Overview:
Over the course of the last few units, you have been working on crafting the argument
for your Argument Essay. You will now write an argument essay that answers one of
these questions.
The essay should answer ONE of these questions:
1. Should climate change be considered a real issue or a hoax?
2. Should the United States have universal health care?
3. Should employers have access to employee’s social media content?
Each of the above questions relate to one of the issues you have already written about
in the Unit 4 Assignment: Pro and Con of an Issue. Now, choose one side of the issue
to develop into an argument essay.
You should answer ONE of the above questions in a well-thought out and developed
argument essay with:
• A clear introduction that sets up the issue, explains your topics, and ends with your
thesis statement.
• Body paragraphs focusing on one topic in support of your argument in each paragraph.
o You need three reliable and academic sources for this assignment in support of
your argument. You should include evidence that is directly quoted, paraphrased,
or summarized to support each topic. The evidence should have appropriate in-
text citations.
o You will typically want to include one piece of evidence in the body of each
paragraph, as you did in the paragraph and pro/con assignment. You are not
required to include a source about the counterargument (other side of your
argument), but you may if you would like.

For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. This essay is the final stage of a research and writing process that incorporates your work on the
Annotated Bibliography and the Oral Presentation. You must use the same topic that you have chosen for
your annotated bibliography and presentation. You must discuss your topic and analyze your evidence in
this research paper – it should not just be a presentation of information that you have gathered from your
sources. You may choose one of the two following styles for your essay:
Style 1: Complexity Essay
The goal of a complexity essay is to explain what makes your chosen topic a complex one. Rather than
defending one particular side, you will aim to explain why the topic as a whole is a difficult one.
Typically, complexity essays will be a sophisticated and evidence-based response to the following
question: what makes [topic X] a complex one? For example: what makes the legalisation of marijuana a
complex topic?
You will develop a handful of arguments that support the overall idea of complexity for your topic. Each
individual argument will then be supported with evidence from the sources you have gathered.
For example: the legalisation of marijuana in Canada is a complex topic because of arguments A, B, C, D,
and E. These arguments are supported with evidence.
Style 2: Argumentative Essay
The goal of an argumentative essay is to explain why one particular position is better than another. Rather
than simply (1) comparing or contrasting or (2) listing information you have found, you must demonstrate
an awareness of the two or more perspectives on your chosen topic and support one perspective with
evidence. If you provide only points you agree with and support them with evidence, you are producing
an overwhelmingly biased essay. Therefore, you must also provide an argument or two that you disagree
with and use your evidence to refute that/those argument(s).
For example: the government of Canada should legalise marijuana because of arguments A, B, C, and D.
These arguments are supported with evidence. Argument E goes against my position, but I will refute it
with evidence I have gathered.

Synopsis of the Task.
As noted on the assignment sheet for Writing #3.0, your fourth project of the term is your
documented study: a paper that centers on a question worthy of academic research. This
particular paper will focus on analysis of a novel that you selected. The paper will be six to
eight pages (double spaced) long, not counting the abstract, annotated bibliography, (see
“Ancillaries” below) or your works cited page.
There is no one way you are required to analyze your novel, but the research paper must contain
some kind of analysis, and that analysis should be the focal point of paper. This analysis could
critical, evaluative, comparative, or some combination thereof. As long as it is analysis based on
evidence both from the text itself and outside academic sources, it will work for the paper. You
may wish to use one or more of the modes of literary criticism that we have discussed in class.
Keep in mind, plot synopsis may be part of the paper, but it can take up no more than a
paragraph in the paper if you use a dedicated plot synopsis section. Any paper that is mostly plot
synopsis, or simply a report of information gathered about the novel, can receive a grade no
higher than a 70.
Ancillaries.
Besides the text itself, you will create an annotated bibliography based on the tentative list
of works to be used you wrote for Writing 3.0, and you will also create an abstract, which
should be about one paragraph in length. The rough drafts of the annotated bibliography and
the abstract will be revised into a final draft for this paper. The annotated bibliography
and abstract are required parts of this assignment.
Other things will also be due along the way the rest of the semester: notes for me to check,
revisions, and an oral presentation of your final paper to the class. Each of these is part of the
entire assignment; without them, your final grade for Writing 4.0 will suffer.
Format.
The paper should be typed or word-processed, double spaced, and can include headings. For any
other questions about using tables or surveys, please consult the writing center, any of the MLA
help websites we have discussed, our textbooks, or myself. Page numbers are required for
this paper, and should be placed in the upper right hand corner of each page.
Documentation and Sources.
Once again, MLA will be the citation system that you use for this assignment. As far as numbers
of sources to consider for a paper of this length, 6-8 reputable, academic sources would be
appropriate. Direct use of Wikipedia as a source will not be permitted. Sites such as
About.com, Sparknotes, Shmoop, and other “homework/study” sites will not be permitted.
General dictionaries and encyclopedias will also not be permitted.

