Physical, Psychological and Spiritual Suffering and Your CareerEmployment Crossing
Suffering is a fact of life and cannot be ignored. There are three types of suffering: physical, psychological and spiritual. Harrison advises a balance among these three forms of suffering so that we do not experience any one of them in too great a proportion to the others. It is by balancing the suffering we are experiencing in the world that we are able to live lives of fulfillment.

The document discusses how having siblings, specifically sisters, has impacted the author's life. As the eldest of seven siblings, the author felt a great deal of responsibility for caring for their sisters and worrying about supporting the family financially. However, having sisters also made life more enjoyable, with someone to share thoughts and experiences with. The document expresses how treasured family and siblings are to the author.
The author recounts getting caught stealing from a Meijer store with friends. They had been shoplifting for months, stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods. On December 22, 2008 they got greedy and spent too much time in the store, breaking their own rules, and were caught by undercover security. They were detained, questioned, and taken to a juvenile detention center. The author reflects on how this experience has given him valuable life lessons despite his past troubled actions.
This document summarizes the author's family history and their reasons for immigrating to the United States. It describes the author's father's family originating from Mexico and several family members, including aunts and uncles, making the difficult journey across the border into the U.S. for better opportunities. The author's father decided to immigrate to provide a better life and education for his children. The author recalls the emotional experience of being separated from her father for two years as a child and finally reuniting with him in the U.S.
The author learned more about their family history by interviewing parents and grandparents, as online research yielded limited results. Speaking to elders revealed insights into their ancestry that the author was previously unaware of. The project of gathering family research through primary sources like interviews proved to be an interesting and insightful experience that taught the author more than expected about their family's history.
Step parent adoption is the most common form of adoption in the US, but the author's stepfather chose not to adopt them and their siblings, making them feel like outsiders in their own home. At a meeting called by the mother, she excitedly told the children their stepfather was considering adopting them, but he sat nervously silent. Later, he dismissed the children's questions about adoption, crushing them and making them wonder what was wrong with them. The parents should have discussed adoption privately instead of presenting it as an option to the children when only one parent wanted it.

What do these people have in common? Former president Ronald Reagan. ex-Dallas Cowboy Hollywood Henderson. Writer Lorian Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. Comedian Louie Anderson. Actress Susan Sullivan Former hockey star Derek Sanderson. And performer Suzanne Somers.
Hello. I'm Robin Young, and like everyone I just named, I grew up in an alcoholic home. Now I know some of you may remember me as a co-host of Evening Magazine, a former correspondent for NBC News, but now I also refer to myself as something called an adult child of an alcoholic.
Now I know that doesn't make sense at first. Adult child. What does that mean? But please listen, because tonight's program may make some people's lives make sense, some for the first time.
We're going to be talking about adults confronting the fact that the alcoholism they grew up with was not only very painful when they were children, but has had a profound effect on them as adults.
And this alcoholism isn't always easy to see. I mean, sure, there's the violent drunk that you see on television, but we're also talking about the silent homes where kids grew up in constant fear that there would be violence, that Mom would fall asleep drunk with a cigarette or Dad have a car accident driving home. No one ever talked about it, and these kids always thought it was their fault.
I know alcoholism wasn't even mentioned in my home until my dad died from it three years ago. And even then it was hard for me to talk about, until I heard other people's voices.
He was a really sort of Jekyll/Hyde personality. When he wasn't drinking he was charming and bright and insightful. And when he was drinking he was angry.
I believe my father's alcoholic. And I love him dearly and I can't get him sober. And he thinks he's just a boozer.
My childhood was normal to me. Craziness, violence, hitting, screaming, crying, staying up all night. All those things were just our normal life.
Confusion is why I couldn't figure things out. Why can't I figure out the confusion? So I was confused about the confusion.
I used to think that a bolt of lightning was going to come and crash down on me if I talked about it.
Once it was easy for people to see me on the outside and think that things were going OK. The last year things just went dramatically downhill.
I thought if I was a better kid that maybe he wouldn't drink.
Now I know, because I was one once, that there are some cynics out there. Someone recently wrote that it feels as if we're about to have support groups for third cousins of excessive sherry drinkers. How important is this?
Well, there are 28 million Americans who have at least one alcoholic parent. That's one out of eight. And most of the people that we're talking about have worked very hard at looking really good so no one knows there's a problem until their lives just fall apart and marriages break up or they're profoundly depressed and they don't know why.
We get a lot of mixed si.
The neighbor would see the man of the house drink beers quickly behind his garage when his daughter and son-in-law visited. This happened every few weeks and was the man's way of dealing with the stress of their visits. The passage discusses common ways people cope with stress, such as distraction, avoidance, isolation, or dissipating energy, but argues these don't resolve the underlying issues. It introduces the concept of "focusing" from Dr. Gendlin's research - accepting feelings instead of resisting stress, in order to remain conscious of problems and deal with them directly.
Are You Motivated by Power, Relationships, or Achievement?Employment Crossing
The document discusses three different personality types that may emerge when someone sits in the restored classic cars that the author has spent decades restoring: power-oriented, relationship-oriented, and achievement-oriented. It provides examples of how each type would react and what questions they would ask when viewing the cars, noting their different motivations - power, relationships, and achievement respectively. The author stresses the importance of understanding one's own personality type and being in a career that allows one to thrive using their natural motivations.
To succeed in the terms you have set for yourself, you need to look out for, and operate in, an environment that is strong and very demanding from you in terms of work.
In life and in career, most people seek to improve, get traction and stay in the game. No one wishes to slip and fall and yet all, at some point or another do.
Be Someone Who is Engaged with Work, Not Someone Who Avoids WorkEmployment Crossing
The document discusses several instances the author witnessed of people avoiding work or being disengaged from their jobs, including:
1) Two airline stewardesses who spent their time during the flight clipping coupons and complaining about their jobs instead of serving passengers.
2) An airline executive who was upset about being expected to work during a flight instead of sleeping.
3) Pilots who were more interested in surfing the internet than flying the plane.
4) An airport shuttle driver who was not actually picking passengers up from the airport on schedule.
The author concludes that being engaged with and finding meaning in one's work is important for career satisfaction and success.

