Anton Jones films a video explaining his discovery of and stalking of the mysterious "Binary Man." He shares evidence and research on a website about the Binary Man. As Anton reads disturbing information that distorts on his screen, unexplained noises are heard. Technology in the room begins malfunctioning as Anton senses the Binary Man's approaching presence. A music box tune plays as Anton's flashlight dies, revealing the Binary Man standing before him through the camera before it cuts to black.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. “The Binary Tape” Script
Scene One
Following the glitch-style title sequence, the camera shot glitches into view and focuses on
the subject present in the frame.
The camera is jittering from time to time, simulating an amateur filming.
Anton: My name is Anton Jones, and this may or may not be the last time the world ever
sees my face.
A distant clanging sound is heard in the distance and Anton looks away from the camera,
noticeably more tense than before.
Anton: Right, I don’t have much time so I’ll get around to explaining things…
Anton sighs.
Anton: To whatever unfortunate soul that finds this tape: I hope that this doesn’t place you
on his trail… there’s no hope for me anymore… I’ve seen too much, I know too much… and
he’s onto me.
Anton looks around himself frantically, internally panicking with the terror visible in his
expression, and then returns to facing the camera.
Anton: I’ve gone too far to just lose all of this to death, which is why this footage exists.
Anyway, enough of this… time is of the essence!
The camera shot cuts off, and cuts back to a shaky reveal of the desk present in front of
Anton, complete with evidence and a switched-on computer.
Anton: All the info that I require to make things clear is right in front of me…
The camera catches glimpse of several mobile devices lying on the desk to Anton’s left.
Anton: Oh, don’t mind those, some of my students asked me to take a look at them,
something about “unusual behavior.”
The camera turns towards the computer screen, displaying a website full of text.
Anton: So, the thing that I have been stalking for the past few months is known as the
binary man, according to whatever Y.E.T.I. is… anyway this website is the most accurate
collection of data on him, or it, or whatever it is… I’m sidetracking again…
The camera pans around frantically as Anton looks around to check for unwanted company,
and then turns back to the monitor.
2. Anton: The one thing that bugs me about this documentation though is the evidence… or
more accurately the lack of it.
He clicks on the TOP PICTURE on the website, which then proceeds to display full-screen on
the monitor.
Anton: This is the clearest picture of the binary man that is in existence… but something
about it just doesn’t seemright… I mean look at the clarity of it, he isn’t even visible!
The camera glitches again.
Anton: Anyway, before anything goes wrong, I need to get this out to for the world to see…
Camera turns to a sketch of the binary man that is lying on the desk in front of Anton.
Anton: This is the binary man… or at least that’s how I remember him… now, whoever you
are, you must make sure that this image doesn’t get lost… it’s the world’s only hope of
putting an end to all of this…
The camera flickers lightly.
Anton: So yeah, I’ve seen the binary man and miraculously survived…
A metal clanging noise is heard in the distance.
Anton: Although, now that I think about it, the way things are looking for me right now, it
may not be long till you see him for yourself…
The camera flickers into black for a split-second.
Scene Two
The camera footage is now severely distorted and glitching continuously.
Anton: My camera’s just had a spasm… he mustn’t be far now… which means I just have less
and less time…
The camera is moving from one end of the room to another as Anton scans the room for any
sightings of his predator.
Anton: Right, so along with the supposed evidence, Y.E.T.I. seem to have also produced a
fact file on the binary man… let’s see…
Anton reads the information provided on the screen in front of him.
Anton: … oh… it’s not letting me scroll for some reason… let me try to refresh the page…
3. Anton refreshes the page, which becomes somewhat distorted.
Anton: What…?
He refreshes the page again, which becomes even more distorted.
Anton: What the…
He refreshes the page once again, this time the text distorts fully and he can no longer
decipher any of the text.
Anton: Oh no… oh… oh no…
Anton grows more and concerned as he spams the mouse on the refresh button THREE
TIMES, which does nothing.
Anton: Something is wrong…
The screen then distorts, and loud noises and inaudible scream-like sounds can be heard as if
inside the camera itself, as Anton panics.
Anton: (Barely Audible) What is this!?
The loud noises stop, and three lines of binary are visible on the screen for a second, which
then glitch into the words “I SEE YOU.” Anton gasps and the camera suddenly drops to the
desk.
Scene Three
The camera is now picked up again from the desk, with noticeably more shaky movements
as it looks behind Anton, over his RIGHT SHOULDER, and then back to the center of the desk.
Anton: He’s here… there’s no doubt about it now… and what’s worse – he knows I’m here…
A non-diegetic, digital screech-like sound is heard as Anton quickly turns the camera towards
the mobile devices that were lying on his desk, all of which now display the words “I SEE
YOU.”
The camera glitches frantically, again playing loud, non-diegetic sounds as the footage
becomes more and more distorted.
The screen cuts to black for 5 seconds, and the camera is once again picked up by Anton, this
time once again facing his face.
Anton: My camera just bailed on me… he’s getting closer… I can almost feel his presence…
4. The camera footage flickers lightly.
Anton: There it goes again… the technology around me is growing more and more
unstable… he’s definitely getting closer-
He is interrupted by a music-box type tune in the background, which paints a look of sheer
terror upon his face. He then turns the camera around very quickly, showing nothing but a
darkened room.
Anton: I don’t know where that’s coming from…
Anton’s breath grows heavy as the music seems to be getting more and more distorted. He
shines his flashlight, which at this point is also malfunctioning, slowly towards the door,
which is revealed to have been opened.
Anton stops breathing with shock, and his flashlight immediately turns off. He turns the
camera around the room frantically, with nothing but background lighting to keep the room
visible. The camera glitches again, and when it focuses back into view, the binary man is
seen standing right in front of Anton, completely still.
The video cuts to black.
