13. Many steps go into drawing even simple characters.

14. Especially when starting from a blank page.

16. First, a loose gesture sketch

17. Then some actual body detailing (yes, it’s a chibi)

18. Followed by further detailing if necessary…

19. Now to start Inking the Outline

20. A thick silhouette helps!

21. This is what finished lineart looks like

22. Now For Coloring…

23. Set aside a layer for lineart (I color it a slightly lighter shade of gray to make it look softer)

24. Add in body colors on a layer underneath the lineart

25. I keep palettes for my characters so colors stay consistent Main Body Stripes Chest/Belly Flesh (ears) Flesh (nose) Eyes (Pupils, Base Color, Highlights) Hair

26. Then there’s shading (It’s red right now so I can see what I’m doing)

27. And more shading for depth (this layer’s done in blue )

28. Yes, it looks GARISH right now.

29. BUT!

30. It’s trivial to tweak the color and opacity of your layers. All that ugly shading looks just fine now.

31. There’s a few other things for polish, like coloring in the eyes and adding highlights to the hair.

32. But she’s finished at this point. It’s easy now to imagine what goes into a whole page.

33. There are more steps involved in a page.

34. Steps like Scripting the story

35. Steps like Adding Dialogue

36. Steps like Sound Effects

37. Steps like Font Selection

38. Steps like Pacing the Pages

39. These improve over time as well.

40. But their changes are less obvious than the art itself.

41. Good Storytelling is near-invisible to the reader. Flaws aren’t.

42. Mistakes are inevitable.

43. But you can learn from them.

44. Once you find a mistake, you can stop making it.

45. The more you find, the more you can stop making.
