
second highest percentage of its revenue to the IT budget. New regulatory requirements that raise the cost of IT are the greatest
concern of the sector, especially because the goal of reducing enterprise costs is a key factor that most influences IT investment
decision making. Currently, web conferencing, cloud computing, and mobile apps have the highest usage rates. M2M
communications is expecting the greatest growth rate over the next 3 years, followed by TDM phones, and UCC.
Research Objectives
The overall research objective is to measure the current use and future decision making behavior toward information technology (IT)
within the government sector, specifically: smart phones, tablets, mobile apps, cloud computing, video, audio, and web conferencing,
Internet Protocol (IP) telephony, enterprise and consumer social media, unified communications client (UCC), time-division
multiplexing (TDM) phones, business grade and consumer softphones, customer relationship management (CRM), headsets,
machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, and mobile device management (MDM).
Specifically, Frost & Sullivan aims to:
-Understand the IT-related challenges organizations face today
-Asses the current and future use of enterprise communications technologies
-Evaluate factors that drive investments in enterprise communications technologies
-Gauge the communications infrastructure trends
-Appraise the available IT budgets
-Measure the impact the workface has on IT technologies
Methodology
Using a Web-based survey methodology during September and October 2013, Frost & Sullivan surveyed 151 Information Technology
decision makers working in the government sector, located in the United States and in Europe, who were involved in the company's
IT-related purchases.
Frost & Sullivan's survey methodology uses online panels to source only qualified respondents. Respondents must meet
requirements set by a screening process prior to full survey participation. Online panels consist of individuals who volunteer to
participate in Web-based surveys and typically receive compensation directly from their panel membership for participating in qualified
survey research. In general, survey respondents do not receive direct compensation from Frost & Sullivan for participating in research
projects.
