Slides from keynote address of Marj Kirkland, president of the Children's Book Council of Australia, 2009-2010, at the Hands On: Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom and Library conference, Nov. 15, 2008, Singapore
Reading notes for class March 30, 2015. Slides created as reading notes for this week's theme, "Your Brain on Books", in preparation for our documentaries/PSAs encouraging pleasure reading.

For aspiring journalists, the challenges of dyslexia can seem insurmountable, especially in the face of an educational system that is ill-equipped to help. Many with dyslexia and related learning and attention deficit disorders also struggle with low self-esteem and emotional health, leading to the assumption that they cannot succeed, especially in a profession dominated by reading and writing. This book profiles famous broadcast journalists who overcame the long-overlooked, often misdiagnosed learning disability, dyslexia, to succeed at the highest level. Among them are Emmy Award winners, including CNN's Anderson Cooper and Robyn Curnow, NBC's Richard Engel, and ABC's Byron Pitts. For students and practicing journalists, it is a resource to learn more about dyslexia and how best to approach covering "the invisible disability." Each of the journalists profiled offer advice into the best practices in researching, interviewing, writing, and presenting issues related to dyslexia.
More than twenty years ago, Robert Croshon, an elderly friend of Frye Gaillard's, told him the story of Croshon's ancestor, Gilbert Fields, an African-born slave in Georgia who led his family on a daring flight to freedom.
Fields and his family ran away intending to travel north, but clouds obscured the stars and when morning came Fields discovered they had been running south instead. They had no choice but to seek sanctuary with the Seminole Indians of Florida and later a community of free blacks in Mobile.
With Croshon's blessing, Gaillard has expanded this oral history into a novel for young readers, weaving the story of Gilbert Fields through the nearly forgotten history of the Seminoles and their alliance with runaway slaves. As Gaillard's narrative makes clear, the Seminole Wars of the 1830s, in which Indians fought side by side with former slaves, represents the largest slave uprising in American history.

Keynote talk for EUROCALL 2017 (August 25, 2017) at the University of Southampton.
We live in a time of change that requires flexible and creative approaches to the socio-political mandates and constraints imposed upon our teaching and scholarship. While CALL provides us with technology-mediated solutions to some of the challenges that stem from recent political developments (e.g. subverting limitations to academic freedom imposed by national travel bans; see Oskoz & Smith, 2017), technology itself poses other challenges, including threats to personal dignity, privacy, individual agency, and democratic digital citizenship (European Data Protection Supervisor, 2015). In this talk I argue that we look to fandom for inspiration and motivation in responding to the socio-political challenges facing us in this time of change.

Scope:
This international book series attempts to do justice to adult education as an ever
expanding field. It is intended to be internationally inclusive and attract writers and
readers from different parts of the world. It also attempts to cover many of the areas
that feature prominently in this amorphous field. It is a series that seeks to underline
the global dimensions of adult education, covering a whole range of perspectives. In
this regard, the series seeks to fill in an international void by providing a book series
that complements the many journals, professional and academic, that exist in the
area. The scope would be broad enough to comprise such issues as ‘Adult Education
in specific regional contexts’, ‘Adult Education in the Arab world’, ‘Participatory
Action Research and Adult Education’, ‘Adult Education and Participatory
Citizenship’, ‘Adult Education and the World Social Forum’, ‘Adult Education
and Disability’, ‘Adult Education and the Elderly’, ‘Adult Education in Prisons’,
‘Adult Education, Work and Livelihoods’, ‘Adult Education and Migration’, ‘The
Education of Older Adults’, ‘Southern Perspectives on Adult Education’, ‘Adult
Education and Progressive Social Movements’, ‘Popular Education in Latin America
and Beyond’, ‘Eastern European perspectives on Adult Education’, ‘An Anti-Racist
Agenda in Adult Education’, ‘Postcolonial perspectives on Adult Education’, ‘Adult
Education and Indigenous Movements’, ‘Adult Education and Small States’. There
is also room for single country studies of Adult Education provided that a market for
such a study is guaranteed.

It was great to meet and talk with TN librarians! Thanks for this invitation and opportunity to share CCSS tactics for reading, research and making connections for Millennial learners. Remember it's all about the kids...the Millennial, self-centered, want-to-own their own learning, kids.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

19. Reading fiction is a social simulator “ For the first time in history, there is now scientific evidence that reading fiction really does have psychological effects. Fiction is a simulation that runs on the software of our minds…it is a kind of simulation of the social world. ..just as people’s skills as pilots improve when they spend time in a flight simulator, so people’s social skills should improve when they spend time reading fiction.” Research by Mar, Hirsh, dela Paz, Peterson and Oatley reported in: Oatley,K 2008 ‘The science of fiction’, New Scientist, 28 June, p.42-43.

21. The hero of the book (“The Outsider”) is condemned because he doesn't play the game ... He refuses to lie. Lying is not only saying what isn't true. It is also, in fact especially, saying more than is true and, in the case of the human heart, saying more than one feels. We all do it, every day, to make life simpler. But Meursault, contrary to appearances, doesn't want to make life simpler. He says what he is, he refuses to hide his feelings and society immediately feels threatened.

If they are reading, WHAT are they reading? “ Reading may be harmful to your kids:…” (Tom Engelhardt, 1991) Children’s reading is marked by ‘glut and deprivation’…Many books were formulaic and predictable… Often, the most popular books were linked to film and TV characters. “ Buried alive: Our children and the avalanche of crud” David Denby “ Our kids…are shaped by the media as consumers before they have a chance to develop their own souls.” “ The general cumulative effect of this pop culture is to make consumers out of children, not responsible citizens…” As quoted in “Sticks and stones” by Jack Zipes
