The Cannes Film Festival was created in 1947 on the initiative of the French Minister of Education and Fine Arts to establish an international cultural event in France similar to the Venice Film Festival. [1] Over time, Cannes gained international reputation for the stars and increasing media coverage that attended. [2] It has become an important European film showcase, as well as determining a country's image of its cinema. [3] The Festival is organized into various competitive and non-competitive sections that recognize films through jury awards.
