The Battle of Galicia took place in August-September 1914 along the border of Ukraine and Poland between Russian and Austro-Hungarian forces. It consisted of several smaller battles and resulted in a Russian victory, as they defeated the Austro-Hungarians and took control of Galicia and Polish territories. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, with Russia having 225,000 and Austria-Hungary 324,000. The Austrian-Hungarian loss weakened their alliance with Germany and prevented further German successes in East Prussia.