Task: The essay must be 2000 words (+/-10%) in length.
Cover page: The essay must include a cover page that contains your name, student number,
resident campus, assessment title, and lecturer.

Students ought to start the reflective essay in week 4 after the submission of their first
assignment. From week 4 to week 9 (a total of 6 weeks), students are expected to reflect on
the topics (week 1-week 9) this unit has covered and evaluate which concepts or theories
have inspired their thinking or influenced their decision making. This assignment still
requires an essay format with introduction section outlining the scope, purpose and
structure information. The body paragraphs need to contain at least six themes over the
course of six weeks, and each theme needs to contain a CONVINCING and PERSONAL
justification of why these concepts/theories are chosen and how the mentioned
concepts/theories have changed/might change the students’ thinking or the students’
decisions. For example, students could identify the concepts of “automatic versus critical
thinking” as a theme for one week’s reflection, and illustrate with personal examples how
having learned about the differences has enabled him/her to be more effective in making a
certain decision at work. Close to the end, the essay needs to reflect on self-knowledge and
highlight implications for future self-development.

For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. This essay is the final stage of a research and writing process that incorporates your work on the
Annotated Bibliography and the Oral Presentation. You must use the same topic that you have chosen for
your annotated bibliography and presentation. You must discuss your topic and analyze your evidence in
this research paper – it should not just be a presentation of information that you have gathered from your
sources. You may choose one of the two following styles for your essay:
Style 1: Complexity Essay
The goal of a complexity essay is to explain what makes your chosen topic a complex one. Rather than
defending one particular side, you will aim to explain why the topic as a whole is a difficult one.
Typically, complexity essays will be a sophisticated and evidence-based response to the following
question: what makes [topic X] a complex one? For example: what makes the legalisation of marijuana a
complex topic?
You will develop a handful of arguments that support the overall idea of complexity for your topic. Each
individual argument will then be supported with evidence from the sources you have gathered.
For example: the legalisation of marijuana in Canada is a complex topic because of arguments A, B, C, D,
and E. These arguments are supported with evidence.
Style 2: Argumentative Essay
The goal of an argumentative essay is to explain why one particular position is better than another. Rather
than simply (1) comparing or contrasting or (2) listing information you have found, you must demonstrate
an awareness of the two or more perspectives on your chosen topic and support one perspective with
evidence. If you provide only points you agree with and support them with evidence, you are producing
an overwhelmingly biased essay. Therefore, you must also provide an argument or two that you disagree
with and use your evidence to refute that/those argument(s).
For example: the government of Canada should legalise marijuana because of arguments A, B, C, and D.
These arguments are supported with evidence. Argument E goes against my position, but I will refute it

