The floating gardens of Xochimilco, known as chinampas, have existed in the waterways of the area since Aztec times and are a unique experience in Mexico City, contributing to Xochimilco being called the "Venice of Mexico." Though the waterways are now smaller, the floating gardens still attract many Mexican people each weekend as a relaxing tradition and way to prepare for the upcoming week. UNESCO recognized Xochimilco as a heritage site in 1987 for its historical floating gardens and canal system.
