Communication
A process by which information is exchanged between individuals
through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior
Communication has evolved over the decades due to technological
advances. Some people believe it has hindered us in hearing what
people are really saying, but before we can look at this we must
examine how our communication devices have changed.
Cavemen used
illustrations to tell
stories.
In the 6th Century people utilized feather and ink to write.
Pigeon post was then used to transport a message a long distance but this took
time.
In 1792 the telegraph was invented which provided a faster method of delivering a
message by using symbolic messages without delivering an object bearing
message.
Thanks to Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, we were given a more personal way of
communicating with the invention of the telephone.
Cellphone technology allowed
us to communicate on the go.
The internet then became the tool
to communicate with programs like
MSN messenger. With more than
300 million people using it every
month.
Skype provided a method of conversing with others via video. This allowed them to
be a part of peoples lives from long distances.
Twitter provided a quick and convenient way of telling a large group people what
you were doing with one click of a button.
Snapchat is the latest means of communication using pictures, with more than
18.6% of the iPhone population using this app.
After looking at how communication has evolved through time you
have to ask yourself has our communication devices changed us or our
access to communication that has resulted in our change.
The number of items mailed has decreased by 54.7 billion items since 2006 as it is easier
to post Merry Christmas on Facebook than send out Christmas Cards.
Before
Facebook
With
Facebook
56% of
American
adults are
now
smartphone
users
As of 2013
there are
more
phones
than
people on
earth
Studies have shown that
Technology has not isolated people and made them cold like originally
thought but connected them through a screen instead of face to face.
Conclusion
Communication devices haven’t directly changed society but it is
societies level of access to communication that provides the image that
society is colder. It’s behind their screen that people are now
communicating.
“Electric communication will never be a substitute for the face of
someone who with their soul encourages another person to be brave
and true” – Charles Dickens
That being said……