Do not plunge into something as important as a new job before investing enough time in researching and learning more about the work required, the people you will work with, and the environment.
You need to decide for yourself which method works best for you. An alternate to this exists as well; you can choose to let things remain the way they are.
It is important for every individual to realize that nobody else is going to be as concerned for your career as you yourself. Because of this reason, it becomes much more important to protect your ability to earn your living.
Paying attention to details is one of the most important things for success. Successful people have an extraordinary ability to focus on even small details and are often obsessed with intricate knowledge about details. 2. I Grew Up With A Single Mother, On A Street Where All The Other Families Were Still Two-Parent Families Eventually, it became apparent that the other families in the neighborhood did not approve of my family.
3. One Day, I Was Out On The Front Lawn And The Neighbor’s Father Was Out Fixing A Flagpole. I overheard him saying in reference to me, “ The reason we are so happy and have such good kids is because we are moral. We do not believe in things like divorce. Our kids will always do better than that sort of kid and always be much happier because we set such a good example. As a 12 year old boy, doing voluntary yard work on my mother’s house, I took this very hard.
4. After My Mother’s Second Husband Died, We Moved To A White Collar Neighborhood An old sorority sister of my mother’s, Diane, lived a few houses down from us. Apparently Diane, in addition to the rest of the “picture perfect” families, felt uncomfortable having a single mother on the street.
5. Though My Mother Pretended That It Didn’t Upset Her, I Knew It Did My mother never had a ton of boyfriends. However, everyone in the neighborhood still seemed to think that she was a bad influence because she was a single mother.
6. I Was Invited To Dinner One Night By A Woman Down The Street I was around 12 years old, and my sister, who came along, was about 5. When I entered the house, she said that if I was going to have dinner at her house, that I needed to go home, shower, and change clothes first. This hurt my feelings, but I ended up running home and showering.
7. When We Sat Down To Dinner, It Got Even Worse “ If you do not wipe your mouth off when you get food on it we will never invite you over to eat again,” she said to me. I spent the rest of the night in silence and fear. I was never invited over again.
8. I Remember Her Son, Sometime Later, Saying Something To Me Like: “ My mom says not to talk to you because you are trash!” Later, her elder son , who was around my age, stole a skateboard off of my front yard and smashed it to pieces with a sledgehammer.
9. His Friends Later Confessed That The Son Had Actually Taken And Destroyed The Skateboard I called his parents and demanded that they pay me for what their son had done. It was an expensive skateboard. “ My son says he did not do it and, even though the other kids say he did, we believe our son. We are not going to pay for it.” However, even after several of his friends had told them that their son was responsible, he still denied it to them. They believed him, and told me they would not pay for any of it.
10. About A Year Later, The Daughter Of These People Became Pregnant In the conservative area we lived in, this was unspeakable. Furthermore, when the baby was born, it turned out to be black, although she and her boyfriend were both white.
11. This was the biggest scandal I had known growing up.
12. In Almost Every Case Where Someone Has Been Judgmental To Me, Their Own Identities Have Been Comprised In The Same Way The lesson that I take from this is that we must realize that any judgments we make, may come back on us one day. I have also realized that no person is perfect and we are all hypocritical sometimes.

14. Daisy Is Married To Tom, With Whom She Has One Child Despite the fact that they both commit adultery, they refuse to leave each other because they will not risk losing their lavish lifestyles.
15. In Order To Become Rich, Gatsby Engages In Bootlegging Even though he becomes very wealthy, and hosts very large and lavish parties, he does not make any true friends. Also, when Daisy finds out about how Gatsby made his money, she loses respect for him.

17. I Have Learned From My Experiences Growing Up In That Neighborhood The more we judge others for their circumstances, the more we are likely to suffer from those same circumstances.
