A soldier calls his parents from San Francisco to say he is coming home from Vietnam and wants to bring a friend who was injured, losing an arm and a leg. The parents are reluctant but agree. However, when the son says he wants his friend to live with them, the father refuses, thinking he would be a burden. After the son hangs up, he commits suicide. The parents later learn their son also only had one arm and one leg, realizing they turned away the one person their son loved due to his disabilities. The story promotes unconditional love and acceptance of those different from ourselves.
