John Guandolo founded the Strategic Engagement Group which provides training on threats to national security. He also supports the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which advocates for research on multiple sclerosis (MS) and help for those affected. There are four main types of MS - primary progressive MS, relapsing-remitting MS, secondary progressive MS, and progressive-relapsing MS - which can have mild, moderate or severe symptoms and disease courses.

Outside his professional work, John Guandolo supports
the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, an organization
that advocates for MS research and helps those affected
by the condition. The Society identifies four types of MS.
All four may possess a disease course of mild, moderate,
or severe.
-Primary-progressive MS (PPMS): Characterized by the
steady decline of neurological function, PPMS involves
less inflammation and fewer brain lesions than other MS
forms.

3.  However, those diagnosed tend to possess more spinal
cord lesions and experience more difficulty with everyday
activities. PPMS also involves no distinct relapses or
remission periods.
-Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS): The most common
form, RRMS makes up approximately 85 percent of MS
diagnoses. People with RRMS experience attacks of
worsening neurological function called relapses, followed
by recovery periods known as remissions. Relapses
involve inflammatory attacks on the membrane within the
central nervous system. Inflammatory cells also cause
brain lesions. During remission, symptoms improve
partially or completely.

4.  -Secondary-progressive MS (SPMS): After a period of relapses
and remissions, many people with RRMS will transition into
SPMS, in which the disease will begin progressing at a steadier
pace. Disease progression occurs without periods of remission,
and those affected by it may still experience relapses caused by
inflammation. SPMS is characterized by nerve damage or loss.
-Progressive-relapsing MS (PRMS): Approximately 5 percent of
MS patients will receive a PRMS diagnosis, making it the least
common type of MS. PRMS progresses at a rate similar to
PPMS, accompanied with a steady decline in neurological
functions. Unlike the PPMS form, PRMS involves occasional
relapses caused by inflammatory cells.
