The Globe Theatre was built in 1599 in London by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It burned down in 1613 but was rebuilt the next year. A modern reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, called Shakespeare's Globe, was built in 1997 near the original site. The Globe was owned by actors who were also shareholders, including Shakespeare who initially owned 12.5% but later only 7%. It was built using timber from an earlier theatre.
