The hungry caterpillar emerges from an egg and eats through various fruits over the week, still feeling hungry each day. By Saturday he has eaten through one of each fruit but has a stomach ache. After building a cocoon and staying inside for two weeks, he emerges as a beautiful butterfly, no longer hungry.

1. On Tuesday he ate through 2 pears, but
he was still hungry

3. In the light of the moon a little egg lay on
a leaf.

4. He made a small house, called a cocoon.
He stayed there for 2 weeks, until he
nibbled a wee hole out.

5. On Wednesday he ate through 3
plums, but he was still hungry

6. On Saturday he ate through all this food.
That night he had a stomach ache

7. On Monday he ate through 1 apple, but he
was still hungry.

8. Now he wasn’t hungry anymore, and he
wasn’t a little caterpillar any more. He
was a big fat caterpillar

9. On Thursday he ate through 4
strawberries, but he was still hungry

10. He was a beautiful butterfly.

11. On Friday he ate through 5 oranges, but
he was still hungry.

12. On Sunday the caterpillar ate through 1
green leaf. He felt much better

13. One Sunday morning the sun came up and
pop! Out of the egg came a very hungry
caterpillar.
