What skills does the future of industrial design require? We asked 43 senior-level designers and design managers to weigh in on educating the next wave of young designers.
This catalog lists the seminars in our Project Management Certificate program. All of them can be offered on an in-company basis or for other universities.
This document discusses the role of HR in developing an agile organization and outlines a case study for competency mapping. It describes competency mapping as identifying the key competencies within each business unit and developing detailed definitions and behavioral indicators for measurement. A multi-sprint approach was used where competencies were identified, defined, and measurement approaches developed in iterative sprints with retrospection. The goal is to assess all employees against the core competencies to identify development needs and support performance management. The program has been successfully implemented for delivery functions and will be expanded to support functions.
Reading a fresh trend report should fill your head with new perspectives on how to transform your business. However, the value of a trend report often hinges on the ability to translate its themes correctly into good ideas. When misunderstood, trends can feel uninspiring, confusing, or just plain weird. Given that there are few standards for how trends should be communicated, the chances of misinterpreting them seems high. Two experiments using ideation sessions showed that sensory language and image-based priming can dramatically improve a person’s ability to translate trend information into relevant ideas. Learn why a “chef-inspired” trend is better than a “gourmet” one, or why “hallucinogenic” properties are better than “mood-altering” ones.
The document discusses different approaches to using a student's mother tongue in an English language classroom. It argues that using the mother tongue can help students understand new concepts by relating them to what is already known. It also allows students to feel secure enough to ask questions and explain problems. However, there is a risk they will hear too little English. The document provides practical ideas for balancing mother tongue and English use, such as giving instructions in both languages or teaching classroom language phrases. The overall approach is to use English as much as possible while avoiding student confusion.
1. The document discusses the need to study the translation process systematically rather than focusing only on models and diagrams.
2. It argues that understanding the cognitive process translators undergo when translating a text is important for improving translation skills.
3. Several experts are quoted warning that current understanding of the brain and memory is insufficient to fully describe the translation process, and that both descriptive and inductive approaches are needed.
This document provides an overview of the history and development of translation studies as an academic discipline. It notes that while translation has long been practiced, translation studies emerged as a formal discipline in the 1950s and 1960s. Early work focused on contrastive analysis and linguistic approaches to translation. The field has rapidly expanded since the 1990s, with numerous university courses, conferences, journals, and books focused on translation studies. It is now recognized as an independent, multidisciplinary academic field encompassing various theoretical and practical approaches to written translation.
Three Counterintuitive Truths of Good Design (Why A Designer Would Make a Bad...Michael Roller
Insights from the fields of behavioral science and evolutionary psychology can rock the foundation upon which good design is built (beauty and function). Learn three counterintuitive truths that reframe the definition of good design while applying them through a simple framework that maps the typical and novel properties of products or concepts to identify strategies for refinement. As a conclusion, this framework draws upon the structure of a joke to compare the similarities between humor and innovation.

This document provides a summary and analysis of furniture trends observed at the 2011 International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). It identifies six key trends through the lenses of value, ubiquitous technology, recession rebound, and green majority. The first trend is "Mod Mix," which features modern designs updated with bold colors, refined surfaces, and attention to detail. The second trend is "Futureganic," which explores new materials and production methods to create delicate, motion-inspired forms. The document then analyzes and visualizes four other trends: "Strange Craft," "Curated Curiosities," "Nouveau Riche," and "Future Perfect." Overall, the summary examines emerging patterns in furniture design and how they relate

The document analyzes trends observed at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, identifying three key patterns - Cyborg, Retrosexual, and Strong, Silent. It then explores applications of these trends through examples and predictions of how they may impact industries. The document aims to inspire new ideas and ways of addressing consumer needs by providing tangible examples that can be easily reapplied.

Ergonomics and human factors, quality of ideas, and positive attitude were identified as the most important skills and traits for junior industrial designers according to a survey of 100 senior designers. Problem identification and framing were considered important but difficult to define specific skills for. Execution skills like ideation sketching and CAD modeling were also prioritized over presentation skills alone. Personality traits like passion and cultural fit were seen as even more crucial than technical abilities alone. Beautiful and intelligent design solutions that demonstrate aesthetic sensitivity were the highest ranked design skills overall.
