The Emancipation Proclamation was a document written by Abraham Lincoln towards the end of the Civil War that announced the freedom of all slaves in the Confederate states in rebellion against the United States and that gave basic rights to former slaves. The Proclamation made slavery illegal and applied to Southern states that had seceded, demonstrating Lincoln's view that all people were equal and the nation could not continue to be divided over the issue of slavery.
