This study examined the effects of skin tone bias on perceptions of beauty in African American women. The researcher hypothesized that lighter skin tones would be viewed as more attractive regardless of participant race. 24 participants viewed photos of light and dark skinned African American women and rated their attractiveness. Results found no significant difference in ratings between skin tones. However, lighter skin tones received higher average ratings. Females rated lighter skin tones higher, while ratings differed by race and gender of participants. The researcher suggests future studies use altered images and examine impacts in other domains. Overall, the study aimed to spread awareness of how skin tone bias affects African Americans personally, socially and economically.
