Greg Focker meets his girlfriend's parents before proposing marriage, but her suspicious father becomes every date's worst nightmare as he tries to sabotage their relationship. While the evolution of comedy from the 1990s to 2000s was not dramatic, Meet the Parents takes the idea of meeting the parents and exaggerates it for comedic effect through cringe-worthy humor to a greater extent than the more lighthearted comedy of Mrs. Doubtfire. This case study provides one example of how comedy genres developed over time through different styles of humor.
