✣ First, scholars, students and others of Cape Town university signs a petition to
remove the ‘statue 1’ , a racist entrepreneur-coloniser, from their campus. The campaign
to remove the statue began a series of thoughtful and serious questions about the
decolonization of education, the progress (or lack thereof) of racial and economic
equality in the post-apartheid South Africa. (Pic Next slide)
✣ Not so far away, another such campaign arose in another country regarding removal
of another ‘statue 2’ , of someone, who allegedly described his creed to be ‘infinitely
superior’ than the native black folks.

✣ The Janissaries (New Soldiers) were elite infantry
units that formed Ottoman empire’s household
troops, bodyguards and is considered to be the
first standing army of Modern Europe. They had
distinctive uniforms and, unlike other military
units, were paid salaries and lived in barracks.
They were the first corps to make extensive use
of firearms
✣ This army used to comprise men, who were
recruited as early as from the age of 8 up to the age
18, based on the principle of ‘Blood Tax’. They
used to be taught Turkish language, literature
and art.
✣ Who are these men?

The campaign to remove the statue began a series of thoughtful and serious questions about the decolonization of education, the progress (or lack thereof) of racial and economic equality in the post-apartheid South Africa. They had distinctive uniforms and, unlike other military units, were paid salaries and lived in barracks. They were the first corps to make extensive use of firearms ✣ This army used to comprise men, who were recruited as early as from the age of 8 up to the age 18, based on the principle of ‘Blood Tax’. They used to be taught Turkish language, literature and art. ✣ Who are these men? 11