WRITING 4.0: Documented Inquiry Project: Novel Analysis

Synopsis of the Task.
As noted on the assignment sheet for Writing #3.0, your fourth project of the term is your
documented study: a paper that centers on a question worthy of academic research. This
particular paper will focus on analysis of a novel that you selected. The paper will be six to
eight pages (double spaced) long, not counting the abstract, annotated bibliography, (see
“Ancillaries” below) or your works cited page.
There is no one way you are required to analyze your novel, but the research paper must contain
some kind of analysis, and that analysis should be the focal point of paper. This analysis could
critical, evaluative, comparative, or some combination thereof. As long as it is analysis based on
evidence both from the text itself and outside academic sources, it will work for the paper. You
may wish to use one or more of the modes of literary criticism that we have discussed in class.
Keep in mind, plot synopsis may be part of the paper, but it can take up no more than a
paragraph in the paper if you use a dedicated plot synopsis section. Any paper that is mostly plot
synopsis, or simply a report of information gathered about the novel, can receive a grade no
higher than a 70.
Ancillaries.
Besides the text itself, you will create an annotated bibliography based on the tentative list
of works to be used you wrote for Writing 3.0, and you will also create an abstract, which
should be about one paragraph in length. The rough drafts of the annotated bibliography and
the abstract will be revised into a final draft for this paper. The annotated bibliography
and abstract are required parts of this assignment.
Other things will also be due along the way the rest of the semester: notes for me to check,
revisions, and an oral presentation of your final paper to the class. Each of these is part of the
entire assignment; without them, your final grade for Writing 4.0 will suffer.
Format.
The paper should be typed or word-processed, double spaced, and can include headings. For any
other questions about using tables or surveys, please consult the writing center, any of the MLA
help websites we have discussed, our textbooks, or myself. Page numbers are required for
this paper, and should be placed in the upper right hand corner of each page.
Documentation and Sources.
Once again, MLA will be the citation system that you use for this assignment. As far as numbers

In both poems there is a common element. And that is a wordplay to make nonsense poetry. The effect of this, is that we must think more in depth to figure out the real meaning behind the works of literature. In Jabberwocky, the writer begins by setting up the mood giving us the background of the events that are about to occur. The use of exclamation marks throughout the poem afterwards, are what in my opinion, give it the sound. For example, “O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” suggests sort of a proud/relived cry. Which is furthered backed up by the whimsical words that have a positive connation to them due to the slaying of the jabberwocky, who terrorized the people.
While in “A Nosty Fright” another poem with nonsense words or portmanteau the mood is sad, and it only becomes gloomier. Like Miss Brill, the poet describes things together, in the first stanza “roldengod and the soneyhuckle” and jumps to a lonely chipmunk, suggesting that it has lost its companion. There is hope for it when it meets the grasshopper. Ultimately, it comes to an end “Here we part,” said the hassgropper. “Pere we hart,” mipchunk, too”. All hope is lost for the chipmunk and is waiting for the winter to come. This symbolizes death because during the months of October, November, and December many mammals including the chipmunks hibernate and its almost like it wanted to go to sleep permanently remarking things like “Will it ever be morning, Nofember virst”.
Some say, that the chipmunk is a representation of the author and her sexuality. She like the chipmunk, was alone and the typhoon that was mentioned earlier, was her losing her mind. The words and the sounds they make, further makes this evident because it is gibberish written by someone who is broken.

In each of the three short stories, the female characters play a large role in the character development of the three male protagonists (Goodman, Aylmer, and Hooper). Throughout each story, the women leave a lasting impact on their significant other’s mentality of the world and perception of others. In “Young Goodman Brown”, Brown is faced with troubling sights that make him alter his point of view on his town and the townspeople. Brown was introduced to the true form of some nasty people, including his wife, Faith. When he returns home the next morning from a place of sinister evil, his encounter with Faith and his townspeople has made him a hardcore skeptic of anyone and everyone around him. Goodman Brown never trusted a soul after that night because he was forced to believe that evil resides in everyone. In “The Birthmark”, Aylmer goes insane trying to remove his wife, Georgiana’s, birthmark. Even after hearing how beautiful and well liked she is, Georgiana agrees to get her birthmark removed. Rather than seeing this as a perfect part of her, Aylmer sees the birthmark as a flaw that gives her an imperfect complexion. Later in the story, as the birthmark fades and she wakes up, she states that he should’ve admired what he had in the first place, then dies. This made Aylmer realize that he took time for granted, and now he lives a life without Georgiana due to his impatience with her already beautiful complexion. And finally, in “The Minister’s Black Veil”, Reverend Hooper consistently wears a black veil that covers the majority of his face. Several people were afraid and intimidated by it, except for his fiancée, Elizabeth. After further questioning, she begins to fear the veil due to what it symbolizes- the sin in all human beings. Hooper’s plea for Elizabeth to stay reveals the extent of which he is willing to sacrifice, and the decision for him to continue to wear the veil reveals great sorrow; “Do not leave me in this miserable obscurity forever!” (Hawthorne, 36). In each of the short stories, each female character, always a love interest, is first skeptical of the main character’s choice of actions, then later comply. In each short story, a life lesson is learned for each male character.

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
