Speaker: Cas Plattel Genre & level: Frontend, Backend, Medior Ever found cucumber tests requiring too much boilerplate and JUnit tests a bit too low level? Spock is a testing and specification framework for applications. It has an expressive syntax to write your tests in and can be used to unit test, integration test or even test your frontend using an additional layer called Geb. We’ve been using both JUnit for unit testing and Cucumber for component and integration testing but both didn’t really satisfy our wishes. Spock seems to be the positioning itself in the middle ground where we can both write simple unit tests and still describe high-level behavioral flows. This talk will elaborate on the Spock framework, some pro and cons. Spock is not a silver bullet but did turn out to help us due to, for instance, less false positive failing tests and a lot less boilerplate. The presentation will contain a short demo showing test runs.

In which we let consumers define contracts for our services so that we can confidently change our APIS when we want to, and if we introduce a breaking change we will know who is affected. This talk will focus on the practical implementation of contract testing. We will write some code examples in both Pact and Spring Cloud Contract so you can make an informed choice about which framework you want to use if you decide to implement contract testing.
I want to go fast! - Exposing performance bottlenecks
1. A webshop was experiencing slow product pages and loggers deadlocking. Observations found high response times and warnings about increased GC usage, memory, and thread counts.
2. An initial hypothesis was formed that new functionality going live, including for products, and Oracle patches caused the product catalog to respond slowly to calls, triggering a circuit breaker that returned nulls and caused logging failures.
3. Experiments found that Oracle queries had slowed down with an update, causing extra queries to execute on the same thread and slowing the system, triggering the circuit breaker, log failures, and locks. Wrapping up, the focus should be on structuring diagnosis, formulating hypotheses, and iterating experiments.

Currently, chatbots are stupid; they only get what you want when you ask them in the exact way the system understands. At bol.com, we are improving our chatbot using Machine Learning and AI. To give users better answers more quickly, in addition to analyzing sentences from users, we also use information about the current situation of a customer, such as information about recent orders, returned items and status of package transport. Using this context to predict what the customer wants leads not only to improvements in our chatbot, but can also be used to proactively give customers and customer service agents information they need.
We can make much better decisions by learning from our data instead of hardcoded rules, so we have lots of plans to be smarter in the future. Through machine learning, we give customers better service, detect and prevent problems in the shopping and ordering process, and help agents solve problems. It’s a win-win-win! This talk will inspire you to make the most of your own data and provide an approach for using that data to improve your services and decision-making.

Splitting FIT: what to do when your service is overweight - Bart Enkelaar
The document discusses splitting a monolithic service called FIT into multiple smaller services due to it becoming overweight. It describes how FIT handled forecasting and inventory management for multiple business domains. The diagnosis concluded FIT should be split based on code cohesion, business domains, stakeholders, and requirements. Currently, chatbots are stupid; they only get what you want when you ask them in the exact way the system understands. At bol.com, we are improving our chatbot using Machine Learning and AI. To give users better answers more quickly, in addition to analyzing sentences from users, we also use information about the current situation of a customer, such as information about recent orders, returned items and status of package transport. Using this context to predict what the customer wants leads not only to improvements in our chatbot, but can also be used to proactively give customers and customer service agents information they need.
We can make much better decisions by learning from our data instead of hardcoded rules, so we have lots of plans to be smarter in the future. Through machine learning, we give customers better service, detect and prevent problems in the shopping and ordering process, and help agents solve problems. It’s a win-win-win! This talk will inspire you to make the most of your own data and provide an approach for using that data to improve your services and decision-making.

While Elasticsearch can be an attractive solution for search/filtering/sorting needs, we found the maintenance costs outweighed the benefits. That’s why we opted for a Postgres solution. In this talk, I will outline our situation and business requirements, briefly explore our decision-making process and elaborate on how we determined a Postgres solution would adequately serve our needs without creating unnecessary costs.

Splitting FIT: what to do when your service is overweight - Bart Enkelaar
The document discusses splitting a monolithic service called FIT into multiple smaller services due to it becoming overweight. It describes how FIT handled forecasting and inventory management for multiple business domains. The diagnosis concluded FIT should be split based on code cohesion, business domains, stakeholders, and requirements. The original plan was to split forecasting and inventory management but the plan evolved over time as smaller steps were taken. Now several services have been split off while others like retailer stock are still being defined. Lessons learned include that working with many stakeholders indicates a split is needed, to have a vision and flexible plan, and that incremental changes are better than just moving code.
Reactive streams and why it matters - Andrei Krichevskiy
This document discusses how to handle situations where an upstream system produces data or requests faster than a downstream system can process them. It notes that this can lead to errors like HTTP 503 errors. It recommends using back-pressure techniques where the downstream system signals to the upstream one to slow production when it reaches capacity. It lists several frameworks like Akka Streams, Vert.x and RxJava that support implementing back-pressure.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
